I am way to wise! It's unfortunate but true!
Question:

Thats correct, just back from the dentist today. He told me that I am much to wise and that it is time to extract 4 unnecessary teeth, aka the wisdom teeth.
He actually told me this a few years back but I didn't do anything. These teeth give me no trouble but apparently this is common practice now. So being the wise man I am I figured I might as well get a little dumber.
So before I go on a rant, please place your vote. Surgeon or Dentist.
OK, so this little bit of thing young lady, probably 5'1", 110lbs, and of course blonde is cleaning my teeth this morning. Shes a sweetheart and since she knows where I work tells me about her speeding problems and that she is looking to buy a crotch rocket. The girl is actually pretty fun and did a good job on my teeth. So we're done and she's telling me to have Dr. Webb do it. She goes they're fully erupted and look pretty easy from the xrays. She says he'll give you some shots and he's real strong, she further explains that sometimes he can have all 4 out in about 5 minutes. She goes he's not like some of the lady dentists. She tells me that some of the lady dentists aren't as strong and they end up working in your mouth forever and then sending you to the surgeon to fix it.
So I'm think, great.....I got a strong dentist whos gonna rip my jaw apart or I can go to a gentle one that takes forever........I think I'll just go to the surgeon and get my versaid or whatever and take the easy way out.
If anyone has any advice let me know. If the extraction improves my psoriasis I will be the first to let you know.
Please vote.
And if you're dumb as you and your wisdom teeth have parted ways, lets here the storys, good or bad.....

Brad, you know my dental problems -- Oral surgeon all the way. They put an IV in get ya a shot of versaid and you're in lah lah land until you wake up. The only down side to that is, you have to have someone drive you because you'll be really loopy after. :D

Had mine out when I was 17; oral surgeon by the name of "Dr. Carver." In those days, it was standard to have this done at the hospital with general anesthesia, and he wanted to do them 2 at a time. I refused and had all 4 out at once, in his office. Other than spewing a bunch of dirty words and embarrassing myself something awful, I did fine.
My son had HIS out at 16. Oral surgeon, also. He said afterwards that it was not near as bad as he'd anticipated. No problems with him, either.
One word of advice -- DO NOT suck through a straw afterwards; you don't want dry socket!

Answers:

Oral surgeon-sedation-someone to drive you home-lots of pain pills, just in case you need them. Good luck!

Answers:

Definitely want Vicodin afterward. Vicodin good, pain bad. :D

Hi Misales,
As I have said in previous posts, I have been in the dental field for 30 years.
I have also had my 3rd molars, aka wisdom teeth, removed. I had mine done one at a time ( I only had two) under local with nitrous oxide;but I'm strange and wanted to watch. My Daughter had hers out (four) under i.v. sedation. They also start you on the nitrous before the i.v. and you get the local anesthetic too. It is sort of a conscious sedation, you are awake but really out of it and have no memory post op. I watched her surgery, I have also assisted for many done by general dentists- My personal opinion is have it done by the surgeon- that's what they do (man or woman) they are quick and the less trauma to the area the faster you recover. If you have four go with the general unless you have a reason not to be sedated.Follow the post op instructions, we don't make them up for fun. If I can answer any questions for you please feel free to PM me.

Oral surgeon, not the dentist. My husband had the air force dentist do his four and was in there for hours and had a really hard recovery. Our daughter had hers out by a surgeon who has pulled a couple of my teeth, and it was so quick we could hardly believe it.
Don't smoke while healing. And as someone else mentioned, no sucking thru a straw.
My daughter had bad headaches before she got hers out. No headaches since.
Good Luck!!

If they are fully erupted, not impacted, and you have room in your mouth for them and they aren't causing you any trouble, Why do anything? Sounds like they just see an opportunity to make more money from you. I'm from the school that teaches "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

When I was in high school and all my peers where having their wisdom teeth removed, they would come back in bad shape. The swelling and bruising on most of them looked like they really pissed off Mike Tyson and didn't have a chance to run.
When I had mine done there was no bruising or swelling and almost no discomfort at all. As a matter of fact I was playing basketball 2 hours after the surgery. I had all four of mine taken out at the same time.
The only difference between me and my friends was that my mother insisted on an oral sergeon and my buddies had their regular dentist do it.
I totally attribute my quick recovery to having it done by the right person.

One more thing...No smoking after the surgery!!! Very bad idea.

Answers:

Agreed, Brad. Oral surgeon, NO smoking! I never did get dry sockets when I had mine pulled at 16, but a few of my friends did and man were they in bad shape! I had four, fully-impacted pulled the same day, and was on Vicodin for at least 4 days afterwards. Not sure why so long, but I'm pretty sure it was necessary. Can't imagine having played basketball right after! I do recall playing A LOT of video games that week because it was summer and I couldn't go out. I had someone staying with me the entire time during and afterward too, because I was so far out there. My cousin Joe will never let me live it down that I called him during one of those days crying because the movies in the refridgerator were not in alphabetical order... ??? haha
Those prescription drugs, they do crazy things! ;)

I agree with Lottie on this! If they aren't giving you any trouble dont mess with em
They told me to get mine out when i was like 18 even tho they weren't bothering me
I chose not to, only reason i ended up getting mine out is cuz there wasn't enough room in my mouth for them and that HURT
If you choose to get them out tho definitely go with the oral surgeon

I have yet to get mine removed. We'll wait and see!

Just had mine out 8 weeks ago!!! I highly recommend an oral surgeon with IV sedation. In my early 20's I had one removed by a dentist with novacaine. I didn't feel it but there was a lot of tugging and an awful crunching sound as he pulled it out. I had the remaining 3 removed 8 weeks ago. My old dentist used to say...if they don't bother you then leave them alone. Then for years a new dentist said to have them removed and I didn't listen. So now, at 40, I all of a sudden had pain in the middle of the night that then went away. So they said it was my wisdom teeth and I figured better to remove them at 40 than at 50 or 60 or 70. (The oral surgeon said she has had patients in their 70s.) Had them out on a Friday and I was fine over the weekend with a couple of endocet pills. But when I went back to work on Monday with no pain killers, boy was I very uncomfortable. Should have taken Monday off. But by Friday I was feeling myself again. The whole process made me wish I had them out when I was in my teens since teens seem to recover in a day but I'm glad I did it. Good Luck!!

Since everyone's telling their stories.......I guess I will too. I got my wisdom teeth extracted when I was 14. They were coming in sideways so it was for the best. I went to a extremely gorgeous oral surgeon to get them out. After the surgery I ate a lot of Jell-O, watched as many James Bond movies as my parents would allow, and looked like I got jumped by five ninjas. My face was swollen and badly bruised because they had to cut into my gums.

Check your x-rays, if you're a tad less evolved and have curved roots, ask the Doc to take a hammer and chisel to them first. They're like diamond cutters, right spot, one whack, four readily extractable pieces. Less torn flesh.
No matter what, DO NOT blow your nose for several hours after surgery.

I guess by now that we have Brad scared to death. We may never hear from him again! :D :p :p ;)

Answers:

I was terrified of the entire process but the oral surgeon knocked me out and was done in less than 10 minutes! I don't remember anything and I happy to not know what happened. Got home and applied bags of frozen peas, one to each side, for awhile and had no swelling. Make sure you do the rinses as the doc tells you to and you will be fine.
The people around here seem to know you pretty well! Put down the pack and leave the smokes alone until you are healed. Heck don't even pick them back up!
We love you Brad so pick the oral surgeon and be done with it.
