Question:
Hello all
Today starts the pact that many countries will agree to minimize the polution created by factories and industries within next years.
United States is 25% responsible for poluting the air , still , did not sign the pact.
In fact, they don't admit that polution and destruction of ozone level will cause warming global . They say it's just a climate change .
I don't understand how come they support things like war and let this pass on . Aren't they supposed to be an example for enviromental things like that?
What do you think?
Thanks
Vinny
It's still really cold in Michigan, I don't think the global warming is overly significant at this point. If we could get the climate of Florida up here, we would be in a perfect condition. Our freshwater lakes all year round! Just beautiful.
Hey Vini, we are in an anti science decade here in the USA! Just pray and there will be no polution. The free market and prayers to Jesus will solve all our problems. lower taxes makes people better. I am praying that Chinese, South Korean and European scientists carry the ball while we stick our heads in the scientific sand here for a few years.
Hi Vinny,
When I lived in Europe years ago I saw the worst air polution I've ever seen before or since. They still used leaded gasoline years after the US stopped putting lead in gas. We had to have our catolitic converters removed from our cars before shipping them over there because leaded gas would have destroyed the converter. The pall of smog that sometimes hung over the French riviera was worse than LA.
I also saw raw stuff dumped on the earth and stuff that shouldn't have ebeen burned to destroy it burned right out in the open.
I do think the US has a lot of industry and I am concerned with global warming and polution in general. Mercury in fish and all the other poisons we are bombarded with. That additive in gas that seeps into everything. PCBs.
Not really sure I believe we're the worst culprits though. India creates terrible polution. My father in law used to visit there and he had some stories.
I think it's up to individuals as much as anything else. Our houses don't have to be kept like ice boxes in summer. And we can put a sweater on when we're chilly instead of turning the heat up higher in winter.
Good topic Vinny!
Awareness helps
Being in the business I'm in I've been around some nasty stuff. I often wonder about some of the "environmental factors" that may have had a hand in this condition.
I've done a lot of work in the darkroom prior to digital photography and that chemistry always worried me. Nothing like inhaling some fixer.
Well, I am on the fence here.
There is a lot, and I do mean A LOT of propaganda out there in regards to global warming, recycling, and just plain pollution.
I used to be a supporter of the global warming brigade, until I started taking classes on earth science. Wow, people have blown the facts out of proportion to support their causes.
Global warming isn't anything to be concerened about, in the long run. Frankly, we are just in a leeway between ice ages.
Most of the world's temps are taken in cities. Cities are now know to be "Urban heat areas". This means that with all the concrete, blacktop and man made heat absorbers, the temps in those given areas are higher than normal. But, it is not a true indicator of an actual heat rise.
Also, the so-called greenhouse effect is the biggest mis-nomer around. If you do the research, you will see what I mean.
Anyway, not trying to burst any bubbles, but educating ourselves is key to understanding what makes the world go round. And of course, we should recycle. I am not dumb.
Interestingly enough, I have learned some political trickery by way of my US History classes.
OMG! I am not a Bush supporter in any way shape or form. I think he sucks. But, I do know how he won the election. Trickery, the old-fashioned way.
There is a phrase from the 1800's "waving the bloody shirt" a reference to slavery days. This means, that during times of hardship, if the politician is being chastised about his views on one subject, he will turn the tables and say, Oh ya, well what about this problem? Back then, it was mistreatment of former slaves.
Example:Our election was turned around on us, and all of the sudden a big deal was made about gay marriage. Who cares?!? We were going to the polls to choose a leader, and suddenly morality was shoved down our throats.
So, in essence, Bush was playing our, Awww, shucks, you're right. I really don't want the gays married...who cares about the war and that you are a complete f*&$#$head.
Oh yeah, and he is a demigogue. (sp?)-This is a politician who, again when under pressure, turns a mountain out of a molehill, and then spins it to his advantage and champions it. Becomes a savior, if you will.
Example: He can't find Osama or his own a$$ with both hands, so he suddenly picks on Iraq, blows smoke up our butts with WMDs, and catches Saddam. What a hero.
Wow, I just got totaly off the subject. I am so sorry!
I am just beating the I hate Bush topic to death!

