Question:
HOW OLD IS GRANDMA
Long but interesting Here is something to think about. How time has changed.....
How old is Grandma?
Stay with this -- the answer is at the end - it may surprise you
One evening, a grandaughter was talking to her grandmother about current events.
The grandaughter asked her grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.
The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill..
There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man had yet to walk on the moon.
Your Grandfather and I got married first and then lived together.
Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, "Sir"- - and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir".
We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, day-care centers, and group therapy.
Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.
We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.
Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.
We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.
Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.
Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.
Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends - not purchasing condominiums.
We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.
We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.
If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk.
The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.
Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.
We had 5&10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.
Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.
And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards.
You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one?
Too bad because, gas was 11 cents a gallon.
In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in, and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
"Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware store and "software" wasn't even a word.
And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.
And how old do you think grandma is???
go to the bottom
Grandma is 58
How could so much go wrong in such a short time?
This Granny is 65 and I remember those days!!!!! They were good.
Granny
I liked that Granny....Things have changed a lot in such a short period of time!
That was great Granny!
When my two kids were little they found the box with their father's and my record collection, Lead Zep, Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, and the like, up in the attic.
They wanted to know if they were big CD's. And if they were, how did we manage to carry them around :)
Sue
hello all

richard
I still love those groups Sue! As far as I am concerned classic rock will never go out of style!
Granny,,,,I applaud you!!!!!!!!!!!! You said it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what went wrong,,,well,,,,,,the day they let kids divorce their parents, The day when parents said the kids need to find themselves!!!!!!!!! The day when parents allowed the kids to do their hair,,,green,,,purple,,, The day when parents let their kids,,,wear pants hanging off their butts,,,,The day when parents let the kids,,,pierce their ,,,nose, tongue, eye brow,,,and whatever else,,,, and I could go on and on....... Than you hear parents say,,,well it's a new generation,,,,,puhleeze!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why did we not do these things,,,because we new our father or mother would have beat the chit out of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will say there are still some young parents that are living by the old fashion way of raising kids,,,
My fathers last words to me sitting at my table were,,,, Ar,,,let's talk a little,,,sometimes I think I was to strict,,,,,,I feel bad,,,,I feel bad cause I wish I could have given you all money to make life easier...............( I'm crying as I write this) and I went over to him,,,put my arms around him,,,kissed him,,,and said,,, DAD,,,, THE WAY YOU WERE IS WHAT YOU MADE ME,,,AND I'M PROUD OF HOW I TURNED OUT AND THE REST OF US,,,I CRYED CAUSE HE GOT TEARS IN HIS EYES,,,,AND BY US NOT HAVING EVERYTHING IN LIFE,WHEN WE WERE YOUNG ,MAKES ME APPRECIATE HAVING WHAT I HAVE NOW...........AND I DID GET TO TELL HIM HE WAS THE BEST FATHER A KID COULD HAVE,,,AND I'LL ALWAYS RESPECT YOU. 2 WEEKS LATER,,,HE DIED. I THANKED GOD FOR GIVING ME THAT CHANCE TO TELL MY DAD THAT.... I'm 57,, and will always believe the old way is the best way!!!!!!!!!!!!
Granny do you remember when we put colored celefane paper on the tv to make it color!!!!!!!!! lol,,,,, waking up Xmas and opening 1 or 2 toys and that was the best,,,, the hunting sock was hanging with nuts,,,a fruit,,,hard candy, in it,,and we each had our own sock,,,because my father had all his hunting socks,,,lol,,, like my moms favorite words were ,,,Ar,,,you'll see when you have kids,,,,you'll know why,,we did the things the way we did,,,,only as a mother you will understand,,,,, Those words are instilled in my head,,forever!!! And I wouldn't change one thing.
ok,,,i'm done,,,now tell me what you remember!!!!!!! thank you for this thread.
Arl,,,,YOU HAD TV???? We sat around the radio like the Waltons.
I agree with all you said but will add a few of my own observations,,,,,
They took prayer out of school, if they have prayer on the Senate floor, why not something in school-for all faiths.
Instead of prayer, they put in sex and do your own thing.
They are trying to take Christianity out of everything, but let others have whatever religion they want. And it is "in our face".
People that come to this country try to change things to suit their way of life instead of adapting to ours. If they come here, they should learn the language.
They try to punish parents and teachers for punishing kids.
They let too many criminals out of jail. They usually do it again.
I could go on but I think some people will get mad at me.
Granny
Granny,,,you took the words right out of my mouth!!!!! And who cares if who gets mad ,,,I don't care anymore,,,,they want to start threads and than get offended by it,,,,if you can't take the heat,,than don't ask for opinions!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes the very most important thing is about taking prayer out,,,when we were in school we said a prayer and The Pledge Of Allegiance,,,,who was of whatever faith or belief,,,sat there and that was that.....
And what about the way they sing the National Anthem!!!!!!!!!! Dam it sing it the way you were taught to sing in school....
Let them all go back to their countries and believe in what they want,,don't come here and change our way,,,,take Gods name out of everything,,,,well we'll see if they get their way!!!!!!that should be our decision,,,we should be able to vote on that,,,if our Senate is going to let other countries rule them!!!!!!!!! Forget about it!!!!!!!!!!!
Granny,,,we are in rear form today ,,,,huh!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO
Granny and Arlie, I am with you 100%...Everything you both have said is my opinion too...
Arlie, that was such a moving story about your Dad...You are lucky to have such good memories, even though they make you weep sometimes...
xoxoxo
Molly
Thank you, Molly,,,,many many good ones,,,,thank God for memories...And my mother just the same,,,she was just like me,,,a joker everywhere she went,,,and her and I together,,,omg,,,I lost her to cancer,,,she was 56..And I owe them everything for the strict ways of raising kids,,,,did us the world of good... And in return,,,they were always RESPECTED!!!! I ALWAYS WAS TAUGHT TO RESPECT YOUR ELDERS AND IF WE DARED NOT TO ,,,WOW....Alot of kids today have no respect,,,for others or themselves,,,it's pitiful!!!!
Molly thanks, its good to hear that.
My Mom and Dad were like Arl's. One difference was my Granny lived with us. That was like having two Mamas. If one didn't catch you, the other did. I am in the middle of ten kids, so the older ones were bossy and the younger ones were tattletales!!! Heck, we couldn't get away with any thing.
Arlie, my mom also died of cancer in 1980. She was 69. My dad died at 89 in 1997. Two of my brothers have died. I have 5 sisters and you would fit right in. We are going to give the youngest sister and her husband a birthday party on the 21st. He will be 50 and she will be 50 in Dec. She is the youngest in the family also.
Family values RULES!!!!!!

