Worried about flatulence
Question:

I have very recently rescued a lovely Staff,But he has terrible wind i mean all the time.I know the breed can be more windy than others, but Ossie constantly emits this horrendous stench from his back end.I have kept him on the food that i was given when i got him,but i am now feeding him hopefully the right amount as he was very under weight when we picked him up.Do you think that its just his gut getting used to more food? or could there be an underlying medical problem that may cause him to do this so much? His stools are quite runny and have been all this last week.He is being fed on Bakers complete as this is what we were told he has been having.

Bakers complete isn't a very good food to feed a dog. Perhaps it might be worth getting him onto a good diet. I am sure Saz could advise you because she is expert with SBTs and has some really beautiful ones. Quite a few on here have them too so I am sure someone will be along soon to tell you what they feed theirs

My Bullmastiff used to have the most awful wind - but since we've found a food that suits her better, she hardly ever 'farts'.

Agree with Foxy, Bakers isn't one of the best foods around, doesn't it have colourings etc in it?
Also, it's obviously not agreeing with your dog, if he's 'windy'!

Hello,

Staffie's can have bad lol it is unbareable here with three of them Stinking in harmony. If it is quite bad I would suggest maybe having his Anal glands checked? We recently had ur Bitch Keisha's Anal Glands emptied because she was terrible!!! No amount of Oust could help. She still trumps away but not nearly as bad as what it was last week. Hope this helps

HI Stamford

I am also unlucky enough to have a staffie with a stinky back end. He too is a rescue and came to us that way !! LOL

However I have since switched him from complete dry mix to Naturediet/Burns mix - he also gets fed two small portions a day rather than in one go.

Bruno now only "pumps" when very excited or if he is overfed. The first thing I would do is change his food as like others I dont rate Bakers very highly. I find staffies seem to have quite delicate reactions to food - so anything with too much colours/preservatives seem to set them off.

Change his food - it probably wont happen overnight but in a few weeks you should see a difference in his stools and his smell !!!!

good luck

We feed our Adults WAG , its excellent for them and the price is good too. Beta puppy for the pups. We mix their buiscuts with Mince, Chicken, Liver, Sardines, Tuna and Scrambled egg on a daily basis. they have excellent shine to their coats and are active throught the day and sleep great at night. It took us a while to find what was right for them and us, got there in the end. Pasta is great too

I never knew Staffies were more prone to wind than other dogs!

Well, you learn something new every day!

Thanks for the advice folks,It seems a gradual change in diet is the answer.Bakers is only being given to him because its what he always had im told. Also thanks Saz will certainly consider getting his glands checked if no improvement is made with the new diet.

Hi Stamford how old is your dog and how many meals a day are you giving him?
Edited to Add..

Ok found it, 18 months old ..yes I would definitely change the food and feed two meals a day rather than one large one. Watch any treats you give too some are full of colouring and additives that upset some dogs tummies.

If you are not feeding fresh food I would go for Burns or Arden Grange ,both have web sites where you can obtain samples and can be purchased from small independent Pet Shops. If they don't stock them most will get them in for you from the wholesalers

Charcoal biscuits are also suposed to help...never tried them though!