Ciao Maurizio!
Come stai? Mi piace molto Italia. Di dove sei? Milan? I used to live on Sardinia. Was there for four years.
Yes, polution is a world wide problem. It's up to each one of us to do what we can.
Reading what you wrote about the cars in your city reminded me of what it was like to drive there. Sometimes a lane goes in one direction, sometimes in the other direction, depending on the time of day. I could be driving down the busy street in Naples and all of a sudden cars would be coming at me head on. Yikes!!! You Italians are wild drivers!!!:)
Hi Sue
Yes is true italians are crazy drivers.
I don't want to offend people of Naples, but this City about the traffic is one of the worst....(the positive of this city is that his people is very Pleasant ..)
So if you survive to Naples traffic i'm sure you will survive everywere.
We are 40 km from Switzerland, and when Italians pass the border they become very polite drivers.
This because Swiss police punishment is severe compared to Italian one

Yes!! You guessed it! It was "La Madelena" Sardinia. It was so beautiful there. But my favorite city was and always will be Roma, of course, for all the many and obvious reason:)
Thank you. I used to speak Italian very well. But now I've forgotton most of it, and the ppl here in Arizona speak Spanish, so I'm trying to learn that and it's very confusing because the languages are so similar. Every now and then I'll have a dream of Italy and I'll speak fluent Italian in my dream and wake up surprised.
Yes, Switerland is very clean and orderly and polite. But I think I like the noisy, laughing Italians better!
Poor Scientific Review
Vol. 81, No. 6 (June 2000) of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society contains an extremely eye opening article on poorly conducted, peer reviewed science. According to the article, meteorology has been on a 20 year slide in scientific quality with more and more papers being met by fewer and fewer comments (a drop of more than 50% in commented papers in that period). The lack of comments seems to have had some serious effect as to scientific validity.
I have used the terms “sometimes,” “may,”
“some,” etc., in my comments here. If these vague
words referred to less than 20% of papers, perhaps that
would be acceptable. Some poor papers would get
through any review process. In research topics that I
read, however, 50% may be a closer estimate of misleading
or fundamentally wrong papers. Such a number
is not easy to evaluate. If it is this high, however,
we have a problem that should not be ignored.
I was led to this paper by a comment on a general item on the poor state of peer review, especially in climate science. Steve McIntyre undertook to verify a central study in the IPCC report, the MBH 98,99 "hockey stick" graph and uncovered enough error to pretty conclusively demonstrate that (irrespective of what theory is ultimately right or wrong) the entire world has embarked on a global warming crusade without checking for scientific validity.
Huge diplomatic rows between the US and so many countries in Europe may be based on bad science. Global growth may be cut needlessly and millions in the third world prolonged needlessly in their poverty in part due to papers that can't survive outsider fact checking. The two sides in that controversy have set up dueling blogs with the pro-warming side being answered by McIntyre's show your work site.

It's actually more like half of the papers are simply not sound or at least misleading which puts them in the "stopped clock" category, if they're right at all, it's a coincidence as either the data or the presentation will more reliably lead to error than truth. The question that really scares me is how many other fields are like that.

When I took Meteorology it was pointed out that in the mid-west if you predict “the same as yesterday” in every days prediction you will be right 70% of the time.
Look at the weather map to make a good guess on when the front is coming through and you can get a 10% or so improvement.

I would love to comment further, especially on the quality of not dumb peoples education - not enough time in the year nor do I have any to waste deprogramming those who choose to subscribe to "the Earth is flat" philosophies. I will allow myself this, the list and reasons for going to war was/were long and varied. Perusing that list and reasons, the one and only one that I needed to give war the nod - in a country the size of California, with a population just under 25 million, United Nations sanctions were killing upwards of 60K(and growing) children under the age of 5 every year for 12 years with no end in sight. No smoking black holes, no screaming jets, no thundering artillery, no chatter of small arms fire - JUST DEAD KIDS. At that rate, Iraqis as a people were soon to become extinct. Kick down the door and kill the bad guys, NOW!
25% of the worlds pollution(based on bad science). We also use almost 40% of the worlds energy. CREATING 60% OF THE WORLDS WEALTH! Get it?

