Get Das Boot R2, as it has one of the best DD5.1 mixes you will ever hear. There will be a dts version coming out on R1 superbit as well, which will probably be destroying speakers across the land when it comes out. The Jurassic Park movies all have awesome DD5.1 soundtracks as well, so look out for those. And regardless of what you think of the movies themselves, the two Star Wars dvds have incredible DD5.1 EX tracks.

I like The Thomas Crown Affair (Brosnan) esp. the yachting scene for impressing the 5.1 newbies who visit.

Answers:

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Dire film but the Pod Race is a Tour de Force in Dolby Digital.
Saving Private Ryan. The dts soundtrack rocks but the Dolby Digital does the biz.
Too many to list. Do a search as this is a regualr question that gets asked and answered.

I would agree on the POd Race in Star Wars, but still the best tester for me is Terminator 2 Ultimate...the sound is excellent.
Infact its about time a DVD came along to blow it out of the water.
Lord of the Rings is good, but a lot are...you`re like me, you want amazing !!

Contact and
Any Given Sunday Region1, fantastic bass!

The Iron Giant
Ninja Scroll (watched it last night - great film, fantastic 5.1 mix. Shame about the awful English dub...)
Ghostbusters
Titan A.E (The ice bit is outstanding)

I second the Thomas Crown remake for having a fabbo DD sountrack. It's not particularly surround busy (if that's what you are after then the opening to Ice Age will float your boat) but it IS extremely well balanced and musical.:smokin:

Independace Day has a pretty good DD track.
Others worthy of a mention include LOTR and Moulin Rouge for very good overall use of all the channels. Some of the better ones I've heard however have been DD-EX and you need the extra channel to get the full effect but the normal DD track is also good (e.g. Star Wars Ep I)
Saving Private Ryan is just good with both DD and DTS. I'm personally really annoyed though as my DTS version "went missing" when I moved here to the US and I still haven't got around to replacing it (awaiting insurance clearance).

Contact is awesome :smokin:

Marv mentioned the Matrix ;)
I still haven't got around to watching my copy of Contact in 5.1 yet. Have seen the film loads but not watched the DVD since buying it!
Maybe that will get watched today or tomorrow.

The Princess and The Warrior (excellent German film) - one classic scene will really test whether your surround speakers are imaging properly.
