bifocals, Can you See me Now?
Question:

Hi everyone! New here. I have a Q about glasses. How difficult is it to adjust to bifocals? My eye dr strongly recommended that I get them. I've been letting my glasses slide down to the tip of my nose so I can peer out over them. Dr. said this made me look "dowdy". Couldn't bring myself to tell him that looking "dowdy" was the least of my concerns considering I have small patches of p from head to toe. (Wondered what he would have said about that, I was wearing long sleeve shirt & pants in the middle of summer). Anyway, is it difficult to adjust to bifocals???

Answers:

It was easy for me,,,,just put them on and wear them. After you get them, wait until you get home to start,,,,,they seem strange at first.

Answers:

thanks Granny. the guy at the frame shop said it would be easy to get used to them but I didn't know if he was just saying that to make a sell. They looked like they would just make me dizzy, I don't need any help in that department!

Answers:

No problems in getting used to bifocals....except the first couple of times you step down - stairs or even off the curb- you may get a little depth perception problem.....other than that, you should have no problems.....they're really very instinctive
On the other hand.....tri-focals take a little more getting used to.....but in a day or two, no problems
have fun seeing once again.

I am either reading/onthe computer, or our driving/walking/playing, so instead of getting bifoucals where half of everything is out of whack, I got two pairs of glasses, one for reading, and one for not reading.
This lets them make the reading glasses exactly fit the distance I normal read from, and means I always have my full field of vision in focus.
I get lenses every year, and frames every other year. I get the same frames for both, and swap my "normal" lenses into the best set of frames each year.
I prefer this to bifocals.

It does take some getting used to but persevere! :)
If you are getting the kind that have NO visible lines between them it will take some getting used to. They made my son dizzy and he took them back as he could not handle them.
I myself use trifocals using the middle part for the computer and looking on the grocery shelves. I did have a pair made just for reading in the middle of the night with a single vision so I would not have them slipping around.

Thanks Jeff, never heard of trifocals. I'm already having a problem with depth perception, especially if I'm real tired. Stairs & curbs too sometimes but I think that's b/c I can be kind of spastic sometimes. :D I just wish glasses weren't so expensive, and I don't understand why they are, it's just plastic. They're all expensive, the frames, the lenses, and then the price almost doubles when you go into the bifocals. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up about the stairs & curbs. (I guess that would be a heads-down if I'm watching where I step, huh?)

Thanks Dennis, Rich, & Juanita, My eyesight is too bad for me to do what Dennis is doing by swapping them out. But, I do save my frames and put the lenses in the best ones each year (or whenever). It's the only feasible thing to do.
I think the ones without the line are more expensive, but they look better. I've never heard of trifocals, but that makes sense, I understand needing that middle part. Anyway, thank you all!!!

Answers:

Just go down the steps as you normally would. Wear them around the house at first,,,where you are familiar with things. Don't,,,deliberately look through the bifocal part. You will adjust.
I just spent $500.00 on my new ones. I got the transitional lens for sun protection.

I wear the progressive lenses- some times called no line bifocals- a more gradual shift in the focus- when I wear contacts I wear one lens that corrects reading and one for distance - I know it sounds strange but it works because your brain puts it all together!!!
Good luck!!!

Answers:

I'm familiar with the contact lenses, my sister has those. It does sound strange, but she has never had a problem with hers. My last pair of contacts bothered me so much that I haven't had any for the past few years. I may try them again. I think it was the progressive lenses that I was looking at (no pun). The price of glasses is absolutely ridiculous. Granny, I don't think I can afford the transitional lens if that's how much it's going to be! I did learn that it is possible to scratch the scratch resistant lenses. Don't ask, just don't ask...

Answers:

I found it easy. The contacts were not easy to adjust to.

Answers:

Yes I've scratched the scratch resistant lenses too-
I have now discovered I can only wear contacts made of certian materials- since all the companies are moving to newer types of lenses I have to get trials on any new type, and they have discontinuse the ones I used to wear- that always happens to me!!!

What kind can you wear? And, why can't you wear other kinds? Is it an allergic reaction? I'm wondering if this is why I had such a difficult time with my last pair. Maybe I need to try a different material. Thank you for posting that, that's something I need to research. I'm glad I'm not the only one that scratches my glasses! They're too expensive to be getting scratched, but if you wear them everyday...it happens! :)

Answers:

I can only seem to wear the ones made of "polymacon" like Bausch and Lomb soflens- the others actually hurt to wear while not a traditional allergy it is a sensitivity to whatever they are made of. Any questions feel free to PM me

Polkadot- did you find a type that worked for you?

Answers:

Polkadot,
All eye doctors, I ain't even going to try to spell optomistrist, have frames left over from last year that they sell for about 1/2 price. Sometimes they mention them, most times, you have to ask.
I have always wondered who can tell if you frames were "last years" style anyway.
I use the flexon frames that you can tie ni a knot, very expensive, but I think worth it. They don't normaly get bent or need adjustment, and if you get hit in the head by a basketball, or the airbags in your car goes off, they do not scratch your face.

Answers:

Dennis, how on earth can you tie your glasses in a knot!!! ???
Have you ever tried progessives? If they are fitted correctly, EVERYTHING will be in focus, and I mean everything! The key is to get them fitted properly - if they are, there is no 'having to get used to them'. You will see everything perfectly right away. And once you wear them, you'll never go back :)

Answers:

These are thr frames I have. You can tie the temple piece into a half knot.

Are they delicate? I'm a little rough on my glasses - sat on them a few weeks ago and had to get them adjusted because I could hardly get them on! I wonder if Kaiser has these? I need a new pair soon.