Hello
About Pollution
i think the positive thing of Kyoto protocol is that it will force
countries to develop new technologies to reach the target.
Negative thing is that every country will own quote and can sell quotes to
other countries.
Example
Country A fight pollution and improve his rate
country B does nothing with pollution, and it buy quotes from country A.
So,some (few) countries will approach Kyoto in a serious way ,and some
(most) will approach kyoto only buying quotes and continue to pollute.
About catalytic you have reason ,here in italy were introduced later than in
the Usa.
About pollution fight some countries here in europe are very advanced.
(may be because in this country pollution was high or only because they feel
to improve the quality of their life)
These countries developped new technogies and they own patents.
I think that modern countries don't have to lose the technology train.
Italy is late respect to other country...
A Name ?
Germany is one of the most advanced country developping new technogies
against pollution.
Germany is currenlty developping many project ,from Eolic,to Solar Energy
(in Germany who produce own solar energy can sell it to electric
companies).Energy produced burning trash, reuse of heat produced by industry to warm houses.
Not only they reduce pollution but also save money !
Italy is only now introducing this improvments but only in some areas, but we
arrive late and have to buy technologies from the others
I think that this will cause only a bit improvement of the global
pollution, but it is the signal that something is moving toward the correct
direction. Here inbItaly only few areas introduce new technologies, some other areas do nothing..
Satellite photo of artic shows big problems. In the alps glacier are continuosly recessing I don't know if it was caused by a glacial remission era or by the pollution
But is sure that we have to do something to reduce pollution and global
warming, Here the 2003 was a disaster,it stop raining in december 2002,and
return raining in the september 2003.
we had hot air coming from africa for all the summer.
All europe had this hell in the 2003,not only Italy.
Old people here did not remember a such hot summer.
About pollution i think it will damage more people living in industrial
areas than the ones that luckily lives in rural areas
In my area the biggest problem are cars.....too much !!!
It may be very intersting for me to know the Usa experience.
please let me know how yours community approach the problem.
Ciao
Maurizio
Well, if we are not careful and put out ducks in order, North Korea will give us a good introduction to global warming. They say when one goes off it is like the sun is on the earth.
I think the earth has natural changes that occurr all the time. Is it a result of our actions, not necessarily. For instance the Tsunami recently and now the earth slides in Ca. This spring is just around the corner and we will have tornadoes and then the hurricane season again. It's just part of nature, a lot of it.
I'm not convinced that global warming is an issue. No problem with polution and alternative energy here, just not convinced that we are necessarily destorying the earth ourselves.
There is probably an asteroid out there within a thousand light years with our name on it that will solve all our problems.
Hello
about world warming i'm not a scientist but look what your NASA scientist thinks about the problem.
http://www.giss.nasa.gov/edu/gwdebate/
I think that NASA is serious.
About Kyoto here all people was indifferent until the 2003.
the summer of 2003 alarmed each of us..
i'm living in the northern Italy near alps.
ususally during the summer we have an average temperature of 27 - 31 Celsius degrees.
In the 2003 from june to the end of august temperatur was form 36 - 43 celsius degrees.
43 celsius degrees is an african temperature not an european one !
my experience is that if something in the life does not touch ourself, then we are indifferent to the problem . this is true for all the people.
My experience ?
the approach of other people to people with psor.
For me is a problem, the other people does not care a fig of p.
So about Kyoto each one of us does not know so much until the 2003.
Now we are sensible to this problem, because it touch our community.
Think what appened to agriculture after 10 month without rain.
Think what happened to old people after a summer so hot.
I wish nice days for all p. people.

In my opinion, right now, there is not a whole lot you can do about the "cure" at the present moment. Right now the opinion I'm getting from my derms is that you need to treat it and there currently is no cure." Deal with it, it's the way life is. Probably the same with the earth. I"m not so sure there is a "super cure or solution". Just have to go with the way things are at the present.
American's mentality right now is "Jesus will solve all our problems!"
Idiots.

I certainly could BUT as I try to live by the "show your bias, maintain your sense of humor and mind your manners" philosophical tact, such a response would be in direct violation of said such. More to the point, Eric would delete it. What we have here is an example of the failure of epistemological relativism.

Ciao

I wish nice days for all p. people.

I think the earth is having a flare, just a normal cycle. Just like psoriasis, ups and downs.
