......... Attention Webmaster ..........
Question:

Can you please fix the screen size usage of this site.
At present, we only have approx 3 quarters ( nearly 2 thirds ) of your screen to work with.
After downloading your home page & opening it with Namo Webeditor, I can see that your main tables are set in pixels, not percentages.
If you struggle with sorting your database then let me know as I'm associated with a vBulletin site closing in on 1,661,000 posts and 1,028 users online at the same time.

Hey Spiderman,
I appreciate your input, but there are a lot of different variables that go into the way this site works.
First of all, using percentages instead of actual values is useful (sometimes) but if you're interested in maintaining perfect control over the look of a website, it becomes more problematic . Also if you use percentages, you have to incorporate stretchability into the design and thus you have to add more graphic backgrounds that allow that stretching and that of course increases the bandwidth of the page.
On many community oriented sites, like the one you're involved in, this may be fine, but how is your load time and threading on low-band retro machines in third world contries? Are you sure that those percentages migrate to netscape? how far back? Do you have web-tv clients?
Decisions on site design and portability become more much an aspect of lowest-common denominator when your building an international site.
If you think the here structure is limiting, you should have seen the restrictions when I built visa.com. It had to work everywhere under all conditions, and if you were a single pixel off on some strange I.E. knockoff in southeast china, they freaked out.
I hope this explains a bit of why the site works the way it does....

Hey Eric,
I for one, think this NPF site is nothing short of BRILLIANT. I've been impressed with its capabilities since the first time I navigated through it!
It was interesting to read your reply, as I learned a little bit about the challenges of building international sites. Again, I'm impressed.
So YOU built the Visa Website! WHOA! Who knew? I'm humbled by your professional expertise.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for doing such a great job for the members of the NPF.

That surprises me, considering your limited knowledge….~lol~
BTW-- I own stock in Nike, would you like some help picking out some shoes?
Keep up the good work, Eric.

I'm also happy to report the site seems to be zipping along again, just like the old days.
Whatever you did, thanks Eric!

I would just like to point out that Spiderman's questions and suggestions were very valid. As someone who has a giant monitor with my resolution set to 2048x1536, I also deal with sites that use itsy bitsy parts of the screen and leave a large part of my screen empty and seemingly wasted.
And as soon as everyone on earth upgrades to 62'inch plasma screens for their computer with broadband connections, I'll be the first one to start using all that web-real-estate :)
As for the site slowdown, we found out that level(3) a major internet backbone provider on the east coast was having catastrophic connection losses. (this means their internet broke) it slowly degraded over the course of a couple weeks causing internet traffic jams all over the place.
Since it's been fixed, it seems to have solved most of the slow-site complaints...
