Take it out back with your 12 guage and buy a her a new one.....
just kidding and (maybe not)....reboot with the reboot cd's, thats what I would do. You do lose everything you've saved but hopefully you come out of it with clean fast pc machine.

Brad,
I like the first solution. LOL!
I will try the restore cd and see if it works.
thanks so much,

Hi Rich:
Sounds like you picked up some adware. This stuff can be nasty to next to impossible to get rid of. Most of the time you end up having to rebuild (restore cd) the computer. McAfee is for viruses, you also need some adware/spyware protection. Once your pc is restored, try installing Microsofts Defender, it is free and works very well, this should be installed along with the McAfee. Here is a link to MS Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/sec...re/default.mspx.
I am responsible for the desktop computers at a law firm, we run into alot of adware issues, rebuilding the pc and then adding back on virus and adware protection is your best bet.

Lillian,
Thanks so much. We will do that. Rich and I both know a little about computers but we are still learning.

1. start the computer in safe mode. to do that you have to hit the F8 key while it's starting to boot. it'll come up with a startup menu. choose safe mode with networking. then hit enter.
2. while in safe mode, run both adaware and spybot. if you don't have them, you can get them on the internet. make sure that you update the definitions files for both of them before you run them. They should take care of the spyware.
3. then run your virus scan.
4. if those two things don't work, pm me with the rest of the symptoms

Jeff,
I did all of that. I had to use the restore cd. then put in the virus protecter and the spyware and spybot. I did run the scans on them after i did this. everything was ok. I think the screen is what is messed up now. We brought the computer upstairs and it didn't do it on this screen. The screen menu keeps popping up on the screen. I can't get it to stop.

Jeff,
It's the menu on the screen. It's what changes the contrast and color on your screen. It keeps popping up on the screen without even pushing the menu button on the screen. It is the screen because we brought the computer upstairs and hooked it to our screen and it doesn't happen. If there's anyway to fix this can you give Rich a call.

I say it's either the video card or the monitor. I am willing to bet it's the monitor. One easy way to find out if it's the monitor is, if you have another monitor, try that monitor. If you have no more pop up with the menue thats it. On the other hand if you still have the same issue with another monitor on that computer, I would say it's a toss up between a video card driver or the video card itself. But, I would find out the name of you're video card MFG. and get an updated video card driver. And if you're not sure about what type of videocard you have, download this free App. as it will give you a host of information about whats inside you're computer. Good luck. Here is the link. That is what I did. It didn't do it on our monitor. I guess it's time to go shopping for a new one. I'm just thankfull that it's just the monitor and not the computer.
Thanks Shadow,
