Question:
Well....Columbus may not have discovered America. Such a notion is in dispute. This thread deals with the contributions Italians have made in America.
Its a cellebration in all things Italian. Its incredible the achievements my culture and heratige has had in the world and in the United States. We are more than what Hollywood would have you believe my people are like.
My people have contributed a great deal in this land we share. We are part of a tapestry of cultures that no other country can ever hope to achieve. This is what makes out land unique. Its been said that one can gain citizenship in France but can never be a French-men; one can gain citizenship in Japan but can never be Japanese. Yet one can gain citizenship in America and be an American.
Now mind you things were not always easy with new immigrants comming to a new land. Disparaging names like "Dago" and "Wop" were the popular buzz words during the turn of the century (and beyond) as immigrants from Italy, mostly from the south such as Sicily, arrived to Ellis Island hoping to seek a better life. Lee Iacocca, a now retired chairman from Chrysler Corp., said that when he was a youngster he got excited whenever his family had a pizza party. His classmates riduculed him saying what is a pizza party? Is that a Wop thing? He was a visionary. He had a dream of owning a chain of pizza parlors and this was prior to Ray Croc and his dealings with McDonalds. Yet the automotive industry called to him instead. How about Don Amici, an Acadamy Award winning actor for the movie Cocoon? In an interview he said that as a child he was always fighting because of who he is. He stopped fighting after doing a thourough study of his Italian heratige and realized there was much to be proud about.
As you'll see shortly, when you click the link, there is a lot to be proud about. Much of the information you are about to read I didnt even know. Yet it thrills me to know that we as a people have meant a lot to the development of the new world.
The one thing I do know about Italians are the things you may already know. We love to laugh, we love to love, we love to share at a large table with as many freinds and relatives we can find. We are generous. We can be pigheaded especially when disputing a mark in a game of bocce ball. Of course our mothers will always be saints. Our godfathers and godmothers are always respected. Wine is a present from God and extra virgin olive oil is an edible liquid gold. We think that there are no better soccer players than Italians. And no, we do not wear gold chains with a jogging outfit.
I ask you, forgive this self-indulgent man for creating this self-indulgent thread. This is a thing I wanted to share with you all. Please reflect on the following link: http://home1.gte.net/vzeoo153/italian_american.html as you enjoy a happy and blessed Columbus day. Ciao.
