Amateur gardeners corner
Question:

1 Attachment(s) Getting outdoors and playing in the garden is a relaxing pastime for a lot of people. I am an amateur gardener, and can use some help. I plant so many different plants I cannot keep up with all of their names.
I thought that some of the more astute gardeners on NPF message boards might be willing to help me learn what the names of an assortment of different plants are that have been planted, and in some cases just sort of popped up. There are quite a few, but I will only be posting one at a time.
Can you name mystery plant #1?

I'm a terrible gardener, but I am a landscape architect and was called a "plant geek" by the curator of living collections at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston. Unidentifiable plants...? Bring 'em on. I'll admit I'm not as conversant in all the common names of plants, because they vary by region, and I do have trouble with ornamental varieties and cultivars that have been bred to look different.
My guess is Lamium purpureum, red deadnettle. Or henbit deadnettle , which is another similar species. They hybridize pretty easily, and you could have a cultivar between the red and another kind.

Cool! I think you nailed it! I have about 20 more photos of different flora, and I promise to try and make them a bit clearer. New photo software is not being very user friendly. :(
How about this little beauty (some will be easier than others)?

Answers:

That's a white geranium... (Which is not actually in the species Geranium but a cultivar of Pelargonium). The red/pink/coral colors are pretty popular too. If you are in the south, I think they survive outside all year, in the north you can bring them inside in pots and they require nothing but a teeny amount of water to over winter and they will live forever (if you don't forget that you left them in the basement).
OK, I just saw where you are from. NJ isn't south, so the geraniums have to come inside for the winter.

Hang on a second.....Eranthis, you're giving Tim all this valuable information for free :D
Geez, Tim is the clever one!
Can I post pictures of the weeds and bald patches in my yard and have someone tell me what to do with the mess? I swear, we just spent an afternoon putting down weedkiller and the darn things just got greener and healthier!!

I can tell you what the weeds are, I just can't really tell you what to do about them. I can design something that will look great (I hope), and I'm usually good at selecting the right plants for other people's gardens.
The minute I try to get something to grow, it dies... and the minute I try to eradicate something, it thrives. I guess its sort of like being an interior designer who specializes in kitchens but can't cook or clean...
I'm lucky because I live in the woods and have a lovely red maple swamp for a front yard. I can't top that, with all the pretty ferns and shrubs, but I'm working (ever so slowly) on a boardwalk/trail through it. I'm trying to rehabilitate a meadow for songbirds in my sideyard, but I think it is too small... Basically, I've decided to let nature take its course and if the outcome is good, I'll lay out a path so people can see it.

The flower is much cuter than I am... one of the few things I have planted that has been somewhat reliable.

C'mon, give me a plant to ID... don't get me started with the promise of 20 plants you don't know. this is what they do to entertain themselves at work... they pluck all the leave off a plant, or bring in parts of houseplants and say they had them growing as weeds in their yards, just to stump me... I live for plant ID...
damn, I am a plant geek.

Answers:

LOL Chris :)
I do not want to give you a plant iD overdose. It is late and I just returned home from my beautiful niece's wedding. The wedding was beautiful too.
I will try to reduce a few more of the plant photos tomorrow, but although there are about 20, alot of them I know by their common name. I'll post them anyway, just because they are pretty, and do bring a bit of joy into my life. It is nice to share the good things with others. PS, I really do appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge.
Too funny alli, if I didn't have weeds, I would not have a lawn at all.
Thanks!

1 Attachment(s) In the event that you are still waiting here is another flower, but it grows more like a weed and about 18"-24" tall. In years past, there were several different colors but now only the deep blue remain.

damn, I am a plant geek. :) I have the photo reduction (filesize) problem figured out and hopefully I will be able to post clearer pics quicker. I think that this intial (late spring) batch will be approx 30 strong. With a few redundancies and color variations thrown in.

No pressure Tim - it sounds like you had a nice time at your niece's wedding!
I welcome these questions, because clients are always asking about this plant and that plant, because of the whole landscape architecture thing. My work is more about stormwater management and road design, but if I don't know my plants, I look like an idiot. I know a lot of native plants because of the ecological assessments I do, but if I am not doing a lot of planting plans (and usually, I don't have clients who will pay for them, the local nursery is a lot more cost-effective), I forget the names... this kind of quizzing keeps me on top of it. I have to take the 2nd part of the licensing exam soon, and rumor has it that they are beginning to look more closely at plant selection than they used to... so you aren't taking up my time, just helping me study.
your blue flower is a bachelor's button (aka cornflower, which in the northeast is sometimes the name given to chicory, which is not the same chicory you buy in the grocery store for a salad... but may be the same chicory used for a yucky coffee substitute) Centaurea cyanus(vis a vis the wedding, not sure how appropriate...)
here is information about it from one of my favorite plant websites:

Thats so cool, I don't live too far away from the Arnold Arboretum, did you intern there? :D

Answers:

No, but I wanted to. I went to the GSD, but couldn't figure out transportation from Cambridge to JP. It was one of my favorite places, though. Mt. Auburn Cemetery was closer, and had almost as many awesome plants, so I hung around there more.

Answers:

My grandmother is buried at Mt.Auburn...another incredible place, I was really surprised they had tours thru there!
Cool beans...okay carry on, I'm really enjoying the plant talk here lol...Maybe I will throw some up ... :D

Here is another easy and common flower that most of us know and love.

Tim,
Is the little yellow flower in post # 18 a marigold?? ;)

Answers:

The one above is a Tiger Lily (Lilium lancifolium, Hemerocallis Fulva) :) Yes it is a Lily, but as far as I know, not a "Tiger" lily. It is some sort of hybrid and the flower is as big as it looks. approx 8" across HUGE!! Tiger lilies will be coming later, so hold that thought :D 5 bonus points for providing a latin name and I have no idea if it is correct or not. My wife bought these bulbs from QVC and they are one of the few plants from QVC that have actually lived up to the sales pitch. When I walk outside in the morning the air is filled with a wonderful fragrance. We have about 50 of these plants after the inital planting of 10, 2 years ago and they are spectacular.

Answers:

Tim,
Is the little yellow flower in post # 18 a marigold?? ;) Right on little lady! We plant these as a natural bug deterrant, and I dont know if they are effective or not. At any rate, they sure are pretty!

Answers:

1 Attachment(s) Another tricky flower. we have two varieties of these and the flowers are pretty much the same. The difference is in the foliage.
