Just Had The Wierdest Thing Happen To Me
Question:

I was surfing the net for any new info on Psoriasis when I came upon my member name here. I clicked on that link, and low and behold everything I have wrote here pops up. I did not like that. I have wrote thing here I would not want just anybody reading. I know that anybody can come here and read it but that is different. Somebody can just put in my nam and there it is, that just freaked me out. You all should do a search on your names here and see what happens.

Answers:

I edited this for personal reasons.

What search engine were you using???

Answers:

I think I was using Google, but if not it was MSN.

Wow - I tried it and this was what I found:

Kind of freaked me out as my 1 year anniversary is fast approaching.
OK, back to the kind, humble Steve - I love you guys - all of you!
You will never have any idea how much those messages (from every one of you) meant to me!
PS - Ksayre, sorry to step on your thread.

And that is why your member name should not be your real name. I thought everyone knew this?

I googled psoriasis and my online name and it brought me to a link that took me right into the boards. I was able to pull up the list of members.
I'm going to copy this to the web master here at NPF.

Ive done the same thing before also. I was shocked to say the least. It brought up a ton of stuff I had posted on yahoo groups and various other websites. Dunno if anything can be done about that but meh...

Answers:

actually thats how i found this forum
because i was searching for something related to teens & psoriasis and it brought me here.

This is not cool. There are 11 pages of yahoo results when I type my user name in. The events calendar, with all of our birthdays, comes up too. Sorry guys, but I'm going to have to seriously reconsider posting for a while. I'll still be around, in chat rooms and PMs, but I'm going to be really careful about what I post on the boards. I may also try to find out about pulling one of my threads... anyone that read it knows which one it is and YUP. It came up on Yahoo. I don't mind sharing feminine stuff with you guys, but the whole world??????
HUGS til later. XXXX

Hey cryfornight, I'm afraid to search for my stuff.....Lord only knows what I'll find....anywho....you can go back and delete threads and posts... it's somewhere on the post that says edit. you can go in and remove the entire thread as long as your the one who started it....and you can edit/delete any of your posts......I might be here all night editing....

Answers:

You can only edit for about 15 hours or so. After that you posts are there more or less for ever!
It is kind of wierd. Fortunately, I haven't said anything here that will come back to haunt me.

Well crumb bunnies.......and horsey feathers.... I don't think I've ever wrote anything that will come back to haunt me...I didn't know people other than "members" could view our profile....guess I didn't read the fine print...

IF they ever find my name That's very true, Sally. Someone would have to know your screen name in order to search for it on google, etc.

Answers:

I also just did a google search for the screen name that I use on another message board that I sometimes post to. You guessed it. I was able to find my profile there too. (I also discovered that more then one person has that screen name. I was able to find at least a half a dozen websites where someone had posted using that name!) I'm not that concerned. As I mentioned in my previous post, you would have to know someone's screen name in order to do a search for it.

I, too, just did a search on MSN. There were 118 responses when I put in my screen name and mine was like 94. But this is obviously "vbulletin" putting this out there. I DO NOT like that they put "add mbowden to your buddy list" what right do they have to do that?? I'm getting off this site (after a nice note to the head honcho). I never gave anyone permission to give out my info. Sold again. Sorry guys. I won't be back.

Oh how nice! On my google search, just below the link to this site the next thing is a page of nude modeling photos of some heatherf!!!! Can I change my name to something that wouldn't be such a common search?

I've known this for a long time, however, I have no fear. All are welcome at my house as long as you come in peace. Bring war and you'll have to first deal with me and my guns. If you get me then you get my dog, his hair stands up on his back and he's tough. If you get through him you get my wife. She's not afraid either. And then my daughter. Shes tough to, already knows right and wrong. Now, right when you think you got her, we'll all come back from the dead and get you. So bad guys on the internet beware, use my information properly.
Now, realistically. A lot of members are having an issue here with privacy that I can certainly understand.
I do not understand why the webmaster has not addressed this yet. He was very quick to close our support group discussion thread, however, has not addressed this issue as of yet. Possibly he's waiting for approval from Portland. Webmaster..i have no privacy concerns with this site, looks like you might have a few others that have some concerns. I am not web savy enough to address this question for you my friends, otherwise I would.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I'm not sure what the big deal is. I'm also not sure that the NPF is putting anything out there. This is a public site on the World Wide Web. It is open for anyone to come here and read anything that you have posted on this public website. When you do a search on the Internet, it scans the World Wide Web looking for matches. People read what’s posted in here everyday. How is it any different if they read it because they found the link through a google or yahoo search?
As far as someone being able to add you to their buddy list, all that does is make it more convenient to tell if you are online or to send you a PM, functions that can be done with out a buddy list anyway.
Unless you have used your real name and posted your address publicly somewhere, your identity is concealed.
I must be missing something, I just don't get all the concern.
I'm sure someone will be willing to enlighten me.

Steve, being that you have to log in to get to the message boards suggests that this really is a private area of the public site established by the private NPF. As far as I know, the NPF does not receive any govt funds so it would not be a public organization.
There is a lot of information about us on these boards, realize it or not. I know where you were last weekend, I saw the photos and new it was coming.
Don't worry steve, you're a good guy, I am not to fear.
I think some people in possibly different circumstances than us do have a legitimate privacy concern here.
The internet can be a scary place, we have a full time detective devoted to it in regards to crime in our small city. Thats a lot of cop for the world wide web. We're just a small city.

That is incorrect. You do not need to log in. Anyone can come on here and read anything that it is posted. That makes it public in my view.

Answers:

Dear everyone,
As most of you should realize, this message board is free and public. This means it's available to anyone browsing the internet... including search engines.
I guess I should reiterate that you should never post any information on a public message board unless you want the information to be public.
Also note that no user's personal information is availble via google or any other search engine; only that information that a user chooses to share with the open community via a message post, or that which they put on the calendar and their public profile page.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask.

Answers:

Oh, thats right. I bet it is you only need to be a friend or member to post. shame on me. Sorry, i've been a member to long and totally forgot that you can read for free before posting.
you're right on that one. I get confused to easily in my old age. Maybe it's the psoriasissupport.com that makes you sign up before you can read.
Hey steve can you check out that relieva, looks a little scammy to me right now. I have another thread on it and it is out of new jersey...see i do know where you live. The toll-free won't work in michigan for some reason.
