Help me decide where to go for a vacation!!
Question:

Thanks to a nice tax return and a generous monetary gift, my husband and 4 year old son and I are going to be able to take our first family vacation together this summer!! We live in east central Indiana, and we'd like to go to the Atlantic coast to the beach. (Well, I would like to go to the beach to show the ocean to our son and to get some of those healing beach rays--my husband isn't too crazy about the ocean but has decided to go along with it for our sakes.) If I get a good part in our community theater's summer musical, Into the Woods (if you're familiar with the show, I'm trying out for the Baker's wife and for Jack's mother) then we may not have the time to get to go to the ocean, but we'd still like to get away to someplace with lots of water. So, I need your help. Please reply to this thread and tell us where your favorite place to vacation on the Atlantic coast is, even the name of the resort or hotel. And to you Midwesterners out there, tell me where some good places are in the Midwest to get away and have some fun with a little one. We won't be going to any amusement parks--he's just too little for that, he's scared of even kiddie rides. I want sun and water, and my husband would like to sneak away for some fishing or golf. We'll be going in August (if I make the show--cross your fingers!). I'm really looking forward to all of your suggestions.....

If hubby does not like the Ocean, go to Orlando, Fl
Cocoa Beach, Fl is about a 45 minute drive, and is one of the prettiest beaches in North America.
Hubby can sty in Orlando, and go see the Black and White whale, and you can go see one of the most beautiful beaches in the nation.
If you wait until June 16th to go, I will be 10 minles south of Cocoa Beach at my timeshare in Satellite Beach, FL.Cocoa Beach also has the Worlds largest Surf Shop RonJons.com
You would love it there.
There is also St Augistine, FL
They have a beautiful beach, and is the oldest city in the nation.
There are several things to do in the city, and the beach is just a stones throw away.
Also the Lighthouse is Haunted (so they say). I have climbed that lighthouse several time in my life, and I just watch Ghost Hunters (I think) and they went in there with all of their equipment, and saw some strange things, strange enough that when I watched the show, I was.... well... a little uneasy for the rest of the evening.
PM me if you want some other loacations.

I second, Scott's great advice. Every kid (and their family) should get to experience Disney World. You can do three days at Disney and then explore the beaches Scott mentioned.
If Disney World isn't your thing, the beaches at Wildwood, NJ (http://www.wildwoodsnj.com/) and Rehoboth, DE (http://www.rehoboth.com/) are great places for family vacations.
I hope this helps.

I would try for the ocean if possible but here is a place not too far to travel !!!
http://www.sleepyhollowbeach.com/welcome.htm
they have a map of the grounds, check facilities (accommodations) rates, I looked for fishing but didn't see anything...but it is on Lake MI so I'm sure somewhere they have fishing excursions...looks like fun and sun.....I love the sand on Lake Mi...my husband and I grew up going to the Lake Michigan beachs during teen years...and took our kids there when we got older..
and then there is
http://www.mackinacisland.org/
a great place for kids and parents....no cars allowed on the island...there are bikes to rent and horse and buggy rides...might be nice for a 2-3 day stay...

Hey fellow Hoosier..
Couldn't help but put my thoughts in.. Check out dunes properties or wild dunes resorts on line. It's just minutes from Charleston SC in the Isle Of Palms area.. A couple options to check out Ocean club or the boardwalk. ots of stuff and the beach is not crowded.. You would love it we go there every year, so much i think we qualify for residency. takes about 11-12 hrs drive and about 2 hrs flight into Charleston airport.
We know all the good spots to eat and do things there, and if your huby loves golf he will find it at wild dunes in the Isle of Palms resort.Nice quiet and relaxing... i said R E L A X I N G ........
the number to call is 888-778-1876 to dunes
If you need a link see quicklinkmikek to see if he can hook you up.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are nice. We visit Hatteras every year and it is so peaceful, and we catch so much fish. It has been a great vacation for my 3 boys for 17 years in a row. We rent a house and it is a much better deal than a hotel or condo.
Good luck in your choice.

My cousins go the Outer Banks every year and they LOVE it! (I adore Cape Cod and the Maine coast, but weekend traffic in the Northeast in the summer is a horror!) Florida is a good bet if you want golf and fishing PLUS beaches.

Thanks so much for your replies, guys! My hubby read all of your replies and started doing research on all the places you suggested! I gotta admit, I'm interested in Delaware--never been there, seems like not too long of a drive for a 4 year old to endure! Anyway, I'm bumping this back up, any more suggestions? Where would you like to go if it were mid-August and you were taking a 4 year old on his first vacation to the ocean? Oh, and Midwesterners, tell us about some good places just in case we have to stay inland---Sally, we looked at Sleepy Hollow Beach in Michigan, looks GREAT! Hubby and I went two years ago without the little one to St. Ignace, spent a day at Mackinac Island--we're afraid to go back, because we're afraid we'll never have such a PERFECT time again! In July, the temp never got above 78, the humidity was low, hubby (who is a singer, too) and I went to karaoke three out of the 5 nights we were there! The only bad thing that happened was the night we lost our butts at the casino, and obviously that was our fault!!
More suggestions, please!!!

Hey folks, I've heard many people talk about how wonderful Myrtle Beach is. Is it really pretty? Is there tons of stuff to do? Have any of you been there? All I can do now is think about getting away...

hi Peggy,
I lived in Myrtle Beach for the summer when I was 13 a million years ago lol. Still visit now and then as I have relatives in the area.
Unfortunately they took down the Pavillion which had 38783927 rides and arcades.
My sister and her kids just came back they had a blast. They went to the aquarium, nscar racing place for kids, mini golf, one of the many water parks....and of course the beach, where she thought she would call me and tell me there was not a cloud in the sky when we had a mini hurricane going on here lol.
I'm sure you will have fun no matter where you go!

I have been there years ago. It is a little too crowded for my taste, but there are lots of things to do there. I am sure you will have a blast anywhere you decide to visit.
Have a great day,
Cindy
