I know that steel manufacturing is hard work, Rich! My Ex husbands Dad worked for Northwest Steel Rolling Mills for Forty Years! There is a big outlet warehouse here in the Seattle area for Bethlehem Steel as well.

and it wasnt the hard working steel workers fault it was good ol uncle sams
first the got the cloths manif. then it was the steel then it was the nitrogen ind. now there working on manufacturing that will soon be gone. and when everyone is doing the burger thing who is gonna by from WALMART then.
the company that owens them now is from the netherlands. i think. in 1901 bs made 1.4 million and 4,000 workers. they were the 2 biggest in the country. in 1995 they were sold for 1.5 billion. i think 1.4 m in 1901 must have been alot of money. history is neat. it right next to the banana factory in bethlehem. billy joey made a song about it. see i like near a big city just like new york city. yeah right. lol all hope you all like it

Hey Rich my grandfather ran with the big boys...... Chas. Schwab and Andrew Carnegie....in my grandfathers obituary it said the three of them were lifelong friends....my grandfather developed a pickling system way back then that is still used today...our whole family worked for the steel companies...including my husband and his family.....the only thing is ....Chas. and Andrew became millionaires.... :( and we didn't :D
Our family was from Ohio, W.V and PA...they moved to IN during depression when My dad was offered a big job with Inland Steel Co.
I read the whole article and learned a lot...thank you it was interesting.
My father's father was a Master Craftsman with Beth Steel in Baltimore and worked there until his younger brother was crushed by a slab of steel that fell. My granddad left but they told him he could come back anytime he wanted. This was way back in the 30's I think.
I grew up two blocks from a major Bethlehem ship repair facility. It was an amazing place. The ships that came into drydock, for repairs, towered over everything in the neighborhood. One of my uncles worked there. So did several neighbors and family friends. Today, it's the sight of luxury condos with million dollar views. (And, asking prices to match!) Here's a link: http://www.hoboken-real-estate.com/...403condohob.htm. That's progress, I suppose.

Hey saxmom......the same thing happened to my dad.....this pile of steel fell on him...my mother was called, and the alert was out assuming he was dead. they lifted the heavy pieces of steel off of him and there he was still alive...he wouldn't go to the hosp., they took him home and my mother fainted...she was told he was dead. I don't remember all this was too young but it was a retold story in our house....I guess it's true...when your time is up it's up!
thank you for the link mike. that is some thing how times change. it said that thomas edison was here to at bs. it's neat to see that some one famos was here. i love to try to learen things. i read in another paper how so many were killed working there.
