Question:

I got up this morning and was in the process of making a cup of coffee, putting the news on the tv and glancing over the front page of the newspaper. Looked down on the floor and noticed one of those small silica packets ( the kind that come in small electronic gadgets and new show boxes) had been ripped open by my pair of three month old kittens. The packet had been chewed open and the contents were no where to be found.
Oh great, kitten poisoning! Called vet, line busy. Panic sets in. Kittens are running around like normal and biting my toes.
Went running to computor and lookd up silica +poisoning. Way too much info with too little time. Till I spied the number for poison control. 1-800-222-1222.
Called and talked to a very nice woman who asked what happened. Now remember, I haven't had my cup of coffee yet. So I tell her I think Lizzy ate some silica. The woman assures me that silica is non-toxic ( she has to repeat this about four times, cause I'm asking "Are you sure", every other second).
To end the conversation, she has to take my name , # and zip. Then she asks how old Lizzy is and how much SHE weighs. I answer without a second thought, Lizzy is 3 months old, weighs about 4-5 pounds and is actually a male. I explain we couldn't figure out the sex in the beginning and just left the name.
The is silence on the other end.
Finally it hits me..." He's a kitten".
P.S. I asked her why if silica is non-toxic they put the warning DO NOT EAT on the package. She told me they don't want you pouring it into a bowl and eating it like cereal. LOL

First let me say that I'm glad Lizzy is okay.
But you have me crackin up. I'm so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I was reading your story. Meeting you in DC, I can picture you telling this story and it had me rolling!!! That woman must have thought you were absolutely NUTS!!! I can only imagine...
And I agree, why do they put that on there if it won't harm you? Isn't that like false advertising?!?!

I've always wondered what would happen if my cats accidentally found one. I was always nuts when I found one in a package, dealing with it like it was toxic waste. Boy do I feel foolish, lmao!!!!!

Don't feel foolish....keep on protecting the babies. I"ve kept an eye on the kittens all day to make sure they weren't affected.
These little 'twins' I have get into eveything! I thought I'd 'child-proofed' the house!
That number I gave in my first post is so important to anyone with babies, toddlers or animals in the house.

Your silly. But you know, I am the same way. I would have totally freked on the phone. But to you and I, even animals ARE our kids. I am glad your kitties are going to be ok.
