Question:
Yesterday evening we heard someone letting a few fireworks off and Benji was scared. He started whimpering and trying to get on my knee. Looks as if he is going to be scared of fireworks so has anybody got any advice or any way I can help him - not had a dog that was scared of fireworks for a long time - you could walk Sabre with them going off everywhere and he didn't even flinch
Answers:
My dogs are both scared of fireworks so I try to only take them in the daytime near bonfire night. In the house I just leave the radio on full blast all the time and then they can't hear the bangs.
It does get annoying sometimes trying to hear Eastenders over the sound of the radio, but it's worth it to keep the dogs calm!

mine are ok ....well one will bark I am away on bonfire night so OH will be dealing with the dogs i will be partying
Answers:
Keep him occupied, turn up the tele and put the radio on in the background. They're a nightmare though. Luckily Cassie isn't too bad with them

Jake doesn't seem too bothered, thank goodness. But then I should hope not, what use is a Lab that's scared of loud bangs! (Not that he will ever do a stroke of work...)
I'd say try to keep things as normal as poss, giving off vibes that fireworks are nothing to get excited about...

I was told you can buy this plug in type freshner for dogs that is for stress release from the vets. Its good for fireworks night and intrioducing new pets to your dog.
Answers:
The DAP defusser which you can get as a plug in or a spray is very soothing to most dogs. Also make sure your dog has a "safe" den to hide in this could be his crate covered over with blankets/towels etc. Turn the music/TV up, close all blinds and dont react to bangs yourself. Give your dog treats when he's relaxed and calm and ignore him if he's shaking/frightened.
I hate the thought that any idiot off the streets can walk into a shop and buy a mini explosive. I am all in favour of organised displays though

Im in the same boat as you Foxy-Vegas dont like loud bangs either.
A month or two back, nextdoor were having a party and popping balloons, which made Vegas run around in a blind panic.I got him in the house, shut the windows/doors,turned up the tv and ignored him when he started to shake.Dont know how he will react to genuine fireworks though because its like WW2 round here in November.
Abe didnt bat an eye lid with fireworks, until one year (daylight i might add)-some teenagers threw a firework near us while out on a walk and he ran home terrified.I admit to comming very close to battering the w*****s and instead threatened them.My vet recomended turning up tv,ignoring him when he started to panic and after a few years he again wouldnt react when fireworks were being set off so i'll be doing this with Vegas.

Hi Foxy, we're in the same boat with Tia. Pippin doesn't bother but poor Tia is absolutely terrified. I have to feed them at 4 - 5pm for the time this goes on (started this week - and so have the fireworks ) because Tia will not eat once she has heard a loud bang (she is the same when it thunders) and she can loose alot of weight during this time if I'm not careful!
I am hoping that Pip may have a calming influence with time, she sees that he is not bothered, maybe she will learn to relax a bit.
My mum used to have to drug Chien (golden retreiver) when I was young!!!

sadly megs so scared of fireworks the only thing we can do is take her the vet to get sedated
she runs around in a panic and gets sweaty. She gets very scared.
She scared of any really loud bang. One day my brother was walking her in the woods and nearby there was a show on (he didnt know), where they had guns and 'cannons' (fake ones going off for the show). she was off her lead at the time having a run but got scared when they started she ran blind all the way home and crossed 3 major busy roads. LUCKILY a nice lady stopped and rescued her from the road, she actually ended up outside our house. She would never run away any other time, just got a fright.
