America...and the free market economy
Question:

(just a little note--- this is not meant to start up a debate or challenge n e ones views or anything!!)
Okay... so, in social class at school right now (yeh, i know... ur probably all thinking "why the heck is she talking bout school!?" and i agree with you!) ... we're learning about America... and currently talking about the typical "american dream" (please tell me that you know what im talking about...) , and for the past 3 days we've been talking about the free market economy...
Because i am in the "hands-on" class (we have a manipulative class (my class- we do things w/ our hands), a listening class, and a writing class... meant to fit peoples learning styles), we played Monopoly in order to better understand the free market economy. What we learned from it was that free market economy is where the buyers and the sellers make the decisions... with minimal (or no) government involvement.
Through playing monopoly we also discovered that the free market economy is based upon individualism... most people work for their own good... i mean-- think about monopoly... in the game-- how often do u hear someone go... "oh, i have lots of money and you dont have much... here- have some of mine!!!" ... or "oh, here-- take some of my property and gain money cuz of it!"... NO WAY!!! its based on individualism... doing what YOU need to do to get YOURself to the top!
Capitalism is a belief system based on making money/wealth for yourself... and capitalism is what runs the market economy... money is what makes people struggle their way to the top. And... in the free market economy, its basically based on making sure YOU get to where YOU wanna be... and if you see someone who didnt make it... you just kinda shrug it off and say "oh well, u didnt work hard enough... " or something like that...
Anyways... the point in me making this thread was that my teacher drew up a "spectrum of economies"... pointing out that while the United States was on the Free Market Economy side... Canada was a bit mixed, but leaning closer to the Communism side... so im just curious, do you guyz agree?! is what i described up there a fairly fair judgement of the united states?! im not trying to raise up controversy... im just curious about this point that my teacher made!!
Any input would be cool!

That would be my first question. Maybe you didn't, but someone else did? Maybee rolled the die twice to stay out of jail, or maybe sliipped some of the extra monopoly cash to someone else?

You know business is dog eat dog over here, prices are controlled somewhat by competition. You can do whatever you want to do....A BIG PLUS! You can also be rewarded for working harder in some markets. IE...the more you work the more you make.
The neat thing about is that a lot of businesses and people do work together and network their talents and services. I see it happen a lot. It's underground but the work gets done.

I think the rich people of every country are in control of the economy and we as middle class have little to do about it.

I agree Brad... this reminds me of how my boss (who is a small business owner, there are only about 4 other employees besides me) likes to screw us out of an entire quarter hour's worth of pay if we punch in a minute late. My boyfriend calls this making sure your employees get to work on time (I see the point here, but still), I call it simply CRAP. If I am 3+ minutes late, I can see where this is fair. But one minute isn't killing anyone and there isn't anything that I absolutely NEED to be doing at 8:00am. Most of the people I work with don't start actually doing anything until 9:00am anyway.. DOG EAT DOG. She's a penny-pincher alright! There's no better word for it than individualism.

Hey!!
Ladybloede.... my dads old boss did that too!!! Near the end of his time working there (it was a trucking company) the guy and my dad came up with the agreement that he would pay my dad $200 dollars for every trip that he ran to calgary... and... every paycheck my dad got... he only got $199.96... and yeh-- its only 4 cents-- but he was still technically stealing from my dad! And about checking in and checking out and extra hours and stuff... my dad got cheated out sooo bad over the years... the man he worked for is a theif.... and my dads going to court with him in January to get the money we deserve from it!