Arl,
My Grandma was a real strict lady. She had to be cause Grandpa died and left her with 6 children under 12 years old. He died in 1914. Times were hard then, but she did it. We knew we had to obey her or Daddy got involved!!!!!
Granny
Granny,,,,we were so afraid to get a bad mark on out report cards!!!!! lol,,,and you only stayed home if the Dr. came to the house,,,so we never said we were sick,,,,we were chit scared of the Dr. with that black bag,,,I fell from a tree,,,I was oh,,about 10,,cut my knee open,,was so afraid of the Dr.,,,I kept cleaning it myself,,,cause I knew it needed stitches,,,well no way was I getting those,,,my mother finally saw it,,,oh she felt so bad,,,but than yelled and said don't you ever hide anything like that again....lol
Hello,
I have been reading all these threads about moral values, family values, christian values, and the like. Well not to start an argument here but who appointed you all the moral saviours of everyone on these boards? If im not mistaken this great country was founded by people who wanted to escape persecution. Freedom is the key word here. I am hearing all this talk about moral this and family values that. Who says that your way or your religion is best? I myself am not a religious man, I am married with 2 beautiful daughters. I amraising them to think for themselves and not to let other people control or persecute them for their beliefs. I think i am doing a good job. They are great kids. Polite well mannered, they know right from wrong. If you all want to believe this stuff great! That is your right, but dont act like anyone who doesnt act or believe the way you think they should is wrong or a bad person. Judge not lest the be judged.
Peace
Shawn
Excuse me, Shawn
We never said that we are the moral saviours of the world. We were talking about our Grandma's and the way we were brought up.
And if you can say what you want, why can't we say what we want!!!!
Did we say we were trying to influence you and the way you raise your daughters? We have not said any thing about trying to change any one and their beliefs.
If you don't think moral, family or Christian values are important, take a look around. You won't have to look far to see all kinds of stuff going on that is bad for individuals and our country.
If you don't want to read what we put here, then don't.
Granny
Judge not lest ye be judged. LOL, Good job Shawn, quoting the Bible after that disrespectful post.
Granny and Arl, all I can say is thank you for talking about the way it used to be.
Arl, I hope I get the opportunity to tell my mom and dad the same things you said to your dad. I should act on that now.
My grandma, we called her Grammy, died 2 years ago. As long as I can remember, we went to her house for Thanksgiving. She was always cooking or baking something. She would always let me sneak into the kitchen and steal some turkey or ham before the meal was served. She made the best cole slaw and bread rolls. I miss those times.
I hope my daughter has memories like that, when she gets older.
Lowspark,
This country was founded on Christian values. In God we trust, etc. It also allows people to believe what they want, and live life as they see fit. There were many reasons that the early Americans decided to break from England. I think taxation was one of the issues.
This thread is titled "How old is grandma" not "Moral Values."
Lowspark,,,not for nothing what beliefs are you raising them in???? I mean if you aren't a religous man,,,than what?????? I believe in standing firm with my grown kids,,,,like I was raised,,,,if you don't raise kids WITH any beliefs,,,than you have kids saying I need to find myself,,,and parents agreeing with them needing to find themselves,,,,,, and what is the outcome?????? LOST,,,,,CONFUSED,,,KIDS!!!!!! AND LOST CONFUSED PARENTS!!!! THIS IS ALL EXCUSES FOR THIS NEW GENERATION THEORY!!!!!PUHLEEEZE,,,,,, GET OUR OLDTIME TRADTIONAL WAYS BACK AND YOU WILL HAVE WELL ADJUSTED KIDS BACK,,,, otherwise we are going to have kids walking around not knowing who they are ,,,where they are,,,, and who and who not to have respect for,,,,not caring what they wear and what they show,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!! IT JUST SEEMS THE KIDS ARE TRYING TO OVER POWER THE PARENTS,,,WELL NEVER IN MY HOME,,,,I PAY THE MORTGAGE !!! well I can go on and on,,, it seems this is an easy way to raise kids,,,,easy way out,,,,,to much work the old-fashion way,,,,SAD
Scott,,,I hope so,,,,respect was what it was all about,,,,I just was surprised at what you said to Rich,,,I didn't think that would come from you.Maybe it was just a bad day for you,,,,we all have them....you do sound like a nice guy,,, I don't like to get mad at people,,,life is to short,,,,,we need to have fun and help other people have fun.... :) :D ;)
Yes,
We will have kids just like Traveling Frog---lost---don't know who they are---where to go---what to do---where they came from---
I could go on also but I have already proposed a solution~~ :)
Arl and Granny for P and VP---hehe :D

