Carnage! Destruciveness, stealing food. Could it be linked to phantom pregnancy?
Question:

Not quite but it got you here!

China finished her season at the end of november. We are due to get her spayed at the start of february.

We have had her for a previous season but were told to hold off the spay as she had a phontom pregnancy and to wait until this season...

But i think she is having another...

Her breasticles have swollen up and she is sleeping more (if we ever thought that was possible)
But last time she got moody and wasnt as cuddly but that was about it apart from eating for britain!!

However this time she is getting distructive. Several times we have come home to find
1) packet of oat so simple ripped open and half eaten,
2)1 tube of minstrels , shredded open xmas wrapping discarded! and completely eaten
3) bags pulled off counters in attempt at gettin to food
4) an attempt on a bag of rice - straight from shopping bag!
5)and i have just found a wollies bag containing cd shreded and the case slightly damaged

as for the minstrels and oatso simple these were only left with in reach as she never goes for food unless she is told she can and never has done before!

I dont know if this is the phantom pregnancy...i dont think it is SA as ordinarily she is perfectly fine its just been these past couple of weeks.

I feel terrible for telling her off as it may be her hormones and she looks SOOOOOOOO guilty when we find it.....

please help......

Answers:

If she is indeed having a phantom then she will naturally be seeking more food to feed developing pups. Keep all food items out of her reach. Do not give her extra at mealtimes. Cut down her protein intake.

There is no point in telling her off for unwanted behaviour after the event. She is unlikely to associate you being cross with her with something she did hours or even minutes ago. Reprimands are effective only when the culprit is caught in the act

she knows what she has done when we find it as when we find it she runs and looks so guilty with those eyes that say "i am soooooo sorry " so far we have only told her she is a bad girl and after a few minutes ignoring her we cuddle her....

the only thing is i dont understand why try and destroy inedible things like plastic bags?

Don't bitches normally rip stuff up when they are in whelp to make nests?

I thought I read that somewhere but could be wrong...

Answers:

Think she runs away because she knows you are going to be cross but I doubt she knows why. She will sense your mood and your expectation of problems even before you do, best to avoid the situation than her get used to you yelling at her every time you come home.

Answers:

she is fine until we walk into the room where she did it and then looks guilty as sin, we dont yell as she will only be scared of us....i just wanted to know if this was normal for phantom pregnancy behaviour?

Answers:

Difficult to say not knowing the bitch or exactly what she is doing, but if the behaviour is not normal I would think she is either in discomfort or is having a phantom. Why not take her to the vet they can give tablets to help dry the milk up if that is causing her distress, and put everything she is getting at out of the way, do not make too much fuss of her, do not increase her food, but do increase her exercise and training.

Dogs have no concept of right and wrong - they do not feel guilt. She is reacting only to your body language and/or tone of voice and the expectation of being reprimanded.

i know, but im too soft and fall for those big brown eyes she always looks guilty the little madam....

Thordell,

ther is no milk yet and she is fine the rest of the time, like her usual self...
