Question:
Hi all
A very long time ago I posted that Fern seemed to have a lopsided run, over the last few weeks it seemed to be getting worse so we took him to the vet today who noticed that his left side (legs) seem to be low.
Anyway the vet is hopeful that if we reduce his exercise down well lower than his daily average, and restrict him from playing fetch games and ball games until he is 18 months then he might grow out of it so to speak.
So Fern has been ordered to rest in the meantime, can you imagine trying to get a growing puppy to rest - here lies the challenge.
OH is very sad that he can no longer play fetch with Fern but understands that Fern's well being is more important than anything else.
Big hugs to our dog, he's such a sweety, the vet was really impressed with him and said that he was coming along really nicely

awwwww Maple, i'm glad the outcome looks good but I know what it's like cutting down a dogs exercise! My Charlie (springerXcollie) is like a livewire and he's always going like the clappers and ends up cutting his paws or hurting himself, so we have had to keep him in a few times, just recently he cut his paw really bad and had to stay restricted to the garden as it kept opening up if her ran too fast! By the end of the week he was climbing the walls!
Just try and keep his mind active best you can! lol! Heres to a speedy recovery for Fern xx
Answers:
Thanks Random, poor Charlie - he would hate to rest too
The vet isn't sure what the problem is but said that we will just have to wait until he comes of age for hip scoring which is a while a way.
So we are just hopeful that rest might just correct the problem, if not then we will deal with it when the time comes.

Not going to be easy keeping a youngster like Fern still MC, glad its nothing serious though....
Answers:
Hi MC oh that is a shame, I hope it is nothing more than a 'puppy thing'.
I would just mention it to the breeder...good breeders like to know about possible problems.
I think games like fetch although great fun can be quite a strain on growing joints if you think of running/sudden stop/quick turn.
You can compensate to some extent by going for gentle short walks on soft ground, then stopping where Fern can sit and watch the world go by,then he won't miss out on the vital socalising he would get when out on longer walks. You can also play games that are less demanding but still help to stop Fern getting bored..things like hiding small treats or toys in the house and letting Fern find them.
Answers:
Thanks Mini, yes that's exactly what we plan, we'll have to keep him on lead while he watches the world go by - at the moment he likes to chase anyone with a ball in the park, big park, if he spies a ball he'll chase it regardless of how far away
Poor little man, as the vet said, if he has a genetic disorder there's nothing we can do to prevent it from getting worse so we're taking the optimistic route that he is just having growing pains.

Poor Fern I dont envy you the task of keeping him calm but I know you can do it Lead walks can be really tiring so I noticed with my 2.

Poor ickle Fern
Could it be growing pains? Or what its called.. There was a programme here in Denmark about a danish GSD police dog called Qato.
He had growing pains, and was very badly affected...
Answers:
Poor little fella. I hope it's only a temporary problem. Fingers are crossed.

Awww poor Fern but the good news is the vet thinks it is something that will get better in time which is fab.
Hope he is soon running once again, big hugs to you - Oh and I know what you mean about keeping them quiet - it's a nightmare with Ozzy devil-dog here!!!
