Question:
Just as things were starting to get better for me something always has to go wrong..... Last night my mom as sweet as she is made a low carb pumpkin Cheesecake... since we are on atkins anything sweet that we CAN have is yummy.... I did enjoy it...UNTIL.. I started to get really hot and my body started to shake.. I took my shirt off to see if I could cool down and saw HIVES all over my body and red blotches that were so dark they almost looked purple... I immediatly RAN upstairs to wake my mother and show her what was going on.. we both said that I needed to use my epi pen but I just couldnt do it... the directions said swing and JAB in thigh,. just the thought of that made me almost pass out... My mom said the same thing when I asked her if she wanted to do it... At this point my throat started to feel like it had a golf ball in it and I KNEW it was time to go to the hospital. I tried to stay home as long as I could but my father said LETS GO!!! When I walked into the hospital they must have seen how my face was so red with a tint of purple and when they asked why I was there and I told them an allergic reaction they were WONDERFUL.... 5 nurses came running out along with a doctor and they hooked me up to all kinds of wires... when they checked my Oxygen it was down to 86 so they thought it was a good idea to get me on some oxygen... my pulse was up to 148 and it felt like each second that passed my throat was getting tighter and tighter.... they gave me 2 big shots of epenephrine.. (sorry for the spelling) and a VERY HIGH dose of Prednisone along with Benydrl and Heprin.... I told the doctor that I didnt want a big dose of Prednisone of Epi and then he asked me if I wanted to die... he said that this was my 3rd allergic reaction and that my throat was 75% closed and if it got anymore they would have to put a tube down my throat to breath for me.... before it closed all the way and they couldnt get anything down there... Thank god that the medicine seemed to help. He said this time was very dangerous for me because each time you have a reaction it is much worse then the last time and THAT is so true... I have never been so scared in my life especially when I saw myself turning purple... I am doing better tonight although I am very weak... I am going to be on a HIGH dose of Prednisone for the next 9 days and then tappering off but I may be on it for a little longer.... I didnt see an allergist because I didnt have the 300 dollars to pay for it but tonight we sat down as a family and said this is SOMETHING I NEED to get done so I will be going and paying as much as they want to get an allergy test.... I am just so grateful to be alive..... I never knew that allergic reactions like this could be so life threatening......Just wanted to share this with all of you... hope that you dont mind
Karen pm'ed me and said that you had gone to the E/R. I'm glad that you made the decision to go.

Hey Katie,
I am so glad you are feeling better. I am also glad you have realized that you need to go to an allergist and find out what is triggering these outbreaks. Thake care of yourself and feel better.

Hi Katie,
Allergic reactions are really scary- The epi pen is really easy- and someone in your family should learn to give it in case you can't. It is the same device I use for migraine injections- so when I had to give one to a friend for bee sting (they were unable to hold the pen) I just did it- I'm glad you are doing ok- You should get a list together of the ingredients in the Cheesecake and any that are new to you STAY AWAY from. What sweetener was in it? I know I have a bad (but not life threatening) reaction to aspertame (neutrasweet) so I am cautious about things that might contain it.
Again I am so glad you got to the ER and are doing better.
I'm sorry to here what happened to you. I would have been so scared too. I'm glad to here that you are doing better.
Take care,
Polly
katie,
glad to see you're okay and i hope you've been resting up!
good luck at the allergist
Katie,
I'm so happy you are ok. I know how scary it is because I experienced the same thing about 10 years ago. My problem was penicillin [sp?]. The treatment was the same at my hospital as yours so I guess that it is pretty standard. I'm happy your family is there for you 100% and will get you to an allergist. Some things are worth too much, LIKE YOU, and no amount of money is too much to pay for your health. You'll be happier when you know what caused the reaction and know what to stay far, far, far away from!
