Question:
I write this for Mitch and everyone because I am honest. I have to say that this year I used the FMLA for the first time to help my legless elderly diabetic 86 year old dad. No lie, he has a problem with his last remaining leg this spring and they start whitiling on his big toe. Finally we send him in and the docs want his last leg. We get him in on Friday, the take his leg just below the knee and they're releasing him on Monday, just three days and they want him out, no rehab...nothing. I immediately took two weeks off to "get him back on his feet" don't worry he's a funny guy and we do leg jokes all the time. Called work, note from doc, and whalla...excused from work with no repercussions. Sisters took about 8 more weeks combined to keep him at home. Now he has his new pegleg and is happy at home.
In addition, if my memory is correct, my wife used FMLA about 5 years ago for her dad who was dying and died of colon cancer, she used at least 2 months worth. She also used it for the birth of our daughter.
FMLA is a great thing and we can also use if for our psoriasis if necessary. I actually asked my old derm "the one i didn't like" to give me 6 weeks for the dead sea. He told me it wasn't fair for my employer.....that guy sucked and thats why he's my old derm. In any case, got my relief locally so it all worked out in the end.
So the moral to the story is that there is more to life than work and money..you can't always avoid them but FMLA is there when you need it most, care of a loved one, a child, or yourself.
Although I'm not very fond of Clinton's antics, the FMLA was the greatest thing he ever came up with.
If you need it...............USE IT.
I agree about FMLA. Two years ago I was due to return to work after my two week Vacation, and was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. I Notified my work and they filled out the FMLA paperwork. That allowed me to keep my full coverage medical insurance for twelve weeks. My first month in the hospital totaled over one hundred thousand dollars. Without that insurance remaining available my illness would have been financialy devistating for us. Although I have not returned to work, my job position remained available for a year, because of the Family Medical Leave Act.

My son used it when his little daughter(4 pounds)was born early by an emergency C-section to save the mother. With her family, and my son and his family, we took good care of them. Someone was at the hospital almost all the time cuddling that little baby. Today she is a feisty 5 year old. And mother did good.
Brad, I'm glad your Dad has a sense of humor. I know a young man-37- that lost his legs as a teen. That is why I try not to complain with my feet.
Granny

This is that little baby at 6 months old.
I used FMLA twice for the adoption from China and Korea of my two children. Let's hope the "compassionate" succeding administrations stay committed to this worthy productive law.
My wife is already looking in the MFLA to get us some relief to help with her borther. This once the only great thing accomplished by the Clinton admistration but I am not going to get into that arguement right now. But William Jefferson Clintion one of the greatest presdidents of the 20 century.
Thanks Brad, for posting and President Clinton for be the great president you were.
Mitch
Well, good old George screwed the working man outta overtime pay....It does not concern us beacuse DH has a union contract...Of course the AFL-CIO did not back DUBYA ...I know off topic , but I had to throw it in.....
You know what Mitch, I was there the first 1000 miles with Clinton, I am not afraid to admit it....I feel he was a good president even tho he made a terrible mistake, and lied about it...But I bet you a lot of our presidents have done the same thing , and just not got caught at it!
The Bush Administration is pursuing compensation time instead of overtime, this would be a good option for a lot of us that work to much.
This really doesn't affect me much since I already have it in my contract. In fact, I pretty much got screwed out of my thanksgiving weekend due to my job this year. However, I received enough comp time (or earned time off at holiday and overtime rate) to take the week between christmas and new years off without using any of my vacation time.
My prior job, at the city of wyoming police, did not offer me that option and they worked me to death. i got paid for it but money is not the key to life. if you work so much that you let time pass you by, the next thing you know you will have a lot of money and be dead unable to spend it.
Brad do you realize how many people work at crappy jobs, and depend on overtime pay? Like freaking Walmart and places like that....Of course it does not hurt you or my DH, you guys have good jobs you are the lucky ones.....Those are the people it hurts badly...I got married young, and did not go to college, and I have worked at low paying jobs...So I know how those kinda employers screw people...You and my hub are lucky you have such good jobs....Been there, done that, did NOT like it...
BTW, I go to Walmart, cause I just about have to but I hear horror stories of how bady the employees are treated! I have no dout about it...

Deb, I think that screw job by the government (or by bush as you describe it) did not refer to taking away overtime pay for those with lower paying jobs. Maybe I'm wrong, but the cutoff was like in the 100's or something. If you're making 100K at your job I'm sure you can survive minus a little overtime. Especially considering that overtime is on a 40hr work week standard.
If I'm wrong, correct me, but I think if you work over 40hrs at walmart in the state of michigan during one week you are still entitled to 1.5X your wage for those hours worked over 40.
But William Jefferson Clintion one of the greatest presdidents of the 20 century.
Sometimes a smilie captures the true wording....-lol- (Just kidding, Mitch..you know how much I like ya!)
:D :D
BTW, Deb your quote, bashing Mr. Bush couldn't be further from the truth, the new "laws" simply cleaned up the existing laws on the books making it easier for both employees and employers to understand.
Although this clarification of the laws did allow about 500 thousand white collar workers to be reclassified and exempted from overtime pay, 100's of thousand of workers making less then $24,000 a year were able to pick up overtime because of their reclassifications, no one else was impacted.
Also, after doing an internet search (something I pride myself as being good at) I was unable to find news or anything about a single law suit to be filed as a result of someone not getting their overtime, and trust me if anyone could they would.
Once again, this was nothing more then a typical scare tactic of the political left, so often used when they don't have a viable argument.
Sad, but soooo fun to watch...lol.
Well thank you Hazy, for straightening me out....I will pass that info right along!
Just, GIT ER DONE Hazy!
:D No problem, Deb, it's all about helping each other. :D
