Basically, the origin of the "tin-foil hat" phrase comes from paranoid schizophrenics..seriously mentall ill people...who would actually fashion hats out of tin-foil to protect their brain from the government death rays or mind-reading satellites that they imagine. It's now come to refer to especially loony or fringe conspiracy-theorist types, some of whom unfortunately populate the edges of the conservative movement and also freerepublic.. These are the people in the "Keepers of Odd Knowledge" (Get the acronym?) that Rush Limbaugh refers to.
