Worries about spaying (again)
Question:

Hi all, Lily is now 18 months old and I still haven't had her spayed.

I know of the health risks but I still can't get this out of my mind: 18 years ago, my then manager took her dog to be spayed and she never came round and, so, so sadly, died. This sticks in my mind. I didn't take my last dog, Rosa, to be spayed until she was 8. Basically, I had to as she had a hernia and the vets said they may as well spay her at the same time. Everything went very well.

I worry so much about this and, although my friends and family say 18 years ago is such a long time, times have changed, etc, etc, I worry so much about it and, again, keep putting it off. We don't have any intention of breeding Lily so that certainly is not the reason.

Please can anyone out there allay my fears and remind me that I MUST do this for the health of my beautiful little Lilybeaut.

Hi JackRussellsRule! Of course having a general anaesthetics carries a small risk to say otherwise would be wrong...I have never lost a dog with an anaesthetic, I have lost bitches with pyometra though and wished they had been spayed when they were young and fit .

Hi Julie, hope you are well. We, as a family, have always had bitches and they have always been speyed, can't really say any more than that. I would never have an entire bitch, just in case

...forgot to say you can ask your vet to do a pre op check/tests before surgery to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions that may interfere with the surgical procedure, this should help to put your mind at rest..

...and don't forget spaying is an operation vets carry out very frequently so they get lots of practice...

We arranged for Saffy to be spayed last april. Our vet gave us the option of pre anaesthetic tests to check for any possible problems.

We were a wee bit unsure whether to go for the tests or not. At the end we opted for just one, the Pre-Anaethetic Blood Testing: to prevent any complications with the anaesthetic. It just put our mind at rest.

Talk it over with your vet, they are normally really sympathetic.

Hope you and yours are ok. It's certainly not the same as last year for Waxwings is it Seen anything of interest lately?

Thanks for your advice, I just KNOW how daft I'm being but, knowing my situation, I'm sure you all agree.
