Cast Iron Cookware
Question:

Throw away all that Teflon junk and replace it with cast iron cookware.
Those old fashioned heavy black cast iron skillets and other cookware (like dutch ovens and griddles), when they're well seasoned, are the absolute best. No kitchen should be without them.
To clean: Rinse them out, pad dry, rub thoroughly with a little oil (I use olive oil) and store away. They will out live you and me.
And for heaven's sake, please toss any aluminum pots and pans straight into the trash.

Answers:

I love my cast-iron skillets!!! Unfortunately, I can only use them for baking at the moment as I have an electric stove. :( I had a great and well-seasoned pan that had to have had over 50+ years of seasoning on it (it was my grandmother's).. The electric stove caused a lot of it to come off.. It also screwed up the iron-skillet that I'd been seasoning since I was a freshman in college (my neighbor was a chef and turned me onto cast-iron)...

Answers:

Cast Iron skillets are heavy, making them a tad hard to use for people with PA in their hands.
That said, they do make for a great weapon..lol... :p

Why is this in the psoriasis forum?

Answers:

Did you know that every year 4 million americans are hit in the head with skillets?
Some are acts of violence, others the result of horseplay.. A shame, really...

Answers:

well maybe don't toss all of them!!! :D
But yes! teflon coated and aluminum for sure!
I have a large set of Revere ware that was a wedding gift 56 years ago Oct 14th. Through the years I also added some cast iron....one was an, at least 15 in. skillet, that I bought at a railroad salvage years ago! It was so handy I started using it for much of my cooking!
My DH and I went through a Wellness Clinic that opened up in a town near us
(this was a while ago.... pre psoriasis) and they ran every kind of test you could think of and employed health care providers in many fields......when I saw the nutritionist he showed (and gave me a sheet of paper with my results) the iron level was sky-high so then we went through the procedure of what vitamins did I take? what kind of water did I drink? etc. I assured him I did not take iron supplements nor did my vitamins have iron in them....he sat there not believing me, I could tell from his attitude! But I knew enough about taking iron that I made sure it was not in any supplements I took! We need iron in our blood for many functions but we also need a happy medium!
Why is this in the psoriasis forum?
Because it has to do with what's good for us and some of us like to try to get as healthy as possible to help fight psoriasis.
Where else could it be since everything is dumped together.

Then why not include car care? An improperly managed car can be dangerous for our health too.

what and how you eat, how you behave, and even down to what you cook with does make a difference for you skin.
And it is true that cast iron cookware does make a good weapon but using a gun still wins.
I see a lot of posts about people and their injections... How you cook, or deliver your food for some of us is just as important.
I think more of us should really try to live better. even if we do just a little bit it does make a difference.

Thanks Granny. You hit the nail right on the head.

is that even if you are one conventional meds, living better, which includes cooking, can make these medicines even more effective.
Lets say your obsese and got PA real bad and get a biologic and it works ok.
Now, lets say that you make some good food and volume choices and overtime you loose say 60lbs. I dare to bet that your pa will be doing a ton better and most likely so will the rest of you including the skin.
Is it time for the health department to inspect your kitchen?

When I read the original post, it made no mention or reference to psoriasis. Usually those go in conversations, but you already know that. ;)
Anyway, welcome back. I knew you would miss us! :)

Granny where were you...? broken computer? hope you got your new hard drive!
remember back in the old days.... couple months ago? when we could talk health? in PEACE! (well sometimes).....everything practically includes P when it comes to our comfort zone or foods that we eat and even how we prepare them....heck even the kind of sheets we use on our beds could be discussed when it comes to P....I don't like hard, scratchy sheets..... :D
and I would never use aluminum pans :p

Answers:

Its been said that teflon cookware is safe provided it goes no more than a medium hi heat. In this case the heat is absorbed by the food and no toxins reaches the air. It should never be used as a way of sauteing or searing meats (or mushrooms and tofu for you vegans). That task should be left to stainless steel (for sauteing and searing) and cast iron (for searing only. Its too heavy for sauteing). Unless I an be convinced to the contrary, I'll continue to fry eggs and pancakes on teflon.
Now I gotta know. What about stanless steel or anodized aluminum cookware? Anyone got an objection to those? I'm all eyes.

If the car care issue effects your health, which effects your P/PA, why not? Or is this just for the sake of starting a argument? If so, it dont belong anywhere on these boards.

I don't use mine as often as I used to...in fact I quit for a long time....
some things are good baked in the oven in cast iron pot...like baked beans!
But there's nothing like Revere ware! stainless steel!
I remember my daddy making corn bread in that cast iron to go with those baked beans. He was ahead of his time. Everytime I think of cast iron, I think of my dad. He would have been 96 this past june.
