JUST VENTING...
Question:

Time to VENT... Was just checking out the boards, and one of the newer posts on the main P board really upset me....I won't go into any details cause I don't want to offend anyone. Then I read another post and if it's not already posted where people will see it really easy, then there should be a notice that the doctors listed in the directory are not NPF doctors, unless I'm wrong. I thought the docs in the directory had contacted the NPF and told them that they wanted to be added to the list because they were interested in treating P patients. If I'm mistaken contribuite it to P on the brain. This isn't the first time I have seen people refer to the directory as NPF doctors. After my P took a bad turn this past winter, I saw one of the docs listed in the directory, it was a joke, and it didn't leave me laughing. What could have been life threatening, he mis-diagnoised me, he gave me a script for aquaphor and donevex. Duh aquaphor is over the counter, and I told him I can't use donevex. Didn't matter that was HIS treatment of choice. He didn't look any farther than what he could see on my arms and legs (only because I was wearing a tank top and shorts) I had a skirt and jacket with me that I had worn over the shorts and top, he had the nerve to say put your skirt back on before you go back into the waiting room cause you'll freak the other patients out. NICE Attitude. I've wanted to say it for a while, do your homework, just because a doc is in the directory doesn't mean their good. There are good docs and not so knowledgeable docs. You have to be educated enough about P and your body to know what treatment and or meds are in your best interest. And if your not happy with a doc keep looking till you find one that your happy with. OK I'm done...WHEW I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER...

Merkinsmom,
If you scroll down the directory you will see that it indicates at the very top of the physician's listing, in the left hand corner, whether or not he or she is a member. The members are listed first, followed by the non members.

The Dr I went to was listed as treating both P and PA. She knew very little about PA and absolutely nothing about P. I asked her for a prescrition for my scalp and she called a derm to find out what to give me. I could have given her several suggestions. She told me she didn't know anything about P and said I should see a derm. My problem is that I'm on medicaid and I can't find a derm who will accept medicaid. My PCP will give me anything I suggest to her, so I don't have a hard time getting topicals. I haven't been back to the Rheumy since I quit the methotrexate in Dec. I'm really afraid that she will give me something that will mask symthoms if my Leukemia relapses.

Well all I can say is that doc is a MORON!!!!!!!!
And I just responded to the person who said cats carry among other things bubonic plague!!!
That one upset me and I am not a cat lover and I do not care if he was offended!
But you guys know me I say what I think....

Come on people. The list of docs here is divided into members and non members. If we are lucky we can find a doc who is experienced and anxious to help us. But we will still run into docs who are morons no matter what. That doesn't mean we should dis the NPF in its sincere attempt to help us locate someone.

About the Dr I found.
The original post was NOT dissing Drs. on the list. It was an explanation that these Drs. have made themselves KNOWN to NPF.....They are areNOT NPF Drs.

My point is that in the listing it gives you the information whether they are a member or not. It even lists the members first. So many of them are indeed members. It's up to you to be sure to make that observation. Your statement makes it sound like none of them are members.

I've never noticed the doctor's being referred to as NPF doctor's, but I'm sure the mistake has been made a couple of times. I found my doctor on that list and he is a god send! I'm sure there are plenty of doctor's there that are not going to be the best and my even be close to the worst, but that can be weeded out by asking questions before making an appointment. Many people don't know where to find a doctor and the choice is choosing from an insurance list or narrowing it further by matching it with the NPF list. Generally if you can get into see one of the doctors that are on the NPF medical advisory board you will be in good hands, but even that is no gaurentee...mostly because those doctors are usually booked beyond belief. The directory is a very useful resource and should continue to be used....if you want to be sure everything is what you are expecting, then put a call into the doctor first (wait for his return call, don't talk to the nurse) and ask him some questions. Actually, a lot can be determined from a doctor's return call (how fast he returns calls and if he has a set time to return calls each day). I would suggest reported bad experiences to the NPF....perhaps they will remove doctors names that have complaints about them.

Note from the Psoriasis Foundation Member Services Coordinator:
Just as a clarification, the way the Physician Directory is put together is the Foundation sends a survey to as many dermatologists and rheumatologists we can locate. The derms and rheums that return the surveys are listed in the Directory. That's it.
Unfortunately, at the present time, the Foundation does not have the resources to visit or screen every doctor in the listing. Therefore, it is up to each and every person to do his or her own screening.
The Foundation would greatly appreciate any feedback you have on any given doctor on our list. Simply contact Constance de Amezcua, Medical Relations Manager in the Foundation, at 800.723.9166, ext. 386, or cdeamezcua@here, with feedback.
We appreciate your thoughts, and hope this helps clarify for all of you.
Sincerely,
Eve-Maridy Rice

I think word of mouth is another way to find a good Dr. There are so many people here from around the world. If someone shares there general location, we should be able to help from othe NPF members experiences. All you have to do is ask!

To add to what the previous poster said, I've been looking for a new derm. My current one, will not prescribe me anything except for topicals. He hasn't seen me for a while, but when I visited a derm out in Denver, he was willing to start me on enbrel in a study since he said I had severe plaque psoriasis. If anyone knows of a good derm in northern california, please let me know. I have all ready seen Price, Becker, and Raskin. They aren't covered by my insurance anymore. Thanks for all your help.

I don't know California so I don't know if these doctors are in your area, but they will be the best.
Gerald Weinstein, M.D.
University of California, Irvine
Irvine, CA
John Y.M. Koo, M.D.
University of California, San Francisco
San Francisco, CA
Both of these doctors are on the NPF medical advisory board, so it's a safe bet that they will be real good!
