The healthiest city dwellers in America live in San Jose, California and the least healthy in New Orleans, Louisiana, according to a new study released by Sperling's BestPlaces and Centrum, the maker of America's #1 multivitamin. The Centrum Healthiest Cities Study is the first-ever comprehensive "health report card" of U.S. cities to be based on key factors of health status, nutrition and exercise, mental health and life balance that can contribute to overall well-being.
According to the Sperling "report card," in the nationwide battle for healthiest cities, West easily trumps East. California boasts five cities in the top 10 — San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and the Orange County area — plus San Diego in the #12 spot. Seattle (#4), Salt Lake City (#5) and Denver (#9) also made strong showings in the West. But Ohioans may be dismayed to discover their top three metropolitan areas in the bottom 10 — Cincinnati (#48), Cleveland (#47) and Columbus (#45). In addition, New Yorkers live in the #8 least healthy city in America, while low-ranked Indianapolis (#44) and Detroit (#41) help contribute to the East's poor bill of health.
I live in the Seattle area #4 on the healthy list. The King County Parks department is fabulous. There are connecting walking, hiking, bicycling trails everywhere and the topography is quite hilly. People here are really into natural foods and fitness programs. Unfortunatly I never got on the band wagon. I'm fat and sedentary and my cholesterol level is waaaay up there. :o
roflmao.... must be happiest places for a crack heads to live under a bridge.
wonder who made that list. baton rouge is the worst place in this state lol
besides everyone knows head of island la is the best lol
and can you imagine st petersburg fl. being a bad place to live . lol
i love that place shshshs

I live in Lorain, OH. 30 miles west of Cleveland, which is #10 on the most depressing. They probably polled Brown's fans after this last season.
Gran,,,,I can't imagine how anyone can feel Jersey City,N.J. is a happy place
I almost choked,,,,,, it's horrible............... lol
Just because I live under a bridge in a cardboard box and smoke crack everyday doesn't mean I'm not healthy! There's lots of fresh air too.
LMAO! :p
Gee, I was born in one of the happy places, Wichita, KS., now I live in one of the depressing places, Atlanta, Ga.!!! Bummer. LOL@jgirl :p
Gran,,,,I can't imagine how anyone can feel Jersey City,N.J. is a happy place
I almost choked,,,,,, it's horrible............... lol Jersey City is a tale of two cities. Parts of it aren't very nice. Parts of it have million dollar homes. Here's some links:

My guess is that the people who liked Jersey City live in the more expensive part of town.
Mike
But that's ok. The people of the state take great care to be sure that no one knows just how great a place it is to live. So now that I live here in the middle of the most depressing places on earth, I try very hard to live in a Maryland State of Mind.
I miss my home state.
Paige
Huh ??? Portland, Oregon - depressed ???
Is it because of the rain? They do have about 9-10 months of rain out of the year. Maybe it's that.
I spent a week in Portland on my own in July of 1999 and it didn't seem depressed to me at all. Without a doubt, one of THEEE most beautiful and interesting cities I had ever seen. Would love to live there. I also spent a week in Eugene, Oregon later that month, which is about 100 miles south of Portland. If you've ever wondered where all the hippies of the sixties went.......Eugene, Oregon. That was a fun week. I even went to an anarchist's rally at Monroe Park while I was in Eugene. It was like an old fashioned sit-in from the sixties with cops standing watch. Kids wrapped in blanket-sized flags, beads, flowers, ski-masks. I almost expected Abby Hoffman or Bobby Seal to walk by at any moment. Cool !!! Isn't civil disobedience wonderful ?
I was surprised to find that Oregon is a big wine producing state. Over 150 wineries I think. I sampled wine at two of them. burp !!!
Paige,
I hope you don't think that I made that list! :) I haven't been to all of them,,,yet! I was most miserable in Ohio and LA. :(
It is a study released by Sperling's BestPlaces and Centrum-vitamins.
Mike,,,,the only reason there that price is close to NYC....... there are many apartments for that price,,,would you spend a mil on any of them ?????That must be a joke................
I know you didn't make up that list. I've seen similar ones in the past. I think the only list I've ever seen Maryland make is the one that lists that places with most deaths from cancer. MD's numbers are very high because Johns Hopkins is there doing tons of cancer research and lots of people come there looking for miracles and someday they will find the cure. Meanwhile, we don't mind not being on the "lists". It's a small place and if everyone knew what a great place it was they would all want to move there and there just wouldn't be room for everyone.
Paige
Mike,,,,the only reason there that price is close to NYC....... there are many apartments for that price,,,would you spend a mil on any of them ?????That must be a joke................ I agree, those apartments are so over priced that it's almost laughable. The one good thing is that those neighborhoods are actually very nice. The one sad thing is that the neighborhoods have changed so much that Our Lady of Czestochowa has discontinued Polish masses. (Here's a link:http://www.paulushook.org/mission.htm) Even though I'm neither Polish nor Catholic that's almost as unthinkable as million dollar condos!
Mike
I don't think I could live in a city like in those condos!
I like to be close enough to drive in on occasion but for me----wide open spaces!!!!!!!
No planes, sirens, horns blowing or gun shots-----boring but nice!
The 20 Most Depressed Cities

The 11 years I spent in Arizona (Phoenix metro area, which would include 7, 8, and 9) were amongst the happiest/healthiest of my 40!!
I don't think I could live in a city like in those condos!
I like to be close enough to drive in on occasion but for me----wide open spaces!!!!!!!
No planes, sirens, horns blowing or gun shots-----boring but nice! I've lived in a city all my life. I can't imagine living any where else.
True story: When I was in college one of the local hospitals caught on fire and had to be evacuated. While that was going on, a local commuter train came into the station too fast, and crashed into the bumper, scattering it's passengers like dominos. This was at the height of the rush hour so the train was standing room only. Fortunately, no one was killed and there were no serious injuries. (Ditto for the hospital.) My parents live on one of the few through streets in the area. That means that every emergency vehicle had to go past their house that day. My mother never noticed. Her sister called from Michigan and said that she saw it on CNN. My mother's response: "I thought I heard sirens, but they didn't stop so I never bothered to see what was happening!" (I probably would have done the exact same thing.) We still tease her about that!
Mike
Mike, I'm glad you like living in the city.
Maybe because I'm a "country girl". You know---you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl!!!!! I grew up on a farm. :)
We live in LA and Denver, Tacoma, Wa.--the largest places. Colorado Springs, Dayton Oh, Montgomery Al. Around the college towns-Auburn Al, College Station TX.---I'm glad to be away from it all. If one of us was working, I might feel different.
I thought that list was strange and did not go with things I have heard others say. I just wanted to find out what others thought and apparently it's not very accurate!
Gran,,,,what Mike said is so true,,,when I was in Texas,,,omg,,,it felt so different,,,hearing cows mooing,,,but I loved it,,,,I guess I like both.....
Mike that church is closing???? The church my son and daughter-in-law was married in I heard is closing also,,,it's so beautiful inside....her grandmother ,and mother was married in ,,,I can't think of the name..
Well I can handle just about anywhere as long as it's safe....
There's a rooster that lives on my college campus in town. Nobody knows where he came from -- just showed up and adopted the place, and has been there for several years now. I still crack up every time I see him!
