Hi I have a 1 year old Mal,who chews everything in sight......,this morning it was the portable radiator wire which was luckily unplugged and boots....everything she see's she wants to chew or destroy

Anyone got any advice on what to do??




Hi Flow its early days yet at 12 months and things will get better

When does she chew? when left alone? It could be a follow on from teething or boredom..make sure your girl has a walk or a play before being left. Play games so she has mental stimulation, give her alterative things to chew like fish jerky or a kong and if things are really bad think about crate training for when she is alone..at least she will be safe from harm and cables

She sleeps in our bedroom cos she cant be trusted anywhere else in the house,she has her own bed in our bedroom.....just got her sleeping in it again but now she crawls on our bed in the middle of the night whilst we're sleeping.

She normally chews when we're sleeping,anything she can get her mouth round,socks,shoes,other items of clothing,teddies,blankets...allsorts of things.

Ive bought her countless toys etc,even gave her some of my old teddies to chew on...

I couldnt put her in a crate,I dont think it would be fair as I work all day...she lives out whilst Im at work.

We do play games with her,her fave is hide & seek,where my daughter hides from her,and she sniffs her out.....they love it lol.


Just wondering if there are any other Mal owners on here to get some advice from...

She is approaching the teenage months so you need to stop this now Hudson used to chew things and it took quite a while for us to find something that worked

We tried Bitter Apples which you can buy in a lot of petshops or, failing that, online. Hudson decided he liked it Eventually we found that he HATED the taste of my perfume .....so we sprayed the things he chewed with the perfume . Result! It took a while, we would spray the things he chewed only yo find that he chewed something not sprayed for a few days but after about 2 weeks he gave up chewing

You can also try confining her when she is on her own , using a crate or an outdoor run.

The idea of a kong is an excellent one, something to stimulate her mind when she is left. I tried a buster ball but Delta just shredded it : But the kong is very useful. Freeze the kong and it's contents to keep her going longer

Also, you say she chews shoes and socks etc ...well move them out of reach then Simple solution is often the best. I know of dogs that have died from swallowing socks so you need to move them ASAP

Also, you say you GIVE her old teddies to chew on and then say she chews teddies...I'm afraid SHE doesn't know the difference between an old teddy and a good one. If you don't want her to chew teddies, don;t let her have any

No I bought her when she was nine months old,so I dont know what she went through with the previous owner

I have Northern Inuits and have the same problem, I have ordered some crates and am planning on trying crate training as it is what a lot of people have suggested.

This way when you are not free to be with them such as at night time or when you have to pop out you can rest assured that he/she is not destroying the place.

I normally leave her out when I have to go out,but we have also had a problem with her howling and a complaint was received that if we didnt do anything about her noise that they would....I found this threatening,but I can't stop her from doing this....the only way is to keep her locked up in the kitchen which I also dont like doing cos she rips everything apart

My partner suggests I sell her cos he can't cope with her
