Our cat was 11 when we got Harvey and as you can imagine she took an instant dislike to him and kept out of the way. Our cat has never been particularly territorial to the point when we had a cat flap other cats would come in and eat her food and she'd just sit there and watch. As Harvey is not allowed upstairs that is the cats domain. I do try and bring her down most days and to be honest Harvey just wants to be her friend but Shelley hides behind curtains etc and even though Harvey could easily go to her he's scared he'll get a swipe which has happened on many occasions. I think a lot depends on the cats personality. If Shelley was a bolder cat I think they would have got along fine.

i had 2 cats when i introduced floss, she had come from a homw with a cat so that helped sort of!in that home she was allowed to chase the cat but being a kitten they got on fine.so when floss came here she went straight up to binka the oldest and grumpy cat and got clawed for her trouble!that cured that!the other cat is ok if floss doesnt over step the mark so floss just avoids binka infact she is very wary of him, wont pass him to come to me or anything.then i got a kitten in december,Tia is toatally unafraid of floss and will if in the mood play with her but if not gives her a swipe!floss has decided she is fight marshall!!when tia jumps on 1 of the 2cats and there is a spitting contest floss rushes in there and stands between them lol not sure which 1 she is sticking up for though as it is always Tia who is the instigator

Just dont do what I did years ago. I had my dog Charlie at the time, I took home a cat that had been abandoned at the hospital I worked at...after some pressure from other employees (I think I was the only employee that didnt have a cat so they figured I 'needed' one), I was never a 'cat person', not that I don't like them, I do but I had never had cats before.
I made sure Charlie was confined and after a couple of days of seeing no attempt between the two to meet and feeling sorry for the cat as he had hidden in a cupboard for 2 days I thought I should hurry things up a little as I wanted to be sure that Charlie would not attack the cat while I was out (Mac). So I picked up Mac and walked towards Charlie and got majorly attacked by Mac, all teeth and claws, clothes were torn Talk about learning a very fast lesson!!
To make matters worse, things had calmed down and I was dishing out Macs food into his bowl which was on a placemat on the floor when I felt this very warm patch over my back, it seems Charlie was not too impressed that I was feeding Mac first and had lifted his leg and peed on me
They finally figured things out between themselves and would curl up together in the dogs bed to sleep.
