AFI's Top 100 Comedy Films
Question:

What did you think of this programme that featured on Channel 4 on Saturday night. I know it's been on before, but what did you think of the list, and how many of the films have you seen?
I was actually quite pleased with their choices and the order they put them in, but after watching Private Benjamin last night, there's no way that should have been in the top 100. Stripes is virtually the same movie, but a lot, lot better. And There's Something About Mary at 27 was way to high, and that is one I wouldn't have put on the list anyway.

Can this only include American films:confused: If not then where's Monty Pythons Holy Grail and Life Of Brian:oh-hum:
No Dumb And Dumber either. The prudes;) Would also have included 'The Mask' just for the dance sequence when Carrey runs into the police after escaping from the park  :notworthy
Plus i wouldn't exactly class 'The Graduate' a comedy. Mind you haven't seen it for a while.

Answers:

Yes, only American films were allowed to be considered - what can you say, the yanks are full of themselves!

Where's Schindler's List?!!
But, in all seriousness... Trouble in Paradise? Ferris Bueller's Day Off? The Bank Dick? Pee Wee's Big Adventure? Rushmore? The Shop Around the Corner? Dark Star? My Favourite Year? Wayne's World? Down by Law? Showgirls?
I ask you... :oh-hum:

Answers:

Of course Holiday on the Buses would have been number 1 if they'd have included British films.

King Of Comedy should of made it in to the Top 100.

What about The Sting, Gremlins, All Of Me, Rocky Horror Picture Show, a Cheech and Chong or Kevin Smith movie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a Coen brothers movie, The Princess Bride etc etc etc.
And there are some VERY dubious inclusions in that list I won't even pretend to call comedy.
Shoddy, very shoddy.

In terms of the Coen's, it does seem strange that Fargo should beat The Big Lebowski. While I love Fargo, and think it is very funny, I remember laughing out loud a lot more during TBL.
But they have a soft spot for Fargo as it does well on their top 100 films of all time. That again is American films only though.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles!

Pretty shoddy only having one Laurel & Hardy film included and at such a low position. No Way Out West?!

I didn't watch the show but i'll place a large wager they were refering to the original Spencer Tracey version.
