Question:
I've often seen threads here and on newsgroups about the quality of UK newstand DVD magazines. Now that What DVD has gone the way of the dodo, it got me wondering what future there is for DVD mags. Would you/do you buy DVD magazines? And if so, what would make you buy it? Some of the freebie TV show discs on recent magazines have been quite tempting, so I guess that's a start!
How about:
- consistantly getting their facts right
- more coverage on other region discs
- hardware and home cinema reviews
Thing is, I've been more than happy looking for this sort of info online, so I'm not sure that even those things would tempt me.

I read DVD Review magazine for over 2 years and they are great to read even R1 is a little light.
But it is the best one I could find.
i read them all, picking up ones that have reviews/articles i'm interested in. Total Was good but seems to have gone down hill a bit, but would agree with the above, Review is probably the best
DVD Monthly
I did read dvd mags in my pre-forum days. But I started to find that most of the stories and articles in them, had already been discussed here a month or more before.
They will probably all go the same way as Computer mags went and start giving away free films on the cover, you know 1930's films that no one really wants not the good ones.
has What DVD finished?????
thats was the best of the lot, DVD Mothly and Ultimate DVD are proper *****:( :(
I read DVD Review but mostly get DVD news etc of the net so no real point in getting any other magazines.
i always get DVD Review ,passes the time, reading when i have my tea break at work
dvd review for me
whilst it is not brilliant it is okay-ish for the big R2 reviews.
recently took out out a sub to via emagazine for £22 which made it a steal considering the street price is £52.
one thing that bugs is the free dvds are usually the cthe ones, which you already get if you subscribe to cthe. not really EXCLUSIVE then
cheers

It seems to have dissapeared off the face of the earth:confused:
DVD review for me on the rare occasion that I but a DVD magazine, depending on whats on the cover.
As to what could make me buy one on a regular basis, It would be good to have a cover mounted DVD of the latest trailers. That would save me a lot of time downloading as I'm only on 56k.
I don't really see much point buying DVD magazines. You can spend £4 or so on one, and get one opinion on each film, or you can go go on the internet and find endless reviews of each film, loads of discussion boards with different peoples opinions, and ask about specific aspects and get feedback very quickly - there's no comparison really.
What DVD has definitely gone, yes. I agree with a lot of what's been said above. A regular trailers disc would certainly be quite nice.
Do any of you ever buy Home Cinema magazines? Is the rationale for buying those different to DVD magazines? I've certainly bought more Home Ents mags than I have DVD mags (but to be fair, I know less about Home Cinema kit than I do DVDs)
Jim
The DVD section of EMPIRE magazine is pretty good, but isn't exactly in-depth.
To be honest, I mostly use on-line resources for DVD news and info, my fave being these forums and www.dvdtimes.co.uk!
Cheers,
Ryan

Yeah, the problem with mags is that the news has already been on the net weeks before the mags come out.
I used to buy DVD Review as well, and although it is still a good magazine it is to far out of date buy the time it comes out, so tend to use the net for info now!
I never bother with them anymore, DVD Review used to be the best but now I get everything form the net, you have more reviews to choose from and the news is much more up to date.
I regularly buy 'Total' and 'Review'...I really don't know why, there's hardly anything in them that I haven't already read on the net...I suppose you get into a habit. The worrying thing is that I haven't even noticed how much the damn things are, they seem to be creeping up to the £4 mark these days. Have you also noticed the increase in 'Home Cinema' mags? There used to be 'Home Cinema Choice', Home Entertainment' and 'What Video'...there's now a whole glut of them...all saying the same bloody things! ...a lot of them seem to be spin offs of the other ones...look out for 'What Remote Control' coming soon! ;)
...I buy each month, Home Cinema Choice, Home Entertainment, What Video, Total DVD, DVD Review and Empire...that's well over £20
DVD Monthly and DVD Review. :)
Craig
as has been said previously, before i got my player and was exploring the medium i bought total pretty regular but once i bought a player, online sources took over from the printed media
I would sometimes buy DVD monthly but usually only if the cover disc is of interest.
been getting DVD REVIEW since Issue 1.

Perhaps someone could just knock up a monthly trailers disc and stick that on the newsstand with a backing card!
Jim
Used to buy DVD Review reasonably often, but don't bother now as all the info is on the net weeks earlier.
They have also developed an annoying habit of spoiling films that you hadn't seen. The little 'Stand out moment' box is a space filler at best, and normally ruins a pivotal moment in the movie.
Plus the R1 section is far too lightweight, oh and the technical info is sometimes inaccurate, and at £4 its only a purchase at the aiport before a two week holiday which would be otherwise completely dvd-less :D
Charlie
For me Empire and DVD review are the mags I buy to cover DVD's and while I can find loads of stuff on the net, the people who write these are usally professional writers and thus the quality is pretty good and normally the feaatures in both are great and I allways enjoying reading a magazine rather than reading a screen, guess it's just the type of person that I am. However for onlione reviews I find that dvd.ign.com is the best for R1 releases (they don't cover R2 but a lot of the stuff I like comes out on R1 anyhow) and the best Dvd site for genral news full stop. DVD times is good but not really updated enough but the reviews are top notch, just not enough of them.

Do you not think that traditional paper media is now some what out of date. For a topic such as DVD, most information is available much earlier from many of the online sources - hence magazines are out of date by the time you get them.
I would imagine most people in the forums are very computer literate and buy many films online and have already made prerelease purchases before announced in many of the traditional magazines.
Just my two pence worth, I am sure many of you will disagree.....
cheers

DVD Review, Empire and HotDog for me! Mainly attracted by the cheaper subscription rates, but I must admit to just flicking through them most months.
stevehw - this is the odd thing. A lot of the replies in this thread suggest that most of us use the Internet to get our info. So why do so many of us still buy the mags? I don't get it!
DVD Review is by far the best. Been collecting it from the first issue.
Same for me , about the best one at the mo DVD Review.
I've got subs to: Total DVD, DVD Review, Empire, and the daddy of all home cinema mags, Home Cinema Choice, with the odd issue of What Video & TV now and then. Why, when I've got the net? Out of habit, I suppose. I enjoy reading on my own time, at my own pace. When I'm on the net, I'm restricted as to the amount of time I can spend on it, so I tend to skim read a lot of stuff. And as for the 'it's all on the net anyway' argument, the same could be applied to books, or any printed literature. But many still choose to read paper and ink as well as pixels on a screen - and I'm one of 'em.
Use to buy loads of mags, DVD, computer, music..etc. Now I hardly
buy any. I think they have had their day. The internet is a far better (& informed) source of info.
How about:
- consistantly getting their facts right
- more coverage on other region discs
- hardware and home cinema reviews
Thing is, I've been more than happy looking for this sort of info online, so I'm not sure that even those things would tempt me.
