Thanks Sandy. Mine flies all year.
Please don't forget the folks in DC (the Pentagon).

Sandy,
I was in NYC last week and saw the beams of light that they turned on as a tribute. I was with my sister in law who was at the scene of the horror. My heart still aches for all of those poor families & friends who lost loved ones.
Not something I will forget in my lifetime.

I live with the reminder all the time. I also fly my flag year round. I live with the fact that freedom is not free. I am the proud parent of one of our defenders of freedom. My son leaves for a year of duty in Iraq in two weeks. Lets all pray for the fight on terrorism. Lets pray that there will never be another 9-11.

Answers:

We will be thinking of you and praying for your son as he heads to Iraq. I hope that everyone, no matter how they feel about this war, will support our young men and women in uniform.
I, too, have children in uniform. My oldest son is still in training, but will finish by June. My oldest daughter is currently on shore duty here in the DC area, but has already been to the Persian Gulf since this started. On 9/11 she was in her final year at the US Naval Academy. I will never forget the terror in her voice when she finally got thru to me that day, wanting to know if we knew anything about her dad. We were among the lucky ones~~~ It was late in the day, but I finally learned that my kids still had their dad and I was not a widow. My heart still breaks for the children who didn't get good news.

On this day five years ago, I remember my friend Betty Ong, on flight 11 who bravely called American to identify hijackers knowing her own demise.
Being stuck for 9 days in Taipei waiting for US airspace to clear to be able to return home to a series of memorials for not only fellow flight attendants but for another dear friend of mine who was a high ranking naval officer in the Pentagon.
For all those who lost friends and family on this dreadful day five years ago, and for the families of those who continue the fight to keep America safe, I send my fondest aloha to you all.
in remembrance of 9/11,

Today is a day of reflection. My family and I are remembering those whose lives were lost on this day 5 years ago. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out for the families of those that perished on that dreadful day.
Let us not forget those first responders who survived that now face health problems and post traumatic stress issues. Their lives were forever changed not just that day but in the days following as well.
We pray daily for the men and women who fight each day for our independence. God Speed!

I received this in an e-mail and thought I'd print it here:
TWO THOUSAND ONE, NINE ELEVEN (2001-911)
Onw Two thousand one, nine eleven
Three thousand plus arrive in heaven
As they pass through the gate
Thousands more appear in wait
A bearded man with a stovepipe hat
Steps forward saying, "Let's sit, let's chat"
They settle down in seats of clouds
A man named Martin shouts out proud
"I have a dream!" and once he did
The Newcomer said, "Your dream still lives."
Groups of soldiers in blue and grey
Others in khaki, and green then say
"We're from Bull Run, Yorktown, the Maine"
The Newxomer said, "You died not in vain."
From a man on sticks one could hear
"The only thing we have to fear.
The Newxomer said, "We know the rest,
trust us sir, we've passed the test."
"Courage doesn't hide in caves
You can't buy freedom, in a grave,"
The Newcomers had heard this voice before
A distinct Yankee twang from Hyannisport shores
A silence fell within the mist
Somehow the Newcomer knew that this
Meant time had come for her to say
What was in the hearts of the three thousand plus that day
"Back on Earth, we wrote reports,
Watched our children play in sports
Worked our gardens, sang our songs
Went to church and clipped coupons
We smiled, we laughed, we cried, we fought
Unlike you, great we're not"
The tall man in the stovepipe hat
Stood and said, "Don't talk like that!
Look at your country, look and see
You died for freedom, just like me"
Then, before them all appeared a scene
Of rubbled streets and twisted beams
Death, destruction, smoke and dust
And peopleworking just 'cause they must
Hauling ash, lifting stones,
Knee deep in hell, but not alone
"Look! Blackman, Whiteman, Brownman, Yellowman
Side by side helping their fellow man!"
So said Martin, as he watched the scene
"Even from nightmares, can be born a dream."
Down below three fireman raised
The colors high into ashen haze
The soldiers above had seen it before
On Iwo Jima back in '45
The man on sticks studied every closely
Then shared his perceptions on what he saw mostly
"I see pain, I see tears,
I see sorrow----but I don't see fear"
You left behind husbands and wives
Daughters and sons and so many lives
are suffering now because of this wrong
But look very closly. You're really not gone.
All of those people, even those who've never met you
All of their lives, they'll never forget you
Don't you see what has happened?
Don't you see what you've done?
You've brought them together, together as one.
With that the man in the stovepipe hat said
"Take my hand," and from there he led
thress thousand plus heroes, Newcomers to heaven
On this day, thousand one, nine eleven.

1 Attachment(s) Hey everyone,
Yesterday I went to see World Trade Center, for me, that was the scariest movie I have ever seen. Mostly because unlike other movies, I know it's real. Today in class we watched footage from the news on 9/11/01. It reminded me of when I was 9 and watching the news on this day 5 years confused on why there were kids my age across the world celebrating this tragic event. What makes it worse is that today durring class some kids laughed at this horrific footage. I remeber 5 years ago, and will never forget.
My heart goes out to everyone who lost someone from this tragic incident.

