I'll try to help, but I'm not sure if you're referring to the ones at the top (like my butterfly), or as part of your signature (my name and the fairy). For the top, it's called an avatar. Here is a description of how to do it that might help:
Go to 'user cp'
Click on 'edit avatar'
Check the box for 'use custom avatar'
You can either use one on the internet, or upload one from your computer
There is a size limit of 50 x 50 or 100 x 100 pixels (I think 50 x 50 is the standard)
The instructions may be slightly different if you are just setting one up, but they should be similar.
