Should I let them? (swap bowls during feeds)
Question:

This is a bit of a continuation of the feeding separately thread.

Anyway Archie and Ziggy are conspiring to break the rues

This morning After much effort they both kept to their own breakfast bowls. Then just before they finished, each left a little bit of food and they swapped bowls and finished each other's off!

Should I let them do that? They both did it quite willingly like they wanted to share or something. I thought it was quite sweet

Answers:

hmm - not really sure of the correct answer, but personally I would have thought that correcting them would make them think it was something really bad and then they'd be more protective over food ?

That's just my opinion, I don't really know and have never really had any experience of it so couldn't tell.

If they're both doing it willingly there's no problem between them, it's just concerning as to whether they'll meet other dogs and think it's acceptable when the other dog doesnt...

Well in answer to that Archie has always been taught that he is not allowed to steal food or toys from other dogs in the park - and he's really good about it.

Ziggy also learned a lesson the other day in the park, when another dog was being given a treat and Ziggy stuck his nose in her face - she gave him a growl and he hasn't tried to nick anyone's treats except Archie's since that day

The weird thing is, Archie seems more than happy to share things. If you give Archie a toy the first thing he does is push it towards Ziggy to try and get him to play. Whereas Ziggy will run off with it and hide under my bed

Lennon and Roxy are fed at either end of the kitchen but then go and "check" out each other's dishes at the end. It's never caused a problem

Yes when we had 3 dogs - they all used to do this - Patch our rescue collie used to wait on tenterhooks hoping that Benji (our apricot toy poodle) would leave her some food - there was never any left in hers though - once round the bowl and it was gone

Wouldn't have thought it would cause a problem if they have both walked away from their bowls - think the problem arises when one dog is still eating and the other one hovers at the side of the bowl and the dog feels threatened

I feed mine in all 4 corners....no one would dare croos the line and go the others bowls......feeding is pretty good here with 4 am lucky.

I would not let them even take a little form the others bowl

Mine swap after they have finished I dont let them swap half way through as I like to know exactly how much they are eating. If Finn got his way he would eat Star's too

I'm exactly the same I like to monitor how much they are eating too so that if any problems do arise they can be picked up on sooner rather than later. If one of them has eaten all their's and the other has left some I will let the dog who has finished eat the other ones left overs if it wants too.

I don't have a problem monitoring mine anyway as Angel is a bit of a funny ******, he won't eat unless you stay with him whilst he does so.

My first 2 would always finish and then go and check out each other's bowls and lick round them, it's OK IMHO as long as they dont start doing it half way through feeding, as that could start to cause problems.

Mine are fed in a long line and about 18" apart, when the youngest, Varg, has finishes he backs away into the utility Room, his neighbour Solomon pushes past the other two and heads for the water bucket in the hall. Once Solli has left the other 3 change bowls and would continue doing musical bowls but I always pick them up as soon as empty, which they are before they move on anyway.

Solomon is the only one who would grumble and finds eating a bit traumatic, in fact, he finds life a bit traumatic and his answer to everything is grumble in the hope that what ever is worrying him wont happen, silly Solli.
