Autoimmune Diseases in Family members
Question:

My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last May which is also an autoimmune disorder.
He had an allergic reaction to the MMR vaccine.
I have psoriasis, PA, Rhumatoid Arthritis.
My grandfather had RA.
Noone else in my family that I know of has any other autoimmune disorder...
Do you all have autoimmune diseases in your immediate family? Does anyone know if there is some genetic connection?

Answers:

I'm betting there is, but dont quote me. I have P and PA. My 16 year old daughter has Fibromyalgia and tons of allergies. My 15 year old has P. My niece has Lupus and her brother has P. So go figure.

Answers:

my mom has p, my g'pa has p, and one of my sisters has p. the same g'pa has diabites. and my other g'pa has diabities. so i guess it kinda is all mixed around.

There's definitely a tie-in with all the immune system diseases, although it hasn't been pinpointed yet. I'm one of the oddballs that can't find any ties in my family members. It must be because I'm actually an adopted princess from a royal family, and they're afraid to tell me. :p  :D

My family history is pretty strong. My mother has lupus. My father has P and PA (though never formally diagnosed, I will give anybody a months pay who proves me wrong). I have a sister with fibromyalgia (which I also have)--though not an "autoimmune disease" it tags along with autoimmune diseases a lot. My grandfather had gout and several of his sisters had "gout". Be nice to know what they really had. I had one aunt with adult onset diabetes. My maternal grandma had migraines, as did a paternal aunt. I mention migraines cause I think they go along with some of these things possibly. I also have a strong history of endometriosis--all of my sisters and I-- which some people think has an autoimmune component.
There is a great book called the Autoimmune Connection with chapters about many of autoimmune diseases and their relationships to each other.
Good post, we should keep track of this stuff.
