Question:
Hi
Gee, of all things I just found out I have shingles on my neck! I had tender spots and kind of sore spots on my neck for about 2 weeks, then last week I started get a rash there. At first I thought it might be a kind of p, but as it went on for a few days, I wasn't sure what it was. The Doctors said shingles this morning and is putting me on a 7 day antibiotic pack. Also need to keep it covered.
I'm really concerned as I have taken care of baby Kya several times this week and last week. I told my daughter to call her peditrican to see what to be on the lookout for. I think it's usually okay till the baby is 6 months old, Kya is 4 months old, plus I don't think she can get shingles, but could get chicken pox.
It sure is itchy and sore.
Sandy
Please PM me if you would like information. Shingles is a side-effect of a weakened immune system which can come from many things. It is a side effect of chemo(mtx) and Biologics. It usually strikes older folks but young folks can get it too.
I now how what is a dangerous form... but I'm working through it.
Hello Sandy and Lori!
Sorry to hear you both have this! My younger sister (51) just got diagnosed with it a couple of weeks ago. I am the one with P and PA and when she started itching (on one leg) she developed what looked like a rash and a "burn". She was actually afraid SHE might be starting to get P so she went right to her doctor. She was totally shocked when he told her it was shingles. Our mom died at the end of March and since then we have both been going non-stop. Her doctor told her it most likely surfaced from stress and being run down. I know someone who has already had chicken pox is alright but if you haven't you CAN catch the chicken pox virus.
Hope you're both feeling well soon!
Nancy

Sandy and Lori,
Sorry to hear that you have shingles too. How do they treat this while on the other psoriasis medications?
Sandy and Lori
YIKES!!! As if you needed another thing..... I hope you are both feeling better soon!
Sandy - the upside for baby Kya, IF (big, huge, if there) she gets the Pox - then she won't recall it. The downside would be - she won't have a reason to miss school when all her friends get it. :D (I realize this is not something you probably feel like joking about..... but I am in to good of a mood to not be this positive.)
Just saw this in our paper today.
WASHINGTON -- A new vaccine has won federal approval to prevent the often painful infection known as shingles.
Drug giant Merck says the vaccine called Zostavax has been given the OK by the Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine is only for adults who previously have had chickenpox.
Shingles, also called herpes zoster, strikes when the chicken pox virus reactivates and resumes reproducing after lying dormant for decades in nerve cells in the body.
There are roughly 1 million new cases of shingles each year in the U.S. It typically affects the elderly, though anyone with a weakened immune system is vulnerable.
Merck research showed the vaccine reduced the incidence of shingles by half and pain and discomfort by nearly two-thirds.
The vaccine's long-term effectiveness remains unclear. Merck has shown that it works for at least four years, and plans to track patients for a decade.

Geeze, Sandy!! You just can't get a break recently!! :( We seem to have several members in the same situation. I guess none of us should ask "what next?" I hope you and Lori, and Katie, and all the others with such continuing struggles get through them, and feel better soon. Good thoughts coming to all of you.
Sandy , I hope you feel better soon. Trace
Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for all your well wishes. I surely appriciate them!
I thought I was being put on antibiotics, but it's really an anti-viral medication called Famvir. I have to take 3 a day for 7 days. I think it might be making a small difference.
I've been putting a couple of large bandage pads on them to cover them up, and I've also put benadrly cream on them to stop the itching more. Last night I took a bendadly pill. I've got oxycondone in the house for my pa and the docotr told me to take them when I need to for the pain.
Deb call little Kya's Doctor and let her know and her doctor didn't seem to awfully concern, other than to not let Kya get up against my neck. I'm being very careful.
Last night I felt foolish, as I was trying to find something to cover my neck with when I went to sleep and the bandages and guaze pads are uncomfortable, so I finally found a tea towel (dish cloth) and wrapped it around my neck and fastened it with a diaper pin!! When Don saw me this morning he looked as if to say---What did I marry almost 40 years ago!! LOL
Thanks again,
Sandy
