Question:
Pancreatitis in dogs
My BIL and a friend lost their dogs recently with this. One was a black lab and the other a Cocker Spaniel. They spent tons of money one these dogs but lost them anyway. Now, they have new dogs and are doing the same things again,,,,,,,every time they go out to eat, they bring their dogs treats,,,,,,,,,McNuggets, Fries, all kinds of people foods.
Both their vets said this was the cause of Pancreatitis.
We had a big dog that lived to be 15 and died of a stroke caused by the Fourth of July noise. His snacks were carrots sticks, cherry tomatoes, apple and doggie treats.
If you love your pets and feed them according to what they should have. Just like people food should be fuel for their bodies,,,,not junk becuase it taste good.
Causes
Multiple factors can contribute to the development of pancreatitis. Certain medications, infections; metabolic disorders including hyperlipidemia (high amounts of lipid in the blood) and hypercalcemia (high amounts of calcium in the blood); and trauma and shock can be associated with the development of pancreatitis. Middle-aged dogs appear to be at increased risk of developing pancreatitis; as a breed, Schnauzers and Yorkshire Terriers appear to be more prone to pancreatitis. Nutrition also plays a role. Dogs with diets high in fat, or dogs who 'steal' or are fed greasy 'people food' seem to have a high incidence of the disease.

Poor poochies.
I agree no fast food. That's bordering on abuse. I know it's hard to resist those cute doggie eyes....
I'm puppysitting this weekend for my daughter, what a challange. :p Her name is Betty, but we are calling her " Bitey " she needs to learn some manners. She's already in puppy school, so I'm almost at wits end here! We've had the Animal Planet channel on all weekend to learn some tips, better than spanking her. I don't believe in hitting animals, children or anyone for that matter. Here is one trick that were using that a friend of ours gave us, we put pennies in an empty can and shake it when she tries to do a nip and run. So far so good. Maybe I can find a better idea, I don't want her having a stroke.
She's on a special diet right now due to a virus or it could be the pen that she ate the other day while with my daughter, she spent a lot of her hard earned money at the vet! ...everytime I turn around she has something in her mouth ( I pulled a push pin out the other day )...I take her outdoors and she's eating sticks, rocks, acorns anything she can get ahold of.
Dogs, well, they will eat anything. Humans, we should know better.
Karen
p.s Granny, my dog Odie who we had for 15 years, absolutely hated firecrackers, thunderstorms etc, I'm sorry you lost your dog, they are really members of our family. Odie use to love carrots as well, you brought back a sweet memory for me. thanks. :)

It sounds like an anonymous call to the ASPCA is in order.

But what about the PEOPLE? Millions of people are doing the same thing. Who do you call to report them? Lots of people are feeding their children the same way. Isn't that child abuse?
I have 2 sisters with diabetes,,,,,,you should see what they eat. One is 74 and the other just turned 60.
I would call the ASPCA because people food can be fatal to pets.
I personally don't eat fast food. (I can't remember the last time that I had anything more then a cup of coffee at a fast food restaurant.) Unfortunately, as you said, millions of people don't agree with us. Unfortunately, calling the authorities (here in New Jersey it would be the Division of Youth and Family Services) probably wouldn't even launch an investigation, because the children are being fed. (Who knows what they're being fed, but they're being fed. :( )
Education is the only way to turn things around in the fast food generation.

When I was in the 5th grade, we had a dog named Butch.
Butch wasn't allowed to eat fast food, but if we weren't careful with ours, he'd try to sneak some.
One time my father brought home a cheeseburger from Sonic.
He wasn't thinking and left the burger on the coffee table while he went to the kitchen to get something.
When he came back, the burger was gone and only a pickle remained. Butch hated pickles.
He lived to the ripe 'ole age of 16.
But what about the PEOPLE? Millions of people are doing the same thing. Who do you call to report them? Lots of people are feeding their children the same way. Isn't that child abuse?

I would call if people were feeding dog food to their children. Or if someone was hitting/beating their dog or child.
We never had that type of food at our private school that I worked at, I would say 90% of the children brought healthy lunches and we provided the healthy snacks. ( the dean/director of the school was a vegan )...

p.s. Loved the story about Butch..no pickles!? :p
julio,,,an occasional treat is not that bad but these people fed their dogs this stuff every time they went out and they eat out a lot. The vets say they are seeing more of this problem.
Ouchyk, no doubt kids that go to a privte school get better food than those in public schools.
And it's the parents feeding kids most of the time. Our fast food restaurants are very busy between 5-7 PM,,,ever look at the drive -up windows,,,,hurried parents grabbing something for dinner on their way home.
