Question:
Wed. night in a nightclub in Columbus OH. Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott guitarist for Damageplan and former guitarist for heavy metal icon Pantera was shot at least 5 times in the head. The assailant, more than likely a fan of Pantera, killed 3 others. Apparently the fan was distraught over the highly influential band breakinbg up. Abbott's brother Vinnie Paul (drummer) was rushed offstage. The shooting comes on the 24th anniversary of the assasination of John Lennon.

The reverend he turned to me
Without a tear in his eyes
It's nothing new for him to see
I didn't ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had
Sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see
Now is your (face)
Well I guess
You took my youth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a
New-found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
All alone as the
Memories now unfold.
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetery Gates
Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last
Through all those
Complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn't care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should've cried and spared myself some pain...
Left me incomplete
All alone as the memories still remain
The way we were
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the Cemetery Gates
Pantera
RIP Dimebag you will be missed.
Peace
Shawn
Yes, I just heard of about that tonight on NPR while I was driving home from work.
What a stupid, pointless, senseless act of violence.
They were interviewing someone (I didn't catch the name) who was saying how unfortunate it was being that the band would, more than likely, get back together at some point anyway. The nutcase didn't wait long enough.
Knew you would post about this...
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...
That really upset me because, that is only 50 miles from me, and my youngest daughter has been to that club! Actually I heard it was a pretty nice place....The guy was a wacko!

preliminary reports suggest that responding police officer expired the suspect just prior to him possibly shooting a hostage that he was in close proximity too. There are far to many police officers having to kill people lately.
be cautious of your environment. persons that are influential are always at risk, also, where you hang out can also inflate the risk of trouble. I'm not saying that going to a club is bad, just that if this guy would have been at the symphony this probably wouldn't have happened.
life is full of risks, just be sure you've evaluated them all and determined the best environment for yourself.
Misales,
Thats kind of an asinine thing to say. You could be walking down the street and some nut job could shoot you too. Does that mean we shouldnt walk down the street? Ive been to a ton of shows in big clubs in small venues and I have never had any problem like this or even anyone threatening me. If you go through life worrying about "what might happen" you arent living your life to the fullest.
Peace
Shawn
Lowspark, it's actually pretty truthful. When I worked for Wyoming Police Department there was a club called "the bucking beaver" of all names. It was also called the Chez-AMI and it had a restaurant and bowling alley as well as a big dance bar with bands or dj's. In ten years, note that in Wyoming, MI (a suburb of Grand Rapids) 2 or 3 murders a year is par for the course, I investigated 3 murders at that club. I cannot tell you how many times our department had to respond to that club to break up fights....It was terrible. I can tell you that we still go to many of the remaining clubs for disturbance calls and fights.
You also mentioned the anniversary of John Lennons Death. It's unfortunate, but if you're famous in this country, you need security....which can certainly change "the environment".
I'm not saying don't go to clubs...I think I'm repeating myself here, just be aware of the environment you are in. I would say this is pretty prudent advise.
In addition, the guitarists nickname was "dimebag", this for me is a certain tipoff right away. It is well known in our industry that dimebag is a term used in the drug trade. The first problem with the drug trade is that it is illegal, not even the FDA will approve the drug marijuana. People in the drug trade have no remedy in our justice system since it is illegal to begin with, thus they develop their own. Now people don't like how the police operate sometimes, but try ripping someone off in a drug trade and see what happens. I see it far to much.
Just curious why you didn't mention the other 3 people killed by the gunman in your original post, I will do that here. One was a bodyguard, another a club employee, and another a fan. Their lives are just important as dimebags.
I read some of the articles about the incident as unfortunately the stigma of killing a person has been attached to the life of another one of our law enforcement officers.
Here is a quote from one of the articles.......
"Some of the 500 people packed into the club to see Abbott's new band initially thought that the gunman was an excited fan or that the shootings were part of the show.
"I figured it was another fan wanting to jump off the stage and crowd surf," said Brian Kozicki, the club's lighting designer. "I think he knew he wasn't going to get out and he was going to take down as many people as he could."
In brief, I'm not telling anyone not to walk down the street, just suggesting to be careful of what street you're walking on.
Just be aware of your surroundings. Of all things, when I told my partner at the PD that I was going to New York this weekend, he asked if I was going alone and to be careful. New York is big, just like a number of places....good places and bad places.....please avoid the bad places, just my opinon shawn.
You know, I tried to make a post about the five or is it six now that were gunned down Hunting on their own land in Wisconsin and it got deleted.
So in reality you are right....doesn't matter where you are you are always subject to peril.
Lets hope Dimebags life is more important than the lives of the deadly despicable hunters in Wisconsin.
Misales,
Wow thanks for clueing me in to what "dimebag" meant. I would have never guessed.
First off I never said Darrell's life was any more important than the other 3 people that were killed. NO ONES life is more important than the next. I simply didnt know their names so I didnt want to pretend like I did. It is a shame that anyone got killed that night. This thread I started was meant to be a tribute to a truly talented person that was taken from the world too soon. I was not trying to take away or belittle the others who were also gunned down.
Ya know dude im really not sure why you try and pick fights all the time. I try to remain peaceful with everyone as we are all in this together. Just because Darells passing did not affect you in any way doesnt mean it didnt affect others. Try to keep in mind others feelings when you are up on your soapbox ranting about the evils of the world and how you try and put and end to them.
By the way because Darrell's nickname was "dimebag" does that mean his life want valuable???
Peace
Shawn
You are right, No ones life is more important the the nexts guys. Yet you choose to single out Darrells. No one else did. While I agree with you somewhat about the condesending attitude and such, you responded very poorly. I know what dimebag means... but how bout you take the time to explain to me why he or others choose to call him that? And always beware... Before you wanna knock people off of a soap box.. Are you willing to take thier place?
Bruce.

