A Question for the Married Ladies
Question:

What have you done with your wedding gown or dress? Since I have been confined to the first floor my DH has decided to redo our bedroom upstairs. When I'm able to go back upstairs I will be cleaning out the closet in our room. We still have boxes of clothes that never got unpacked after our move 5 years ago and in one of those boxes is the dress I wore for our wedding. I know my daughter will never wear it, since it's pink her least favorite color. I'll never fit into it again, so what should I do with it. Anyway, I got to wondering today what other people have done with their dresses?
Just wondering,
Paige

Answers:

I still have mine in the plastic from the dry cleaners. Since this is both me & my dh's 2nd marriage, I bought a bridesmaid dress. Anyway, you could always give it to a Goodwill shop, or you could place an ad in a newspaper and sell it.

I did not have a big wedding with all the trims--I wore a suit. It is in my cedar chest. I think I will leave it for someone else to deal with.

I like that idea Granny. We didn't have a big wedding either. Just a small affair with the reception on the back porch of the house we had bought. Boy, was my new mother in law dissappointed, she couldn't invite every person she had ever known! She kept offering to pay for the entire day if we would only do it her way. We stuck to our plan and at the end of the day she came to us and told us that she was glad we'd done it our way. The day was a lot of fun. Anyway, I don't have a cedar chest so a moving box will have to surfice. I'm still not really decided so if you have any other ideas out there, let's hear them!
Thanks in advance for you ideas!

Hi there Paige, the first thing I would say is dont get rid of it. I got married 8 years ago and had a barn dance in the evening which everyone loved but with people treading on my dress and swirling around it got pretty battered - now I love to look at the footprints and the tears and remember the wonderful memories of that day. I have my dress hanging in a plastic bag but I do know that you can go to a dry cleaners and ask them to clean it and wrap and pack it for you in a box using non acidic paper so it would be safe for years.

I think donating to a charity place would help someone that can't afford a gown,,or put an add,,,free gown,,,,there are some girls that really can't afford something so special....
I also had a cousin that had her gown made into a skirt for the bassent for her baby,,,and that can be passed down....or maybe cut squares and make a conforter out of it,,, or decorative throw pillows,,,,,as memories...

I got married in March and I brought the dress to the cleaners. They put it in a box for me, I think with this non-acidic paper that was mentioned before. No other plans for it right now :)

Mine has been in the same box for 11 years now. My grandmother made it, some old some new. We took bits and peices from others dresses(aunts and such) and made my dress. It is very pretty, , only cost $69.00 to make, and I plan on keeping it for other family to use in the future. I felt very honored on my wedding day to be including pieces of my family's highly successfull weddings(marriages).
Choose wisely :)

Chris,
What a wonderful idea! That dress would be a cherished family heirloom for future generations. :) Although I didn't have a formal wedding gown, I wore a beautiful ivory lace tea length dress. I know my daughter will never wear it (at least I hope she's never my size!) I still want to save it as a family heirloom as well. Maybe someday it could be used to make a dress like yours. :)

ha ha. i haven't posted in a while but this one interests me. i pretty much destroyed my dress on my wedding day with all the dancing and people stepping on it. so i let my sis-in-law wear mine for halloween when she was glinda the good witch and i was the wicked witch of the west. i then rolled it in a ball [stains and all] and stored in my attic. when we moved, i threw it out. i regret that now since my two daughters would have gotten a kick out of dressing up in it. oh well, guess i'll have to get another when i renew my vows at some point.
