Chlorine?
Question:

I have heard that chlorine helps psoriasis. Has anyone found this to be true? I'm trying to find possible relief for the winter, since I won't be in the sun a lot.

Hey Tat2u,
I am a swimmer in the summer, I have personally found that chlorine has a neg. effect on my psoriasis. To begin with I had no problem with it, but this summer it became where anytime I get into the pool I get a few GP bumps. For me, as long as i shower and change right after swimming im okay. I hope it has a posititive effect on your psoriasis.

I'm not sure that it's the chlorine as much as it is the moisture and the sun. My son always clears up a little bit in the summer when he's running around shirtless and spending alot of time in the pool. Unfortunatly, we've never seen total clearing, but a little bit is better than none at all. :) I'm convinced it has everything to do with the water and the sun and his mother chasing him around with a bottle of lotion all day.
Have you considered phototherepy, or a membership to a tanning salon? Maybe salt baths will give you some releif or soaking in a hot tub if you have one available in doors.

After spending my first summer in the Arizona dessert and basking in the sun and swimming in our wonderful pool I have found that the chloride has had no effect on my psoriasis. I do know that sunbathing to me is a definite aide and I also always take a shower after I come in from the pool to wash off any residular chlorine left on the skin.
It is also imprtant to remember never to allow yourself to burn and always moisturize after swimming.

Chlorine works well for me as long as it's mixed with the sun. I always seem to clear if I go to a waterpark. I'm in and out of the water and sun all day. It does make me itch to death for a day or so afterwards though. The ithcing is because my p is clearing. I don't get the same results from the ocean water.

Hi Tat2U,
This is one of those "it depends" questions. Some people report that chlorine either has no effect on their psoriasis or that it actually helps them clear. Other people (myself include) find that chlorine has a negative impact on their psoriasis. I suffer for weeks, if I go into a swimming pool or hot tub that's been treated with chlorine. (The heat from the hot tub also bothers me.) Even if I take a shower afterwards, the chlorine causes my psoriasis to become very, very angry. It's irritated. It's dry. It itches. It's cracked. You get the picture. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones whose psoriasis actually benefits from chlorine.
(If I use chlorine bleach in the laundry, I have to run what ever I've bleached through a second complete wash cycle -- without detergent -- to remove all traces of bleach.)
I hope this helps.
Mike
