Question:
Right. I would just like someone to help clear something up for me, as I get a bit blurry on this.
I have heard that when you give a command, you should get a response, otherwise, don't give the command...
Ok..
I have also heard that you shouldn't repeat commands.
If you are training a command, or reinforcing it, how can you a) be sure you will get a reponse... b) ...if they aren't listening and it is in there best interests, without repeating it??
Bodhi is 5 months. I think her training has gone well, and she listens MOST of the time. But there are the odd moments when I feel frustrated and like I have to repeat myself.
What are peoples thoughts??

I think I would like to try clicker training.
I understand how it works, and feel I could use this method, but have never done it before.
Are there any good, clear books on the subject? I hate books that have loads of useless waffle in them I want one that says in simplest term possible, bang, bang, bang!
I feel in myself I could do it, but better be safe than sorry, and make sure I am clear on it.
As for paw - I have no idea how Bodhi learnt this... She just did it! Not sure if OH had been teaching her, but highly, highly unlikely!!

The trainer inmy training class said dogs know how to do "paw" instinctively, its a way of getting your attention, pawing at you. I thought she was quite mean, she told us "paw" doesnt class as training, its just a cute thing dogs do.
I thought that was very mean, I count "paw" as one of the commands shadow knows.

i do to...its like holding your hand and to me shows that she understands my commands and understands that whe i say that word she should do this...china now does it before you even ask her to...she know she does that to get some food...i like to think she should earn her treats by sitting, lying down, speaking etc...

Pippin will give all four paws (not at the same time ) for drying after coming inside etc. His commands are - Number 1, number 2 and so on and he always lifts the correct paw Must find a way of stopping him from wagging his tail though, I get continually slapped across the face when doing nos 3 & 4
Edited to add - I do repeat commands if I have to, I know it's wrong but what else to do?

why is it wrong if it works?

My Toby knows the difference when I ask him for a "nice paw" (thats just a normal paw) and a "high five" (he does a little or sometimes big jump and hits his two front paws off your open hand)
