Question:
:D I am soooooo happy that I wanted to share it with everyone. It is official. I will be living a dream I've had since I was a very little girl. I will be taking 1 month off from work and driving across country.
Thank you to Jody for planting the bug in my head to go ahead and visit San Francisco!
At first it was only going to be me and my son, but after I talked to my mom about it, she decided, [in about 5 minutes], that she wants to go too. That'll be great. My mom is my best friend and I'll have another adult in the car so I won't be so afraid. Unfortunately, she doesn't drive, but since we are taking a month we will be stopping a lot.
We will leave New Jersey on June 24th and head into Chicago...ARE YOU THERE BELLA???...Then up to Mt Rushmore, then to Denver, Salt Lake City and finally San Francisco, actually my aunt's house in Fremont but who ever heard of Fremont? Hopefully, with the help of Jody and others I can enjoy a West Coast get together. After about 5-7 days, we will take the coastal highway south to DisneyLand and then San Deigo. Then...we'll play it by ear. We would like to stop at Lake Havasue {sp} Las Vegas, Grand Canyon...hopefully meet up with Annie our new Arizona gal. And straight across Route 10 to Florida and up the eastern seaboard.
Wow, I cannot wait. We will be making other stops all over and hopefully get to stay for a day or two in many of them.
I would love to hear from anyone who has advice on places to see and stay. And I would very much love to get together with many of you. Let me know of any such get togethers in between June 24th and July 23rd and I will see if we can be there.
Come on summer, get here already!!!
HEIDIANN!

I am so proud of you...and that is just so great. I immediately thought "hmm i wonder if i could get a month off" ...that would be SO neat to do such a thing! You are welcome to come on down to South Carolina!!! Might be a little out of your way from your original plan tho.
Happy Trails!

That sounds awesome. I did it when I was a kid around the age of your son and I still have memories of that great adventure. Plan sounds wonderful. If your a member of AAA they will put together a trip tic which is the greatest way to plan your trip. They are full of wonderful idea and information.
Good luck with planning the trip.
Mitch
PS any room in the trunk for me?
Heidi,
It would perfect to swing back through Arizona. It's a gorgeous state and you can see the Grand Canyon and then head south towards me. And we will be all settled by then!!!!!! This is exciting!!! My mom would have loved to have done something like that. You are very lucky you have yours I said goodbye to mine a couple of days ago. I thought I saw a glimmer in her eye. Maybe it was just wishful thinking.
How old is your son? Mine might be out visiting sometime in June. The baby turns 21 on the 21st.
What a wonderful thing to be able to do.
XOOXOXOXO
Annie
Heidi,
That sounds like so much fun!! My husband and I did alittle something like that about 30 years ago when he was in the military. We left from Pennsyvaniia and traveled by car pulling a 17 foot travel trailer across the United States out to California and lived on base out there for a year and traveled back by car and trailer. It was great. Enjoy every minutes of it!!
Sandy
finally San Francisco, actually my aunt's house in Fremont but who ever heard of Fremont?
i've heard of FREMONT!!! Then again, i live 5 mins away! You're living a dream!! I've ben wanting to do that as well! Drive taking the northern trails from ca to ny then drive back using the southern trails! im so envious of you right now!! Take a million pics and dont forget to buy some silly road souviners along the way.
Have a wonderful trip Heidi Ann! I almost got to see California when I was 13, but we never went any further than the Grand Canyon! Have fun and be safe! :)
Neese - We will be driving through South Carolina on the way back home to New Jersey. I'm so far planning on following the coastline. Do you live anywhere near the ocean?
Mitch - I do have AAA and I'm planning on visiting there office close to my home about a week before the trip to get a planned route to take. My parents have done this twice before and they said to go to AAA only 1 week before so AAA can look up all known construction areas and plan around them. Do you or anyone else have a different view? Should I go sooner?
Annie - Sean will be 6 years old, probably not much fun for a legal 21 year old. But he's a ton of fun! However, we are planning on doing the Grand Canyon first then heading straight down to route 10. I will send you a pm with my cell number as we get closer to the trip. So, did you talk one of your sons into moving way over there or is it just a visit?
Yesterday I bought a huge map of the United States and hung it on my diningroom wall. We were planning different routes and states to visit all night! I really cannot wait!
Having lived in San Diego for 6 years, my recommendation is not to miss Balboa Park. Not just a park, there are several museums there, the Old Globe theatre, AMAZING scenery (inludying a lilypad pond) and it backs up to the San Diego Zoo. There is also an outdoor bowl(Starlight) where theatre is performed and all kinds of shopping, usually from skilled artisans. There are also some beautiful fountains and an organ pavillion which sometimes run frees shows. It is considered CA"s most beautiful park.
