Question:
Ok I know this is a weird place to post this question, but I have been looking all over the internet for tips.
Anyways, on Saturday my mother wants to remove a cast iron bathtub from my grandmothers house. She wants to restore it. The bathtub is on the 2nd floor of the house so we will have to get it off the front porch. We were hoping to bring it down the steps but are worried that because of the condition they are in and the weight of the tub someone will fall through them, so hopefully we can somehow get it off the porch. The house is being torn down in a couple of weeks so it doesn't matter if there is any damage to doors, railings etc.
So my question is this. Does anyone know how much an antique cast iron bathtub would weigh approximately. The bathtub is about 6 feet long. And also any tips on how we're going to move this thing other than having as many people as possible to lift it?
Thank you to anyone who can give me tips, I appreciate it!
And if no one has any idea about this just wish the poor guys that are gonna be lifting this thing lots of luck and hope for no personal injury, lol. ;)
I don't know but I can suggest a site where someone might be able to help. It is www.brownstoner.com -- it is a site for people who are buying and restoring old brownstones. Click on forum and post your question. It is a long shot, but it is the kind of thing those folks might know. You may have to register to post.
Thanks Annie,
I have posted my question at the site you gave me. Hopefully someone will be able to tell me something, lol. At any rate it also looks like it might be a good site to tell my mom about for when she goes to restore the bathtub. :D
Between 300 and 350 pounds some a little more depends on the style

Oh those poor guys lifting the thing, lol.
You might want to rent a "cherry picker" at the local (or as local as you can get) rent-all company.
With one of those - or a heavy duty bucket truck - you could pick the bathtub up from the second floor - through a window perhaps and not have to worry about bringing it down the stairs.
Of course, if you want to be labor intensive, try using a 2x4 across the tub lengthwise; strap it to the tub; and lift from either end.....it'll spread the load among 2 or 4 folks depending on how long the 2x4 is and the number of folks doing the lifting. (Or, you could use two 2x4 across the tub...spread the load among 4 "lifters"). These will also spread the load on the floor boards so that all the weight isn't in one location and could prevent anyone from breaking through the floor boards.
Have fun
