Hi Mike, and welcome to my nightmare or what used to be my nightmare. I am a registered nurse and I have p on my palms. I have been treated with Methotrexate and Enbrel and right now I am pleased to say I have weaned off the MTX and in a few weeks I will be off the Enbrel and I will just wait and see how long I can keep this clearing going.
As a medical professional you must wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs and use gloves as part of the barrier precautions you need to take. It does take a toll on your p though and what I do right after I wash my hands is mositurize. I keep a tube of Neutrogena hand cream or Cutemol hand cream in my pocket. I never noticed the difference between latex or vinyl gloves but I do know that powder in the gloves irritated my p. We do not use powder in our gloves anymore so that is no longer an issue. As long as I moisturize I notice less cracking. Cracking can still occur and I know many use superglue or liquid bandaid to help close the cracks. It never helped me. I just found the less on my hands the better I was.
Good luck in your treatment, for whatever you choose and keep us informed on how you are doing.
Hi Mike,
I am also in the dental field- 30 + years- only the last 8 or so with P. I also have it on my hands- I have pustular Psoriasis limited to my hands and one foot- My first sugestion is to change to non latex gloves because the constant exposure of the open skin to the latex protiens can lead to developing a latex sensitivity. I also use non powdered gloves since the powder dries the skin out more. I keep tubes of cream in every operatory and try to use it often. When the skin is cracked or open or bleeding I bandage using "flexible fabric" bandages or a product called gauze tape or gauzetex- it is a tape that only sticks to itself, not the skin. I use a non irritating soap to wash and wear gloves when doing lab work because the plaster and stone is so irritating and drying. Feel free to PM me with any questions. I've gotten pretty good at dealing with this.
