Question:
Daisy has had what I thought was a wart on her ear, now I am beginning to have my doubts. I was just giving her a brush and noticed this thing has got quite a bit bigger and is oblong shaped and I am pretty sure it isn`t a wart now but a tick. I have been trying to find my magnifying glass to get a closer look, but as usual when you want something you can never find it. Are ticks around this time of year.
Answers:

never had them but i do know loads of dogs recently that have .....don't just pull it out though Barney had them in the past and I used to spray a little flea spray on it and that used to do the trick, but dont have flea spray now, so I have put some frontline drops on him and hope that does the trick, its a horrible looking thing, I hate them.
Answers:
My dogs used to get ticks all the time as I walk them in Bradgate Park which has a resident Deer herd.
I've since found that Frontline is the best way to prevent them taking hold though....
You can buy tick removing tools now but I've never used one.....
As a child, my mum used to smear them with Margarine making sure there were no gaps between the skin and the tick. This effectively starves them of air. After about 10 mins they either drop off or you can tease them out carefully by hand.
It worked every time on our family beagle.
Toby has developed a wart on his shoulder which I have carefully studied for signs of it being a tick. It now has a hair growing out of it though, so I think it's just an old age thing......

It is possible to get them this time of year. I use a tick remover for mine, you can just use tweezers but you have to be careful not to squeeze the tick (otherwise it will empty its contents back into the dogs, with the possibility of causing Lymes Disease). When extracting the tick, make sure you don't just pull them out, you need to 'unscrew' them (for want of a better term) and you need to do it anticlockwise. You must ensure that you get the head out. As mentioned above, you can also apply flea repellent or vaseline to the tick. I hope you remove it - nasty little things!
Answers:
Yes it may be a tick, the head will be buried in the dog but you should be able to see the legs you can buy a tick remover from the vets, it should be removed as soon as possible taking care not to leave the head behind, if you do it may form an absess.
You need to remove the tick from as close to the skin as possible then apply antiseptic
I have applied a hot match to the end of the tick in the past or surgical spirit but that is not recommended these days
Answers:
or methelated spirit. also if you do take it out by hand or by tick remover do it quick in one hit cos as soon as you touch it it will bury further in. if it is quite small its easier by hand but if its big and squidgy then it will pop with pressure.
we had a bad case in the summer with 100 odd dogs getting them

Henry the Hoglet had a tick or two when he arrived If you get a little paintbrush (childrens type) and paint it all over and under as far as you can with olive oil, it will drop off
