How much food?
Question:

I am confused about the amount of food that I should be feeding Jake.

I was given a bit of food by the pound until I got around to buying any. Went to the pet shop and they suggested feeding him Pro Plan complete puppy food.

I bought some but the measurements only go by the adult weight size. The problem is I don't know how big he is likely to get with not seeing the parents.

He is a lurcher so should I go by the German Shepherd measurements or the Rottweiler measurements.
The German Shepherd says 110-245g per day for 1.5 -3 months
The Rottweiler says 120 - 280g per day for 1.5 - 3 months.

I have given him 120g for his tea. He had a bit at breakfast and a bit at lunch (about 2 handfuls) and he has eaten it all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ambo can you give Jakes his age please, you take the dogs age to find the required number of meals, then divide the required daily intake of food between the number of meals.

there used to be a rule of thumb that said for puppies threequarters to one ounce of food per pound body weight per day, but that was when people fed natural food.

So...If Jake is still a puppy buy a good quality puppy food (if you are not feeding fresh), follow the manufacturers instructions for the daily required amount and divide it between the number of meals

Remember growing puppies need little and often ...I feed puppies this number of meals ..
Age 4-12weeks = 7am / noon / 5pm/ 10pm
Age 3-6 months = 7am/ noon / 5pm
Age 6-12months = 7am/5pm
1 year onwards = one meal and a 'snack'
You can of course alter the timing slightly to suit your particular circumstances.

Thanks Mini. He is 12 weeks old this weekend.

I have got pro plan complete puppy food. I was told that this was one of the best.

Today he has eaten two handfuls for breakfast, two handfuls for lunch (this was the food given to me in a carrier from the kennels) and 120g for tea. He has eaten all of this and is still looking around for more.

The instructions on the packet for a rottweiler puppy is 120g-280g a day for his age. I think he is probably going to be a bit taller than a rottie but not as stocky. Do you think that I am right going by this measurement?

Sorry for all the questions but its been a long time since I have been through the puppy stage. Our others are 7yr now and have one meal a day in the evenings.

Also, while we are on the subject of food, I would like to be able to give him a fuss and a treat if he does something good (he weed in the garden for the first time earlier ) . All the treats in the shops are for over 4 months old so don't want to give him them. Would chicken or turkey be okay as a little treat?

Hi Ambo Jake looks a big boy for 12weeks,I think he will make a big dog
I would be giving him three meals a day, I can't speak for pro plan or the quantities I have never used it I prefer to feed puppies on fresh food then I feed Burns complete.
I can only advise you follow the instructions on the packet about quantities and if in doubt contact the manufacturers, there will be an address on the packet .
I would also give Jake whole carrots to eat for his teeth. For treats yes of course chicken or any little pieces of meat or cheese....For training I simmer little slices of liver in water, then cut in small pieces and bake in the oven till firm . Good luck with him

Thanks again Mini. You are a great help. Yes, Jake is a very big boy for 12 weeks old. He loves sitting on my lap for cuddles at the moment so I don't think it will be long before I start to suffer with that

Would you say that Burns is the best complete puppy food? If so, I would be tempted to use that.

Even so, I will keep to the three meals a day (better for me as well). Maybe I will increase what I have given him today a little and see how we go.

I prefer Burns because it has not been tested on animals using unpleasant methods and it does not contain additives Their kelties treats and fishbites are really good too ..But you can't easily buy it and it may be a good idea to keep Jake on a food he is used to at least for the moment

Okay, thanks. Will keep him on this food for now. I know I can get this easily and I also have vouchers for £2.50 off a bag
