Question:
we all live in different parts of the country/ world on here, and i often wonder what customs are the same and what customs here are different then other places. i havnt traveled that much so i dont know and i wonder .
my question is about dancing. here people all generations pretty much listen to the same kinda music to dance to, and jitterbug is still very popular from teens to the elderly. now the kids do listen to the modern things but when it comes to dancing they dance to the the same stuff as everyone else. i play music with a guy from detroit and he found that very cool that grandmaw is strutting on the dance floor with teenager . is that a local thing or is that the way it is everwhere is my question . its funny tho we can tell witch community a person is from by there dance steps here.lol
are there any dances or music that are localized to your area ?
Sha.....or Chere....I am older now and don't go dancing anymore but that was one of my favorite things to do EVER. Here in Ft. Worth we have lots of western places and line dancing. Everything goes here...I loved swing when I was young but DH never danced. Cramped my style too.
BUT, I want you to know whenever we traveled in Louisiana and went out to eat and the music started up I danced just like you do. Everybody does it, young and old. I loved it when my first two grandchildren at age 4 got on the floor and entertained everybody. Everybody needs to visit La. and join in!

They typically play polkas at the weddings and at the polish halls in Grand Rapids. If there are real polish there its common to see two girls dancing (polka) together. Never see 2 guys though, at least from my experience. You also will see the older people with the little ones and it is cute. Polka is fast and active.
Also, one Feb 5 I am taking my 4 yr old daughter to a father/daughter dance at a local church (valentines). All the dads and daughters dress up and it is a great time. Corsages the whole bit. They have prizes and candy, etc... for the girls and they take a photo if you want. It's sort of like a prom. All the girls from little to teen have a great great time. I'm not big into dancing, but if my daughter likes it I'm all for it. The only problem with it is that it makes me feel really old. Sometimes I wish I would have had my daughter in the young 20's instead of the young 30's.
In general, here in D/FW (but most especially in Ft. Worth) it's country/western. Billy Bob's lives!

i will dance and play music till i absolutly cant . i promised a dear friend on her death bed that i will play till its not possable and thats just what im gonna do. it keeps me young at heart . i have a friend in a wheel chair and you should see the gals he gets in in that wheel chair on the dance floor with him. lol
here we have a seniors evernings out in our clubs . the bands start 5 or 6 and end early they have a ball too.
In the movie Titanic, the band kept playing until the bitter end. They knew what was going to happen. Music and dancing is a stress relief. Not really sure how much dancing they were doing at the end of the Titanic, but I'm sure the music was helpful to keeping some calm.
thats the right attitude misalses. you got it . they grow up so fast dont miss anyting .my daughter was into sports and i hate sports but i never missed a practices are a game even trying to learn the rules to baseball . i begged her to let me teach her music but wouldnt have no part of it. and now she says i wished you would have made me and your teaching my kids.

i bought me a 10 key acordian but its hurts my pa to bad to learn i can only play for 10 minutes and im whining and you cant learn anything with out being able to put the time in. we play a style of music called zydaco here and it acordians are one of the main insruments.its a fun music too
oh yea seen the chicken dance once . i was playing a wedding in baton rouge and when we stopped to take a break they did that . lol

I love dancing. I haven't been in soooo long cause the only place that plays *my* music does it on Thursday nights, and alas I have work to think about.

swamp pop is just a name given here to the bands that cater to the local dance style. zydaco is a cross between cajun and blues its a real fun music cause its so rythmic and energitic.
music and dance is a big part of the culture here. either you cook or play music or both lol.

How I used to love dancing!!! I started at a dance studio :) when I was 4 years old and contuined to keep dancing till I was 18 and graduated from a school of dance, I took tap, ballet, toe, modern jazz, ballroom, baton, and acrobats. In my high school years I taught ballroom dancing and my senior year of dance I choreogaher my ballet dance recital to the song "Over the Rainbow"
When I was growing up the most popular dancing where we lived in the summer was square dancing. As I got married and we traveled to different states(husband in school and Navy) I used to meet my cousin and we did the German waltz and polka. My husband and I always walzed. My daughter and I took line dancing. Guess alot of different kinds of dancing are done around my area now. Sure brings back fond memories!!!

sandra thats awsome . i love to waltz too, my house was a strange one when i had a friend come over my sisters would atack them and make them waltz .but they didnt mind trust me . lol
i begged my mom when i was little to let me take ballet but the teach wouldnt teach boys anymore cause she said they got beat up all the time , my mom asured her that i wasnt the kid to take any crap but she still wouldnt let me go . thinking back i must have been a strange kid for a boy to want to take ballet and hated baseball . and no i was far from a sissy i just loved to dance even as a little boy.
i was playing music a while back in this club and one of my sisters shows up and she is out there flitting around on the dance floor by her self . and one of the band members says . hey look at that nut that must be joeys sister . ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh and the bass player busts out laughing and says
it issssssssssssssss . oh oh lol

I've been dancing since I was 5 and I love it, but right now I'm having a hard time finding an upper level ballet school that doesn't encourage anorexia.
Around here, we do line dancing, salsa, swing, the tango, and the stuff that looks like its straight out of a porn movie(some peeps call it dancing). Most of the people in my town are from the South (some cities have Little Italy, we have Little Kentucky) but we have a growing Hispanic population, and some old school people that still think swing is cool (like me).
