Hey all you New Yorkers!
Question:

Hey! I am meeting my brother in New York City tomorrow and I am hoping some of you locals can offer a few suggestions on what to do. I have only been a couple of times briefly since living out here, so I don't know the area all that well. He definitely wants to do all the tourist stuff... Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building etc, etc. But other than that, we're both sort of just going to wing it. We have about 4 days there to explore, so if you have any suggestions on some of the must see sights only the locals would know about- restaurants, museums, live music, pubs etc- I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!
Katie

Katie,
First of all have a great time!! And there is a little bar in Soho that I love to visit that has some really awesome jazz music. Wayne Krantz is playing there Thursday night, probably around 10ish...he is amazing.

If you like Japanese food the Chow Bar in Soho is excellent. It's on 230W 4th street ( also in Soho ). A tad on the expensive side but worth it.
I'm sure MikeK will be along to give you some ideas!
And last but not least, I haven't forgotten about a Boston gathering, just waiting for some P people to get here!
Take care and have a blast!

I'll let the natives suggest the places since I'm new here but the Delta Grill and Hogs and Heifers or the Red Rock Sallon are a must see. The South Street Seaport area is also pretty neat and I just found out about this cable car that is by the Queensboro/59th st. bridge that I guess is pretty cool. Enjoy your time in the city.

Hi Katie,
How exciting! I wish you had give me more notice! I love to play tour guide! (Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow and I have a million and one things to do before I leave for San Diego on Thursday.!
You've been give some great advice. Here's some more suggestions!
  1. Leave your backpacks in your hotel room. That will make the security check points go a little faster.
  2. Chinatown and Little Italy are fun. There's plenty of good places to eat on Mulberry St. (Pam, her friends Tammy, Major, Ginger and I had some awesome Chinese on Mulberry St. when they came to town a couple of months ago.) There's some great (and inexpensive) Italian places too.
  3. Rockefeller Center Click Here for some additional info.
  4. You mentioned museums. How about Madame Tussaud's on 42nd Street? (Beween 8th Ave and Times Square) Their website seems to be down, but here's a link to some info about it: http://www.ny.com/museums/madame.tussaud.nyc.html. The Museum of Television and Radio, the Museum of Natural History, the Folk Art Museum, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are all excellent choices. In my opinion it's worth a trip uptown to see the the Museum of the City of New York. It's also worth a trip to Queens to see the temporary home of the Museum of Modern Art.
  5. Do you plan on seeing a Broadway Show? You'll be able to get discounted tickets at the TKS TKS booths on Times Square and in the South Street Seaport. (The one in the Seaport is a little hard to find. It's worth seeking it out. It opens at 11:00 a.m. and there's never any line. They only take cash or travelers checks. You won't be able to get tickets for some of the hotter shows, but there's usually a very good selection if you get there early. Here's a link to some additional info: http://tdf.org/tkts/index.html#.
  6. Speaking of Restaurants ... in addition to the ones that people have already recommended ... you really can't go wrong if you walk up Ninth Avenue from say about 43rd Street to about approximately 53rd Street. Some of my favorites include: Zen Palate (vegetarian and no liquor license), Rachel's American Bistro (no website ... kind of pricey ... you'll need reservations. It's located at 608 Ninth Avenue, which is kind of sort of near 43rd St. Its phone number is (212) 957-9050; Jezebel and Cara Mia. When Barbara W. and PJ Leary came to town we had dinner at Luxia, which is on W. 48th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues. I highly recommend it. It's kind of campy and the food isn't anything to write home about, but Jekyll and Hyde (the one in Greenwich Village on 7th Avenue South --- kind of sort of near Christopher Street) is a lot of fun.
  7. Pravda in SoHo makes excellent (but expensive martinis). It looks like a dive from the outside, but looks can be deceiving as the saying goes. We took Bella there. To say that she enjoyed the chocoate martinis would be an understatement. I know that Eric and Flakey Matt like it too.
I hope that this helps. Have fun. And give us some warning the next time you come into town. It would have been great to meet you.
Mike
