1 Attachment(s) Sally, after reading your post about your cat, I immediately sent an E-mail to my daughter-in-law
at work asking her if she could help in any way as she had a kitten with Urinary problems which is
common for cats to have. The following is what she replied.....
==========================================
I'm sorry to say that it will probably not EVER go away. I had a cat once
with that problem. Here is what I learned:
Pay attention to the amount of "Ash" that is in the cat food. Keep it at or
lower than 3.0 mg. (I think it's mg.) Sprinkle salt in the food forcing the
cat to drink LOTS of water. Always keep a bowl of FRESH water available for
him to drink.
I tried all of these things, but still, my cat never recovered. He finally
died.
=============================================
For what it's worth Sally, I hope it helps somewhat. Another Vet's opinion.
Pleas keep me informed of his progress.

Sally,
I read your post this morning and didn't respond because I don't have cats....I raise birds and they aren't a good combination.
I was sure that someone would have responded by now, and I didn't want this thread to get lost and buried.
Both of my Sisters had cats that had chronic urinary tract infections. One fed hers a special cat food that was formulated for that problem. I think it was Science Diet, but not sure. The other sister had a sex change operation done on the cat. Seriously! They re-worked his plumbing. I guess female cats don't have the problem.
I hope someone here knows how to help.
Margaret

Has the vet suggested that he go on any special food for cats with urinary tract problems? If you search for "cat" and "urinary tract infection" (which I just did on Google) 28,000 plus results came up.You need to look at the sites that are pet care related, not the ones trying to sell you a 'holistic' product. There can be many causes for and types of UTI's and I would start with your vet's suggestions. I also assume that the cat has been neutered, even though you called him a 'tom' cat. In some extreme cases, where the cat develops crystals in the urine that block
its emission, a cat's penis may need to be removed.
Here are some websites to start with:
Here is a Cat Specific Website which has a lot of informed members, with a health section. You do need to join, but it is free. You can search the health suggestion for ideas, or post your own questions.

Have never replied to a thread b4 hope this is ok. My male cat just got out of the hosp. too. My vet is a feline specialist. She put him on a prescription food, flushed him out, he was blocked totally. Gave him some antibiotics and pain killers. She said it may never go away. If it happens again, he will have to have an operation to alter his gender basically. They have to be monitored the rest of their lives. Female cats (I had one that had urinary problems, too) get along better because they can take antibiotics and do not block as easily as males. Hope this helps. Sorry about your kitty. I sincerely know how it is. My cat is only a year and a half old.

My kitty found us about 4/5 years ago.....he jumped at my studio window late one night when i was working, made this loud bump and scared me half to death....I jumped up. looked out into the dark and saw this kitty looking up at me, with this forlorn look.
well....I thought no way......we have a dog and they probably wouldn't get along....!:( ...then he started jumping up on the window sill...meowing for attention.....so I would talk to him...but thats all....I had steeled my heart to those whimpers.
So his next act was to get himself stranded up one of our 100 ft. trees!!!.....dh climbed up on our roof next to the tree, trying to lure him down with food we put in the long handled cleaning net we use for the swimming pool...no luck!!!!! (and we worked hours) finally dark came and another day.....there he was at our doorstep with that look again.....we were so happy to see him, out of the tree, that he came on into our house and lives....(he and sage, our golden, get along great)
thanks to Zara's websites she sent, I spent last night going over them and found a vet that has been working with this condition since the early nineties....and has come up with a formula that dissolves the chrystals within hours...its main ingredient is a form of cranberry extract....most of the sites didn't give much encouragement, but he explained the whys and wherefores. so I ordered some for $19 dollars to try....before I would have them operate......anyway thats what people (women usually) are told to drink with any urinary infection....so we'll see.
aren't these computers great!!!!!!! here's the site for anyone interested

Please be careful. The three vets that I use as I said are cat specialists only. They said the main threat to the cat's life is crystals forming AT ALL because male cats can not pass them. Believe me my cat was literally hours away from dying. I am very much into natural remedies for myself and the critters, I have three cats and two dogs. But believe me it is vital to get him on a prescription food. It's water content is very high and that neutralizes the 'bad' stuff. THe cranberry can not hurt him I am sure. Just please be careful. I have tons of info on thisproblem my vet gave me. I'd love to share it with you. It is about five pages. It explains what is happening. This particular kitty was five weeks old when it got stuck in a car engine. When I first saw him at the vet's he was burnt and cut up. His lives are running out but I won't let go of him easily. Good luck. Keep me posted on how he is going and how the cranberry is working. I will ask the DRs. if they have heard of it. Keep him well.
