Good e-mail about Grandma's Cures
Question:

But personally I think some of this is worth a shot. I will say here too that I always like to check things like this on Urban Legend websites and did not find this e-mail yet. Enjoy :-)
GRANDMA'S CURES
Keep this on the Fridge
Did You Know That? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."
Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.
Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.
Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly -- even though the product was never been advertised for this use.
Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
Hunt's tomato paste boil cure...cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic.
Heinz vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.
Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Rich,
Don't you just hate that? I have ink it's just it's doing something weird. I tried to fix it but no luck yet. It's only about a year old. I'm about to throw it against the wall. Ugh!!!
Polly

Answers:

Polly maybe I can help....first never leave your printer on....once you have used it....shut it down.........it goes in to "rest mode" so that the ink doesn't get dried out on the working parts......
this is what I do when mine starts acting weird
Go to "utilities" and do a 'head cleaning' this is found under "properties ususally ....(I have an Epson) there is a tab that says UTILITIES click on that and put enough cheap paper to clean (I keep turning one sheet til I use all four sides) you might have to do this a number of times which is using a lot of ink but its the only way to get it unclogged one time I did it like 20 times....that taught me never to leave the printer on....I use to leave it on all the time....cause I used it so much when I was doing art shows.....but it is not good for it, too drying.
Hope this gets it back in working shape..... :D

Remember whiskey for a toothache,,,and a dab for teething,,,lol

Did you guys actually read that? Now I'm no doctor but I would just use common sence to know NOT to put toothpaste on a burn. Toothpaste is the strongest soap around and it will irritate the heck out of a burn. Jessus, that's like some sort of torture. That's like saying put drano on a toothache.
Again, I'm not a scientist, but, I really don't think vinegar or honey kills bacteria. Ever hear of anti-abiotics? I can think of one thing vinegar and honey is good for cleaning and it's not pimples. Honey on pimples? How about hot soapy water? Talk about clogging your pours. Oh and FYI, Formula 409 does not kill scorpians, (I've tried), Most other bugs just swim out of the stuff and walk away too. Try stepping on them with your boots on. Speaking of bugs. Fleas, no, Dawn does not kill fleas. I know, I have 4 cats. Fleas don't die. They just jump around and bite you. No type of acid is gonna soothe any pain ever. Do not put tomatoe sauce on you cuts. This sounds like some barbaric type of child abuse. Or you could put listerin on your childs broken blisters! Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. (being extreamly sarcastic). Oh my God. I'm just gonna go drink some more slippery elm. At least I think that won't BURN me.

Hi pretty,,,,,,
I don't think I have welcomed you,,,,glad you found us.
Surely everyone has enough common sense to pick and choose what they try.
I don't think some of these things should be tried but honey is good for lots of things. I make our cough medicine to this day. Honey and lemon juice or a vinegar makes a good cough medicine without chemicals.
My Grandma lived with us and she used all kinds of things to treat our cuts and scrapes. I was born in 1939,,,,,,,,,,,,way out in the country. We could not run to the doctor for every little thing.
Grandma took care of sore throats, congestion, cuts and scrapes, diarrhea, constipation, upset tummies, poison ivy or oak.
There were 10 children in our family and we all grew up nice and healthy. We range from 74 to 50 now. Some of the babies were born at home, including me. Grandma was always there. My mom never had a miscarriage and all the babies were healthy.
I can remember when I was about 4 years old. I stepped on a rusty nail. Grandma washed the place with kerosene and put her handy-dandy home made salve on it. She changed it twice a day. I never got and infection and it didn't leave a scar.
Yes, I can remember "back that far",,,I can remember when I was 2 and Momma had a new baby! I kept thinking---when I saw her holding that baby that she was in my place,,,,,in momma's arms.
So, there are some good things out there but one has to be sensible.

Hello again Pretty.....I answered you in psoriasis forum the other day!
Like granny said we have to pick and choose what health hints we decide to try....using common sense of course.....as for using vinegar?....well it has been shown to do all the claims for it and more....read here for more handy tips :p
http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/home/164
toothpaste? never fluoride based toothpastes for me or my family nor do we drink city water with fluoride added....it is sodium fluoride....a RAT POISON!
ever read the back of the fluoride toothpastes warning?
WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN...under 6 years of age.
If more than used for brushing is accidently swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control center right away.(EVER WONDER WHY?)
I don't think Listerine was recommended for childrens' blisters but was suggested for people with fungus under their nails! it is an antiseptic....used for gargling away germs...perhaps it will help toenail fungus....I would try that before a prescription drug that might have side effects!
Remember to always check things out that you may be concerned about....google.com is a good place to start....and using common sense of course.

handy tip for pets:
if you are reluctant to use flea collars and commercial dips, because they are not good for the animals health...try this all natural trick.....
fleas and ticks hate the smell of vinegar....you can keep these pests off your pets by spraying them with a solution of vinegar and warm water...it's safe and cheap.

Answers:

Welcome pretty,,,,,here's how I judge things,,,Granmas ideas are still far better than the different types of drugs and steroids...just about all those solutions do work,,,409 did kill spiders,,,I was in Texas at my sisters and sprayed them and yes dead....... we sprayed her dog with the vineger and yes the fleas died,,,and no bugs went near her dog......we sprayed a bees nest with the 409 and yes the bees dropped and died and no bees went near that nest,,,,,,listerine for the fungus yes it work ,,my sister used it on her toe,,,,so i always try home remedies our parents say..... there is a black salve that my mom & dad use to put on a boil,,,cover it and it came to a head and busted and never got infected,,, there were leaves in the grass when you rubbed them it made a green liquid,,,that was used for poison ivy and poison oak,,,,we didn't go to a Dr. and get a shot and steroids,,,,and it dryed up and went away.... I feel safe with granmas ideas!!!! good luck...

I just posted that e-mail for fun really. Someone saw it in a different forum and asked me to post it here. I never said it was gospel. I just think with the expensive medications there are out there, it might be nice to see something that might work that you have lying around your house, and if it doesn't, then what have you lost? That's my opinion. Sorry if you don't like it. I thought it was cute.

in WWII, when the medics ran out of antibiotics, they packed wounds with sage. Honey DOES have antibiotic properties, look it up.
Wonder what kind of profits the Body Shop are making these days? All organic cosmetics; started as a real small business. Guess if herbs didn't work, people would stop buying them, huh? Especially since modern technology, medicine & drugs are all so safe.

Answers:

I never had a grandma. And my mother was...well, whatever. Don't beat me up. I was just saying that those particular home remedies seamed kinda like a joke. I'm the first in line for some mint tea to settle my stomach. But I just couldn't see putting acid on a burn or a cut or a boil or whatever it said. I'm not talking about this anymore.
