Let's all welcome, Goldyloxs13
Question:

Hi Everyone,
Goldyloxs13 introduced herself to us in another thread. She's got some questions for those of us who've been to the an NPF Conference. I figured that she'd get a better response if a copy of her post was in a separate thread.
Sorry that you can't make it Steve sounds like you had one heck of a crash.
I have never posted before so I am not sure what the heck I am doing anyway hello to whoever reads this. (newbie me)
Just wanted to know how educational informative etc.. these conferences are? I guess being pretty new to this whole (actually talking to people about P) and being it sounds like you all have participated before. Just wanted to know what you have gotten out of attending.
Thanks to any comments in advance. Source: .
Thanks, everyone!
Mike

Hi Goldyloxs13,
Once again, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the Board! Nice to meet you. I hope that this is the first of many posts. :)
I went to the conference in San Diego last year (2004). I was diagnosed with psoriasis way back in 1964. I thought that I knew everything that there was to know about this disease and that I would use to conference as an excuse to see San Diego. Boy was I wrong! I learned something new in just about every session that I went to. More important, I got to interact with dozens of people who dealing with the same issues as me. It was actually a very moving experience. (More then a few people actually broke down in tears -- sometimes in the middle of a session and sometimes in the middle of a fancy hotel lobby -- because they were so overwhelmed by the idea of meeting people who were just like them.)
I had been posting here for a very long time before I arrived in San Diego. So I knew a lot of people. Even though most of use had never met in person. Everyone was wearing name tags, so, more then once, I would run into someone -- in, say an elevator -- an simultaneously exclaim. "You're [insert screen name here] from the message board. That made the whole experience extra special, but regardless of whether you are a newbie or have been here for a long time -- I highly recommend that you come to Boston if you're able to do so.
Here's a link to a pdf copy of the brochure for the conference: .
I hope this helps and I hope to see you in Boston!
Once again, welcome to the Board. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know you better.
Mike

Hi Goldyloxs13,
Welcome! I have never been to a psoriasis conference before, however heard many positives about them and am so psyched its right in my back yard this year.
I'm sure this is the first of many more to come for me, unless of course we find a cure :D !!
Take care,
Karen
p.s. I'm switching name tags with someone lol ;)

what have i gotten out of it?
oomg!!! where do i BEGIN!?? as you can see, i cant hold in my excitment. Last year (san diego) was my first conference. Until then, i've not spoken about my P/PA to anyone else besides my family. (i've had it since i was 12)
it was literally a WHIRLWIND!! I signed up for this site in JULY, and 2 weeks later met 2 wonderful women for coffee (jodes and di), 2 weeks after that, di and i were in a car driving from the bay area to san diego (a 9 hour car ride)
i couldnt believe what i saw, everyone had different degrees of p/pa, but everyone was sooo open!! I got to spend time with people i BARELY just met on this message board and they were all WONDERFUL! For the first time in a long time, i didnt have to hide my arms, or try to walk normally (i have joint damage on my ankles and it makes me limp) i was just MYSELF!!
I took so much empowerment, when i returned home, Jodes and Di were starting the bay area p/pa support group and i jumped right on in to help them (im now a co-assistant leader.. wooo hooo) I learned more in that weekend (and from being on these boards) then i did in my entire history of going to doctors. I made sooo many awesome friends and i simply can not WAIT to see my old friends as well as meet new ones (*wink wink*ash and erin)
i always preach to everyone to TRY and make it, it literally changed my life. if you look at me now vs 1 year ago, you wouldn't see the same person.