Dear Granny,
The older I get (Im 30) DONT LAUGH- Stick with me on this. In just the 30 short years of my life (I hope, when all is said and done, who knows, I might just have another couple of years, one never knows) -I ramble
Okay, what I was trying to say is... things ARE changing so fast. My first expensive gift is when I was 9 and it was a RECORD PLAYER and 2 RECORDS. haha. Thats just 20 years ago and the 9 year olds of today get I-PODS.
Its a testament to the human psyche that we can keep up with how fast the world moves and changes.
I cant imagine what I will feel about the world at age 58- when at age 30, I can sometimes feel so out of touch. I am beinging to feel less of a person and more of a time constrained robot.
I long for the days when everyone sat together at the table for dinner- but, I suppose I would miss the dishwasher.
Bob Dylan has a song "Times have changed"
...Any minute now, Im expecitng all hell to break loose...
People are crazy and times are strange
Im locked in tight, Im out of range...
I used a camea, things have changed.
This place aint doing me any good
Im in the wrong town, I sit here in Hollywood
Just for a second, I thought I saw someone move
Gonna take dancing lessons, do the Jitterbug fly
Aint no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag
Only a fool here would think he has something to prove
Dont get up, Ma'm - Im only passin through...
People are crazy and times strange
Im locked in tight, Im out of range.
I need a camera, things have changed...
Ive been walking 40 miles of bad road
If the Bible is right, the world will explode
I been trying to get as far away from myself
as I can
Some things are too hot to touch
the human mind can only stand so much
you cant win, with a loosing hand.
Feel like falling in love with the first woman I meet
put her in a wheelbarrow and wheeling her down the street
People are crazy and things are strange
Im out of touch, Im out of range...
I used a camera... things a strange.
...I hurt easy, I just dont show it
you can hurt someone and not even know it.
The next 60 second can feel like an eternity
Gonna get low down, gonna fly high
all the truth in the world adds up to one big lie.

Hi Melissalynn,
Yes, times and things have changed. I can remember before we had electricity at our house. Then I remember all the appliances we got. The younger people today would not know how to survive if they lost everything and had no one to help.
Anyway, there is one thing that never changes and I have held on to it all these years. It is the Love of God. It stays the same, always. :)

Its a testament to the human psyche that we can keep up with how fast the world moves and changes.
I cant imagine what I will feel about the world at age 58- when at age 30, I can sometimes feel so out of touch. I am beinging to feel less of a person and more of a time constrained robot.