'm sitting here watching CNN, remembering 9/11. When I put our flag our this morning I discovered that we're the only people flying the flag today which really ticks me off. I still have a very hard time watching the footage of the second plane hitting Tower II because that was the exact moment when the daughter of an old family friend died. Her name was Vanessa Lynn Kolpak and she was 21, she had just been hired for her first full time job at an investment firm. She was on the 81st floor of Tower II and was killed instantly. Her family had her declared dead because her remains were never found.
On the same day, I found out that a distant cousin of mine had died as well. His parents had been killed in a car wreck when he was very young which made him hypersensitive to tragedy. He was watching the coverage of the attacks, told his family he was going for a walk and went to the park. A few hours later, the police came to the door and told his family that some children had found him hanging from a tree in the park.
Needless to say, today is a very difficult day for me and my family. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who lost someone on that horrible day.

So sad is right. Now I'm crying. Nicole doesn't understand what happened on this day in 2001. She was almost 2 at the time. She came home from school today and was asking questions.

Without diverting the original intent of this thread, I worry about those children in Dee's class who could laugh at the footage of this horrific event. What should be done for these young people? What is happening to this world? It is truly a sign of a deep problem. I was a little girl when JFK was assassinated, yet I cried. I could grasp that something horrible had happened not only to this country but to a fellow human being. What have we lost here?

I won't ever forget this date, ever.
I won't forget the day so many lost their lives
I won't forget this day 5 years ago that America almost lost hope
I won't forget the day more tears were shed then I have ever seen
I won't forget the day so long ago that news was all that was broadcasted
I won't forget the day when mourning was all you could do
I won't forget how so many kids left school that day
I won't forget the way our country was left
I can't forget this date 5 long years ago, when our country changed, and so many lost their lives.
I remember....
I remember 5 years ago,
People covered in ash head to toe,
Mourning souls could be found,
The air was filled with one silent sound,
The sound of tears
That spread from face to face,
How could this happen,
What a mistake.
I remember being just one lost soul,
In this battle where tears and fears took a toll,
In the lives of many,
The lost, the found, and the missing,
Bitter souls found comfort hissing,
The lost words that no one could say,
Goodbye for one final time.
Bless the souls lost that day.
For we all know they have something to say,
The message they left us with that early morning,
There was a clear still message of warning,
Dont fear the future, fear the present,
Because that is far worse.
Follow you heart, smile often, and understand others.
Love your neighbor as a sister or brother,
But far more important,
Have your last message be not goodbye, but I love you.
I remember families in prayer,
Breathing in the smoky air,
Hoping that their loved ones would make it through,
Grasping to see a bit of the sky bright blue,
Thinking maybe thatd be a sign of hope,
Just another way to cope.
I cant forget this day five years ago,
That changed America in so many ways,
For the better or for the worse,
We dont know,
The message clearly written though,
America has amazing heroes
In many different colors, forms, shapes, and sizes.

Hope you enjoy.

It reminded me of the time the movie Schindler's List came out. Kids in schools were laughing at the movie as well. When Steven Spielburg heard about this he went on a tour of high schlools educating the kids on the holocost. Your right. What is happening to this world? What have we lost?

I was working in downtown Chicago just across the street from the Daley Center and City Hall. We heard the news. We had to wait for orders from the state (I am a state employee) when we were to evacuate if at all. Evacuate we did. What a sight. There were cops on horseback, on motorcycles, state troopers, cop cars everywhere. Some had riot gear on. No riots or panic took place. The streets were flooded with people presumeably going home as I did. I waited for the EL (elevated train) to take me to my car. My line came quickly. Found out later that the CTA threw away the day's schedule and sent all lines out. I got in the car and listened to the radio as I headed home. The music stations were delivering news feeds from various sources. I went home as was glued to the devestation I saw on t.v.
I did the logical thing. I went to my nearest blood bank to donate. I waited four hour in line. They couldnt take me. My temp registered what might have been to them a fever. It wasnt a fever. I ate fast food donated by the local McDonalds and nearbye pizzeria. My mouth was hot. I went home drank water and donated two hours later.
So did I forget such a day? I think not.

Thank you, Dee,
Though the anniversary was officially yesterday, your beautiful poem teaches us today that the remembrances and memories of "the souls lost" will go on forever. Thank you for honoring them this way.
I want to say also that I am working on a book proposal this morning. And since you're a writer, you know that sometimes it's hard to get down to where you need to be in order to write. Well, your poem inspires me this morning and it gives me hope. I read it and knew immediately that i would be able to go where I need to go today to write.
I am sorry about the insensitive kids around you who laughed. Sometimes that kind of thing comes out of "fear." Sometimes I think that some people in our culture have gotten so used to the violence that they've become desensitized and violence is very impersonal, and very distant from their realm of experience. At the same time, I remember very well when President Kennedy was shot and killed in 1963. My whole third grade class went into shock, some burst into tears. Later we learned that some people had actually applauded and laughed when they heard that the President had been assassinated. It's a struggle to stand up for the good when there is ignorance around you. But your poem illustrates that it can be done.
Dee, You are so beautiful and talented and wise beyond your years. We are all very lucky to have you in our midst.