Hey there Bruce Love the STP quote!
Again man the reason i did single out Darrell's is because he personally meant alot to myself and alot of other people. I was commenting on the tragedy. I did not know the other people but it is just as sad. No one should have died that night in all reality.
As for the nickname thing,I also no what it means but I have no idea why they called him that. Its a nickname thats it. I just personally appreciated what he did for the music world. He rocked!
Shawn
True enough. No one should have died. And I suppose you only singled him out because he was the only one you knew of. Much the same way that if a family member of mine died in a bus accident, I would mourn her... feel bad for the rest of the people on the bus but mourn her. I just figured that you seem like a reasonable man that speaks well (or types well) and responded badly. Indeed it is always a loss when anyone creative that can influence others is lost.
Bruce.

Shawn, do you really expect me to make "peace" as I quoted you as saying when you basically told me that my first opinon was asinine?
I'm not sure what in my original opinion was asinine, I thought it was prudent to discuss the officers situation considering I work in the field. You know shawn two people killed that night. The bad guy because he decided to and the cop because he was paid to and it was his job. Cops don't get off on killing people and that guy has to live with that auora the rest of his life. According to the reports, more would most likely have been killed had not the officer intervened.
As far as environment goes shawn, thats just an opinion I have being on the law enforcement side of the fence. It's not gonna stop people from going to clubs, it's just an observation that I've made over the years backed up by experience. It's not asinine Shawn, its flat out an opinion.
Misales
I apologize, what you said that was asinine was "if this guy would have been at the symphony it probably wouldnt have happened". Give me a break man, you are insinuating that people who go to symphonies are better than people that go to clubs or concerts.
Your opinion is your opinion its cool. Again I just dont understand your need to sit there and criticize other peoples choices. When you talk (type) you sound very "condesending" as bruce put it. I think if you phrased your words a bit differently we wouldnt have these confrontations.
Peace

OMG, will you guys chill? This person was killed and we all should have some respect for that...I personally care when anyone gets killed or dies! This is not something to argue over...

I understand that all you wanted to do was to memorialize "dimebag". And you probably thought, "Hey, I didn't ask for this disertation". I really don't think Brad was jumping in to criticize the club, the crowd or the caliper of people. I think he just read the post and thought (with his law enforcing instinct), "Gee, I feel obligated to warn my friends here, through my own experience, of what often happens at some of these types of concerts".
