Question:
A friend told me that as Takara is getting bigger and can reach things off the worktops (including knives) it would be safer to crate her while we're out.
She's never been crated while we're out and is getting less destructive - she doesn't find papers to rip up anymore and generally sleeps or plays while we're out (or at least that's what she's doing when I look through the window on my way in).
Her crate really isn't big enough (I feel) to leave her there while we're out. She's normally on her own for a maximum of 4 hours, normally less but 4 hours just seems too long for a 6 month old puppy to be crated.
She's always crated at night but then she takes herself to bed at 10:30 on the dot...
Should I ignore her and do what I am doing? Do you think I should get some high playpen panels to put around the kitchen so she can't reach the table or worktops? It's just that we can't leave them there so they'd have to be put up and down each time so if it's not necessary I won't bother. She's not hurt herself with anything but I don't want to risk there being a first time for everything!

Simple answer- dont leave knifes on the work top when you go out!
Answers:
dont worry....leave her be....so long as thing like knives etc are awy from the edge then i wouldnt worry...
Dont fret yourself, and trust her, just make sure there arent things lying around, just think "why would she find a knife so interesting to begin with?"

Yeah i would agree, just make sure there's nothing left out when you're away! As she gets older she's probably less likely to destroy anthing anyway, like you say.

Hi Lottie
I dont own a crate.. Luna's now 2½ years old and still alive
No seriously... as said before.. Remove all the things you think can be a danger..
Luna is not a countersurfer, but I still dont have knifes, glasses or other breakable things in her reach...

Hi - it's just that we have a set of display knives at the very back of the worktops that's all! And she's managed to pull one to the edge (but not on top of herself) before (it was waiting to be washed!). Thankfully I was there though.
I have just been doing as you say, moving dangerous objects further away from the edges - well, anything actually.
Rob - you'd be surprised! She can reach things I just never believed she could! She jumps up, gets her paw on it and drags it back as she lands, then jumps again, paw on it, drags it back as she lands until she's got it lol
Thanks all - my friend actually leaves her beagle in his crate when she goes out (its because he broke his back and needed to be kept still but she still does it now) and I don't think I could! lol

just make sure EVERYTHING is way out of reach, as Takara gets older she will most likely be able to reach the very back of your kitchen work tops, ( i'm sure some where along the line dal's were cross bread with giraffe's )Pepper can reach right to the back of the work surface as a few stolen tea's have proven it's probably unlikely that knives etc will be too interesting to play with but it's better to be safe.
when we go out Pepper is fairly free in the house, and more trust worthy having access to dinningroom, lounge and one bedroom, we put pen panels against the settee to stop her going on it and has no access to the the kitchen as we found that she will usually just go straight upstairs and sleep on the bed,
chilli is in a 12 foot by 12 foot pen in the dinning room so she cannot get upto any danger, is it possible to confine Takara to one room and ensure that is secure when out?? rather than free reign untill she is more ''responsible'' ha ha.

Lottie If Takara has a walk, a play first and a biscuit before being left so that her mind and body have been exercised she should sleep until you return It can help to leave the radio on too
